Breaking 80? Blues or Whites

Breaking 80 from any tees on any course is a huge accomplishment. Now breaking 80 for a PGA Pro is not a big deal. But doing that as an Amt. golfer is a big deal no matter what tees you play. Less then 10% of all golfers ever do that at any time from any tees at any course.

Some people have to get off their high horse and quit qualifying every score posted that might diminish their own. OH< but how many sand traps were on your course? How much water is on your course? Was it windy? Was it 29* outside? Was it at 8,000ft above sea level? "Mine was from 8100yards, 152ft BELOW sea level, at hurricane force winds, on a course with 350 yard forced carries on every tee shot, AND my arm was in a sling from a compound fracture the day before. SO MINE WAS BETTER THEN YOURS!!"

I've shot 69 twice......."BUT OHHHHHHH...it was a par 71, so your 69 is not as good as my 69.....na na na na boo boo!!!!". Really? Sixties is sixties as 79 is seventies, no matter where or from how long. Get over it!

Our temporary tees are in for the winter. A couple of weeks ago I shot a 67 and a 69. First time I shot a sub-70 round. However, I don't know what the slope or rating was as for the majority of the holes the tee boxes were way up, even though the fairways were rain soaked.

A lot of folks on this forum would say it didn't count. All I know is I played 18 holes. When I added up my strokes I shot a 67 on one day and a 69 on another. I followed the rules of golf and I teed off from tee boxes. What else could I do? :-)

It was cold, it was wet, and yes it was short, but if felt nice nonetheless.

Agreed---

I also find it a bit odd that most amateurs I speak with believe that as a course gets shorter, it gets easier...
...I would say a very reasonable argument could be made for the opposite being true.
Or think of it this way----considering the amount of par 3s and par 5s played in a given career---do you think bogeys occur, on average, more often on 3s....or 5s...?

If I'm in the mood for a different kind of challenge on my home course, I step up a few tee boxes and play with a group of accomplished seniors-----it can be a very humbling experience...

I play 2 different courses and have broken 80 at both. One course was from the whites, one was from the blues.

Is one more valuable?

Course one:
Distance: 6422
Slope: 72.0
Rating: 130

Course two:
Distance: 6452
Slope: 72.0
Rating: 133

You're slopes and ratings are backwards but I'd say great rounds on both!

Crap you're right. I went back and looked and one of the courses had it backwards and I followed suit.

I'll fix it...

Of course it matters and anyone who says its doesn't is deluded.

On my course the SS is two strokes difference from the yellows to the whites and I had the joint course record from the whites (back tees) , then some guy came in and said 'broke the record' from where I asked ??? Yellows he said. His score was declared invalid for the course record due to the length being 500 yards less.

Comp tees matter only.
[/quote]

For a course record it definitely matters. There should be a course record for each set of tees - and probably one per age group too. From an individual's perspective, it shouldn't matter much at all - IMO.

Relatively? I guess yes - one is a better adjusted score. But both are awesome rounds of golf.

The first time I broke 70, I was 16, I shot 69 in our golf team tryouts from box up (~6500). I still consider this one of my better rounds solely because it was in tournament conditions and don't take much away from it because it was box up

IMO opinion if you are the type of golfer who is looking to break 80 for the first time you should be playing the white tees (or whatever tees are one in from the tips). Breaking 80 is a great accomplishment and playing from the tees that are best for you doesn't mean there is some asterisk by it. Tees are about skill level not length. IMO at most courses the tips are only for guys that keep their handicap under 6 or 7. You want to have FUN and shooting a good score is fun. Play the tees of your ability and the tees that you will have the most fun from.

I understand where you are coming from but distance has a lot to do with choosing tees. If you are playing tees to far back things like fwy bunkers aren't coming into play. Likewise even if you're a 15 hdcp if you drive it 300+ and play it from shorter tees you are taking all of the danger out of play. It changes the way you play the course. That's just my opinion. I think it's a combination of skill and distance but if were talking about 80ish shooters distance should be the most important thing in choosing tees.

I played many rounds on the same course from both the blue tees (with golfers of the same ability as myself) and from the whites (with my 70 year old father in law) and have actually shot worse at times from the whites. My theory is that I tend to get in trouble from the whites because I find myself hitting to distances that I'm not completely comfortable with or hitting too long on the short par 4's and getting into undesired areas of the course i.e. OB.

My lowest round (75) was from the white tees on a course rated at 69.7/126 and 6047 yards. Blues are 6629 and Blacks are 7174.

My best round (76) from the "blues" was on a course rated at 69.9/121 and 6079 yards.

So with that in mind, enjoy breaking 80 from either set of tees. It's quite an accomplishment that 95% of golfers will never do in their entire life.

+1

Because I still enjoy some distance, playing shorter tees brings more trouble into play. Reason I don't often use driver, opting for 3wd or 2 iron to come up short of trouble from shorter tees.

Interesting. In my experience it's closer to a 700 yd difference between the back tees to the next set. Not exactly 10 yds a hole...
