How many play regularly in men's club events?

Recommended Posts

So my new years resolution was to join a men's club in 2015 and today we played our 1st tournament of the year. It was a lot of fun, 2 man best ball and even though my partner and I did not play well individually collectively we never had trouble on the same hole and ham n' egged our way to victory.

The only thing I could have hoped for more in my experience is more members near my age range. Seems most are of the older variety. Not a bid deal, just when I talk about my daughter, they talk about their grand kids. Still a great group we have.

So how many tee it up with a group monthly at your home course? Things you like or dislike about club events?

At my club we have a noon game on Saturday and Sunday. It's a flighted, 4 man team 2 or sometimes 3 best balls count for score. There are normally at least 4 teams involved, a few times we've had 9 or 10....We also have men's league, on Wednesday night. It's handicapped stroke play, 2 man teams. I really enjoy playing in both. It's a good way to get to know your fellow club members.

My course has a mens skins game saturday morning usually about 20-24 guys $20 bucks a head. I play in it from time to time, sometimes I work the shop saturday morning and others its just way to early for me. A lot of fun when I play though.

Our member events are a lot of fun. OP, we are all the same age on a golf course...just a bunch of kids having fun. :)

Absolutely 100% true. My partner today was 25 years my senior and we had a blast. Just surprised there are so few late 30's early 40's in the group.

I do. It's fun. We have a weekly game that attracts people of all ages and handicap ranges, and since we play a modified stableford with different targets depending on your average scores, everyone has a chance to win. We also have several traditional tournaments and several "fun" tournaments, like a 7-club challenge, a shambles, a few best ball and some other things.

I'd say that the average age of the participants skews to the north side of 50, but there are quite a few guys in the late 20s up to about 40yrs old as well. I'm in my mid 30s and I'm one of the younger guys but not the youngest and I don't feel out of place. And as a mid-capper, I still have fun even though I'm not threatening to break 70 like a few of the sticks that play in this group.

Finding a good golf club/group is very important to improving one's game.

You speak the truth Barry,

Playing in our noon games and men's league, helped me to relax, no matter who I'm playing with. It adds a little more urgency to playing better, cause a bad shot impacts not only you, but your team mates as well. I still sometimes get some first tee jitters in a stroke play tourney, but have learned to control it, and keep that first drive on the golf course.

I played in 7 of my clubs tournaments last year. Some match play, some scrambles, some stroke play and a couple shambles. I won 5 of them, finished 2nd in one and 3rd in the other all in A-flight. I love tournament golf and it really tends to bring out the best in my game. They hold weekly Friday night 9 hole scramble tournaments as well with teams drawn out of a hat so you never know who will be on your team so it keeps it interesting. The complimentary meals provided after the larger tournaments are worth the entry alone half the time! London broil, BBQ chicken, fresh corn, etc... Gotta love a small town course with a close knit group that's there regularly.

I play in 2 Mens Clubs.....one is very healthy and the other is not. At bit click'ish, but a great group of guys. non event days we run a 3 Net game and have about 5 groups......events will have about 110 players

You me mentioned that most of the players were older then you.......Majority of our members are 50 plus.

Simple reason is Kids and spending time with them on the weekends.

I play in a weekly men's league, it's every Thursday 1:00 shotgun. It's a ton of fun, there's usually 50 2 or 3 man teams and its a match play best ball format. It kind of gets worked into a points system 1/2 point to each team if the hole is halved and a point to the team that wins the hole and an additional 2 points for the team that wins the match. It gets split up in 4 divisions based on team handicap, each division winner then moves on to playoffs. Division 1 plays division 4 and then obviously division 2 plays division 3. It's a really unique and fun format in my opinion. The club also provides a buffet after every round.

I play in a mens club every weekend from May to Oct. Once a month we do a 4 person best ball, and we take either the best 2-3-4 scores.

Also in my area we have what we call a 16 man match play were play other clubs in a no handicap 4 ball match, that happens once a month.

I am also one of the youngest players in my club and we struggle to get younger players.

But its alot of fun

Every Wednesday, 9:00 am start, our pro squads teams for an ABCD scramble. $5.00/man. Winning team gets free lunch, everyone gets a free drink. We usually draw 22-28 golfers, mostly the retired crew and the occasional guy playing hookey or on vacation. Winners also get their names in the local paper in the golf column. Can't wait for spring to get back at it!!.....................the Mailman

I had to give this some thought. Four different men's clubs over one hundred and seventy events (excluding league nite) and the last one was the best. We have a member who turned 90 last month and the object was to shot his age. No prizes other then to sing happy birthday and eat cake.

Awesome, sounds like a ton of fun formats. I like the 4 ball match play idea. We only play once a month officially but can get into a skins game if I can play hookie on Fridays. :)

This will be my 3rd year in my Men's League. We have tournaments every other weekend beginning April 4 and going to the end of October. I love it. The club has a pretty good variety of players, with scratch flight to D flight typically, and while there are plenty of older men in the club, the 30 somethings are starting to stack up too. They love the younger guys joining bc that is how the club keeps on going, and they love passing down the funny stories from years past. I actually look forward to being in this club for 20 years and looking back and telling stories with the new young guys that join. Our course is not the best. It's a really nice muni that is kept in pretty good shape, greens are really nice, and there are lots of old trees lining most fws, but the people are great. I am really looking forward to this season and finally winning one hopefully! Best I took was 2nd place in A flight last season.

When I lived in California, Shoreline GC in Mountain View had a great men' club (shoutout to Shoreline!) and I loved the challenging track, too. There were all age ranges and the flights generally took care of the ages so my flight (2nd flight, most of the time) was people around my age. We always had a great time and I cannot say enough about how great everybody there was. Meals and beers after, seldom every a cranky person on the course and just a fantastic set of memories.

Now, I live in the south of France and I am a member of one of the oldest clubs here so obviously, it has an average age slightly in the upper end. However, they do a lot for younger players now and the more tournaments I play, the more I meet people around my age. Of course, "my age" gets older all the time, but I am still referring to people that have a decade or more of standard working life ahead of them. We have stable ford tourneys (seemingly the standard over here) and some 2 man best ball and the odd scramble. It is fun. I enjoy it very much.
