Also like to get to Legacy a couple times per year. I wish there was an easier way to get onto some of the private courses around here. Seems like you have to know someone or make the big bucks haha. Echo valley, Hyperion, dmgcc, wakonda, glen oaks, Ankeny GCC, etc. The ONE that would absolutely be sweet to play right here in Ankeny is Talons of Tuscany.

 

Talons is Albaugh's course, my brother has played it several times, shot 66 there. Unless you know someone, pretty tough. We were members with them at Ankeny Golf back in the day, my parents were good friends with them, and I went to school with their kids, could probably find a way on, with his son-in law (used to gamble together).

Yeah they definitely have some $$$ haha. Funny story. Have a kid at school who says to me "you play golf right?" I said yes. He says "ever heard of talons something or other in Ankeny?" I'm stewing, because I know this kid doesn't golf. He goes " yeah my uncle took me there to golf for the first time, it was ok." Hahaha! Unbelievable. Uncle knew Denny somehow I guess.

Terrace just posted they might be open next week. Might get out and play Saturday! 54 degrees. Beaver Creek in Grimes will be open for sure I bet.

Ah, Saturday is supposed to be the best day, but it is my kid's b-day, but Toad is open tomorrow, just booked a tee time for 12:15 with a buddy. Only supposed to be mid-to high 40's, but I need to strike some balls on the course.

Hey Iowa WRXers! I travel Iowa around 2-3 weeks out of the month and try to play whenever I get time in the afternoons. I'm in Ft. Dodge the next couple of days and wanna hear any recommendations for a decent course to play. Thanks for the help!

 

Call FDCC, and see if they will let you on. They have some of the best greens in the state.

Yep, FDCC is my home course and the greens are fantastic. The only course I've played with greens I like better is Glen Oaks.

Awesome, WDSM, and Ankeny in the last 2 posts. I grew up in Anleny, and lived in WDSM for about 10 years. I am down south a bit now, about 15 miles south of Carlisle.

 

Where do you guys play normally?

 

A group of us had played league at Coldwater in Ames for the past few years but recently switched to Woodland Hills since it's much closer, but may consider driving again because Coldwater is that nice and Woodland Hills is well, Woodland Hills haha. Live very close to Ankeny GCC but haven't played it, looks nice. They have some public tournaments I'm gonna look into this year. Other than that otter creek, beaver creek in grimes (south course is awesome), jester park, TCI once or twice. Now I'm stuck playing indoors at Backspin in Ankeny, but at least I'm swinging clubs! Pretty nice place too.

Ankeny is okay. It's nothing to write home about. It's a short 9 hole club and IMO is not worth the dues.

 

Purchase a $30 IGA membership. They have 3 open play days at private clubs every year - last year they had Glen Oaks and Echo Valley. They did DMGCC a couple years back.

 

Backspin is kind of cool. I was there the other week for the first time and enjoyed myself. I've never used a super high end simulator like Tru Golf or about Golf, so after my first experience I was impressed with the accuracy.

I've got 2 aboutGolf simulators in Ft. Dodge that I just upgraded with the newest software and HD projectors. I'd be glad to have you come check them out. Anyone that's interested, just shoot me a PM and I'll give you my number.

I just got home from Backspin ( the course did not open today).

 

I love hitting the ball in winter, but the numbers are just out of whack. I average about 800-1000 rpm of spin higher on one sim compared to another.

 

We have another time booked Sunday, but after that, out to Schall to hit on GC2.

Yeah unfortunately the sims are not nearly as accurate as last time I played (last winter). I think they need to re-calibrate or get new sensors. Also, beaver creek in grimes was open today and they'll be open Saturday and Sunday as well FYI

Looks like 5 about golf simulator bays and a full bar.

It's called about golf. The same brand the golf channel uses.

And a FYI, as I've done this in the past. The GolfTec in Clive offers a winter indoor pass from October through March for around $325. I usually get an email blast every September/October about this offering. It's unlimited use for their GC2. Pretty reasonable, depending on amount of use and if you're wasting money at simulators anyway.

Yep, I've had them since 2012. Before I upgraded them over the past couple seasons, I did a lot of shopping around and they're still the best out there

Another place I saw by my kids daycare in Waukee - Club Herf. Its opening next month. Cigar shop, smoking lounge and golf simulators. They're starting to multiply like rabbits.

Just a FYI, Blank in DSM is open any day its over 40 degrees. Also Legacy has 2 indoor bays that you hit onto their driving range for $25 an hour, their heated and are available when its over 20 degrees.

Also new to the forum. A lot of talk about simulators here. I also live about 2mi from Backspin in Ankeny so I go there a bunch. Agree on their sims being out of whack. The far corner slot is about the only accurate one I've found that lines up with my historical GC2 data from Golf Galaxy/Dick's Sporting Goods. All the other bays I'm only getting about 240yd drives out of 110SS and 155MPH ball speeds. So I just decided to fix the problem and getting my own GC2.

Broheim's Bar looks awesome. Anyone go there yet? The aBoutGolf sims are definitely next level. Played one up in MN on their widescreen bay....phenomenal.

I hate Preserve. Some people like it but I just hate it. I don't think they get enough revenue to keep up the course so the conditions usually suck. And the layout isn't very inspiring.

 

The Harvester on the other hand - without question the best course in Iowa. The conditions are impeccable, every hole is interesting and memorable. Dare I say, one of my favorite courses I've ever played.

 

I agree 100% on the Harvester being best in Iowa. Glen Oaks is up there as well, but the elevation, scenery, and layout of the holes is impeccable. if you want a challenge, play The Hog from the tips. :) I'd say its easily Top 3 courses I've ever played. Osage National(Mountain/River) down in the Ozarks and Cog Hill #2 course are probably my other Top 3.
