Agree with your list... Whats your favorite courses on the east side? The best I have played (very limited) was Spirit Hollow in Burlington.

Favorite is easily Davenport Country Club. It's probably my second favorite in Iowa just behind Harvester. Second I'd say is Crow Valley Golf Club and then TPC Deere Run.

I think Davenport CC is an unreal track

16, 17, 18 are the best finishing holes I've played. The elevation and terrain is just fantastic.

I'm going to try and go back this year. The new sod should be in much better shape this year.

Yeah, the course will be in better shape this year. They have taken out a few more trees last fall and winter which really created some great views that you didn't see before

Is it possible to play Davenport Country Club without a member? I live in Indy but family is still in the QC, it would be fun to play DCC during one of my trips back.

Chances are good if it's during the week. If it's on a weekend, you may be limited to a later afternoon window.

Just give the pro shop a call and ask for the head pro. He'll likely accommodate your request and the guest fees are quite affordable.

I play the south and west 9 early last year. Granted, they were tearing up the course for the Solheim Cup but I didn't think it was worth the $100 and the super expensive buy in to be a member when I could spend a whole lot less and golf TCI, Amana, Beaver, Otter, etc..

It's not worth $100 and you like Otter and Beaver better? Boy tough crowd. BTW it costs more for a member to bring out a guest.

Are we just talking best DSM courses? Some good spots in Cedar Rapids and Davenport area I enjoy.

Just in the DSM area I'd probably say...

The Harvester, by a landslide

Glen Oaks

Wakonda

DMG South

DMG North

TCI

Yeah, I SOOOOO wanted to play DMCC and was excited to be out there finally only to be sorely disappointed. I enjoyed the lay out on a few select holes and just felt like it was underwhelming for what I was expecting. I'd make a long trip to TPC Deere Run, Harvester, any other course on my list any day over a $100 at DMCC.

I haven't hit any courses east but would love to find some gems out near Iowa City area. TPC Deere Run a few years ago was an eye opener. The rough was absolutely devastating to play out of. Beautiful facility and course though!

Amanas is a must play ... Little depressing since the clubhouse burned down in 16 or 15, but course is still great.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no doubt. I have very similar sentiments towards The Preserve at Rathbun and Bluetop Ridge at Riverside.

Perhaps if you were able to play a the course when they completed the renovations instead of a mixed layout. They do have interesting holes, strategic hazards and very challenging green complexes. It's a fair layout, and there is no eye candy. Both sides are relatively flat. And the conditions are always fantastic, which is the most important part of playing at any course.

Anyway some places that I would recommend around IC/CR would be Cedar Rapids Country Club, Elmcrest Country Club, and Amana Colonies. I'm partial to old school parkland courses.

I wasn't trying to come off harsh towards you, just trying to express how I felt disappointed. And it was under repair, that didn't help.

I have played at Amana Colonies before the clubhouse burned down, very beautiful.

I tried on a pair of those lcv, surprisingly uncomfortable i thought.

I thought they were the most comfortable golf shoes I've ever worn! Haha funny how that works.

Ya i wear lc 3 and love them. I have wide little feet. Super annoying to find good golf shoes. Really want to try some adidas boost

  • 3 weeks later...

I don't know how I've been a member on WRX and haven't stumbled across this thread until now... I'm from SW IA in Underwood so I play mostly in Omaha, NE sadly as I hate the Huskers. There are a few 18 hole courses in Council Bluffs, Fox Run, Dodge Park (now Dodge Riverside) and Bent Tree. I do have family in Urbandale so I'm there several times a year but sadly haven't played any golf there. Anything within 45 min of me that isn't Council Bluffs or Omaha are pretty much 9 hole small town courses.

Last year, I picked up the UA tempo hybrids. First time actually wearing spikeless but they seem to do pretty good. I've been itching to get a pair of UA spikes like the new Spieths or tempo sport.

Nice. I played a quick 9 asst sugar creek. +7, chipping was terrible. Not a bad little track though.

Waukee is where I work. Sugar is where I sub for league. Short but very nice (save for the recent work done over the winter break)

Did west-east course at Beaver Creek in Grimes yesterday. +8 west and +4 east. 3 doubles, two on the west side, are up a lot of my score over par. Driver was horrendous and the greens pretty gosh darn fast. Finally got to play the west course though.

I've always liked Beaver Creek. South course is a GEM too.

Yep, it's narrow off the tees but I like the south course too.

I used to sub in Sugar Creek league too ... Fun league, although I never figured out the scoring method, I went low and won my match a couple times despite having to play off scratch.

But league nights were LONG ... I mean, bordering on 3 hours for 9 holes long.

It's getting worse now. More golfers and still starting at 5:30. First night, done at 8:30. I can see it pushing 8:45 now later on.

Nothing better than seeing that you were starting on hole #1 or #2 ... otherwise, you knew you were going to come off a birdie at 1 and see 3 groups stacked up on that second hole ... especially since it was pretty much guaranteed at least 1 person per group was going to put a ball in the water.

We are venturing out to a different course on Sunday, trying to decide between Otter and Coldwater right now.

Otter + wind = one very tough test of golf

I grew up In Ankeny. If there is no wind, it is blowing 10mph at Otter, minimum.
