Do we have a hive approved putting grip? I am not a fan of the SuperStroke and I am struggling with my Winn Midsize. Need a new feel/look

I can't think of a more personal golfing question than this one.

Stay away from the hive here.

I use Winn AVS Midsize. I have one on my new putter, and the edges are too sharp to me. If I could have blown off my broken in grip and put it on the new stick, I would have done it in a second. I will NEVER change my grip if I can help it. If you're having putting woes, I don't think a grip change gon' help.

As opposed to that Barney Fife debacle yesterday, there's a nice article up from Richie Hunt on the front page. . .

http://www.golfwrx.c...-cup-prospects/

I was having a golf anxiety dream when my wake up light started going off today. Late for the tee. Guy wants me to hit a "new driver". Tee it up. Then, there's a mound behind the ball so I had to hit down on it with the driver. Hit it right down the middle and then it hooked left into the trees. I *NEVER* have GOOD golf dreams. They're always messy like that. . .ball won't stay on the tee. I pick a club, then look up and the hole has changed, etc etc.

Obviously should have played the mound behind the ball on the tee box as GUR. Whether marked or not. :deadhorse:

If its on the tee box, should have moved the ball and stuck the peg in a different area before he teed off. :pimp:

The hive mind has not coalesced when it comes to putters. Everyone does their own thing.

I've tried a few different SuperStrokes and have settled on the Flatso Ultra slim 1.0.

One thing I think has helped my mental state regarding changing putters is gear compromise. I was switching between a wide-flanged insert blade putter (Versa #1W) and regular metal anser blade (Cleveland #1), then settled on the wide-flanged metal anser putter (Cottonwood II). I was switching between a normal pistol grip and bigger SuperStroke (played a 3.0, 2.0, and Flatso 3.0 at various points), and then settled on the Flatso Ultra Slim 1.0 that's in between.

Basically, I took all the gear I was switching back and forth between and found something that's smack in the middle. Maybe it's not the perfect fit, but it keeps me from thinking about different putters.

Agreed. I switched to jumbo size grips after the original grip on my putter was almost down to metal (think dcvince Scotty putter....well maybe not that bad) but I wasnt a fan of the look of the Super Stroke colorways. Buddha had a Grip Master jumbo grip in all black and loved it. Full leather so it felt similar to the original grip I had on.

I love my SS squared putter grip. However, if you want to try something different, I have one of those garsen grips if you want it.

When I got the "new" stick, I did try putting that leather grip on there, which I trashed trying to get it on.

Big part of the grip is changing the swing weight of the putter, too. The new putter is different from the old one in that it is like 1.5 inches longer. It has a considerably different feel, though.

I've never tried the Garsen. Interesting idea

Golf Talk Tuesday : What is your primary chipping club, and your primary pitching club?

I don't know the difference between those two things.

I mostly use my Ping Glide 54. Took me some getting used to when I got it, but I really like it now.

GTT: 56 degree used for 99.5% of shots around the green. Chip, pitch, flop, it don't matter. I've considered dropping the 60 for some time, but I like it for shots from 30 to 100 yards.

Same as PQ really. Been playing everything with my 55* (54 bent weak). Feel like I can hit it high or low, long or short. Keep the 60 in my bag mostly for shots ~50-70 yards. If I had some pressing need for another club I might actually drop the 60 and just learn to hit those shots with my 55, but I don't know what I'd replace it with.

I was thinking of dropping the 60 also, but it's ideal for a full 80 yard shot and great for flops when I'm not chunking it. I guess I would add a hybrid in its place and learn to be more versatile with the 56. I didn't use a 60 for years so...

I'm in no mans land right now. I used to play my 56 on just about all shots, but that seems to be failing me a bit lately. We don't play on greens that are firm and fast enough regularly for me to feel good with that approach.

you should have been at POSH. you would have had your fill of firm and fast.

yes, i'm still talking about the greens.

I've never been big on the hybrid chip. Some people (DC, obviously) make it work well, but I find it too unpredictable. Between the hotter face and low loft, I never know when one is gonna "jump" on me and run way by.

Wouldn't use it for chipping--maybe sometimes. By "in it's place" I meant as the 14th club. I would just slot a 3 hybrid between the 2H and 4 iron. Or maybe a 5 wood.

Getting back to the range talk, I actually asked for my own benefit. Like Siegel, I find myself gravitating towards banging a lot of drivers at the range because (a) it costs me more strokes than any club in the bag and (b) there is nothing that ruins a round of golf more than hitting 3 from the tee and/or having no shot of getting the ball on the green in regulation (because of where you drove it). In other words, it is the biggest weakness in my game, so naturally it is what I try and focus my practice time on. I was just wondering if slipping in some other clubs for a few swings between drivers might help.

I'm planning on spending some 1 on 1 time with Monte when he is here in May (I cant do the full 3 day clinic) to try and figure out how much of it is a rhythm thing and how much is flawed mechanics independent of rhythm/transition.

We were talking about this at Clustered when I played that shot (to not great results).

Like any other, it's one that needs practice. The problem is that it's a shot that has low utility so it's hard to find time to practice it. I only like that shot when I have a decent amount of sticky fringe or fairway to cover and the ball is on a really bare lie. The hybrid gets it in the air a bit so it avoids some of the sticky stuff that the putter can't. If the lie is decent I'd rather just chip it with a normal club.

If I remember right you suggested playing a belly wedge there. That's fine too, but it has the same problem as the hybrid shot in that it's difficult because it's a rare shot that people don't practice.

It's usually always some flawed mechanics, not just that you can't swing a club with good rhythm. Your good and bad days just depend more on how your rhythm and timing are.
