The 6 Hybrid

My pops just put a Ping G425 7 H in his bag. Freaking hilarious how well he hits that thing. Unlike any 7 iron I have ever seen him hit. Why struggle?

6 is nothing.  I play hybrids through a 31* 7 hybrid.  Cobra FlyZ XL with 65g shafts.   Nothing comes close to how long or easy they are to hit.  Same lofts and lengths as the corresponding iron.  I start irons at a 31* PXG 0211DC 8 iron.  The 31* 7h goes 10 yards further then my 31* 8 iron.  I have only 6 irons in my bag, 31* 8 through 60* LW.

For me there are two main considerations and a couple of minors.

 

The first is whether, given the strong lofts of a modern 6 (or 7) iron I still have the swing speed at age 60 to elevate them enough to create correct gapping.

 

Evidence indicates I don't. A while ago I realised my 5 iron averaged about the same as my 6. More recently I realised my 6 was now about the same as my 7.

 

Hybrids with increased loft gaps have fixed that.

 

The second is shot shape. I have a persistent draw with my irons that wanders too often into pull/hook.

 

I'm not sure whether it is the lack of offset, but I hit my iron replacement hybrids (5, 6 and maybe 7) a lot straighter.

 

I can even fade them on occasion. I can't fade an iron.

 

Then there is spin.

 

I have a strongly positive AoA driver swing, which is good.

 

But due to swing flaws I also have a positive iron swing. Which is bad. My irons spin way less than they should.

 

Hybrids pamper sweepers. So my 6 hybrid, for example, spins about 1k more than my 6 iron.

 

My only issue with lofted hybrids is that for some reason I have issues with them off the tee.

Hey I will not make any bones about it and Uncle Cardy knows this. The 9 wood is in my bag and I can open it up to get to 26* if need be. But I still carry a 5 iron mostly for bump and run and to get out of jail. Cardy knows this hole the little 15th par 3 on my course. In the shootout Saturday I hit the little 9 wood to 2 ft. One of the groups on 14 saw the shot and afterwards asked me what I hit. I told them 9 wood and they laughed. Prompted Big Bear ( Cardy knows him too) to ask where did his ball end up with his 7 iron. BTW we did win the event. Since my back is doing good for now I have gotten quite a reputation as of late around our place with the 7 & 9 woods.

I have a Titleiet TS3 25* cranked to 27*. Stock Japanese build with Nippon steel shaft that is a little shorter, so plays like a 5/6 iron. But way more confidence than I ever had with a 5 or a 6 iron, favorite club in the bag.

Just got a Titleist 913H 6 hybrid and it is solid gold.
