Garmin S20 GPS Watch

Recommended Posts

Just got my s20. Been using the neo xs and a bushnell v2 scope.

Updated as soon as I got it and had no problem acquiring courses in area.

Opened files and found three sets of course files. I assume that the gmapsup1 are the us maps as they are the largest file. I deleted the gmapsup3 assuming they are the european maps as they are the smallest to make room for any updates in future. This left me with 19.1 MB free.

Hoping to take out today and see if autoshot works. Has anyone heard anymore on editing shots? I will probably keep club tracking off as I can remember which club used. Yardage and hit location will be able to track in speadsheet to get stat tracking on stats I want.

Would like to see courses put gps in driving ranges and vendors add the ranges to the units. Would make distance tracking for all clubs much easier.

For those of you who entered a driver distance for club tracking. Are you entering just estimated carry or carry/roll? I would think the calculator would be easier and more accurate if the original input was from a mid iron as most golfers have a better idea of the carry for say a 7iron.

Finally got through to support. He explained the problem is a naming issue of the new map files. They are in the process of switching naming conventions so that their maps will be compatible over all devices, but Express has to be tweaked to flash the watch's firmware to recognize the new naming format (all courses were actually installed correctly, but the watch couldn't recognize the file names to open them). There should be an update to Express coming out in the near future that will address this.

In the meantime, he opened my account and reset my course files to the old names, so now I just have to re-sync and all should be good until they get the other issue resolved.

**Edit** Played 9 nine holes tonight, and courses are back on. Still showed the incorrect Par for 2 holes as always, and missed a few chips. I could be happy that at least my M/B/F yardages show up again, but will not be satisfied with this. If I wanted S3 functions, I could have bought an S3 somewhat cheaper. None of the extra stuff is functioning 100%, and I think after 3-4 months they should have this perfect?

I can use my watch now at least, but will still keep up blasting them on social media until it works correctly or I get an answer as to why it can't/doesn't.

"No courses nearby" happened to me too yesterday (have the European map). Called the Swedish garmin support and the guy I talked to said they just got information about this problem and how to solve it. If I understood it right they did a sort of reset of the account but little more complicated and then I was only supposed to update/sync with the European maps again. Hopefully this works until next time I play!

My S20 seems to be ok as far as recognizing courses so if I am reading these last several posts correctly i'm thinking I need to refrain from connecting with the web site until Garmin gets some of these bugs worked out.

Does this make sense?

Callaway Mavrik Max 10.5°
Callaway XR 16 3 wood
Callaway Mavrik Max 3 thru 5 hybrids
Srixon z565 6 thru PW
48°, 52° & 58° Cleveland CBX wedges
Ping Sigma 2 Kushin C flat stick

All subject to change in the blink of an eye.........and I blink a lot.

I got the no courses found bug today. Found out just before tee off in my first comp :(

I am trying to do a factory reset on it now and just install pacific map update but am getting an error message saying the map file is too large for my device and I need to free up some space. Not sure how this has happened as I just factory reset it. Guess I will need to call Garmin :(

Same here...updated my watch on Thursday and didn't realize I had the bug until I got out to the course. LOL

Is there a way on either the S20 or Garmin Connect Mobile that you can review the scorecard summary other than when you finish the front and back nines!

I don't believe so, as I don't think anything is saved/viewable until you sync. I guess you could try pausing round, syncing, and then restarting round, but that seems like a lot of work. Also, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't show up on the watch itself.

I just noticed that the garmin connect app lets you view the hole "overview" maps now when you go to your scorecards. Although there is still no editing(not holding my breath for this, I don't know if it can even be implemented into the current software), it appears you can do all the same stuff on the app as the website as in select clubs, Mark shots OB or delete them completely.

I contacted support today(Australia). Said I had the no known courses bug which is well documented online with multiple people having the same issue. She wasn't sure and chatted to the tech team who then said they would fix it up. After fixing it up she asked me to unplug my watch from my computer and close Garmin Express and re-open and connect the watch and that the issue is now resolved.

She asked me to update the watch with the latest maps but when I tried to do that I got a not enough space error and to select which maps I would like to keep but it wouldn't allow me to select any as they were all greyed out and not selectable. A case has been opened and they would come back to me regarding this issue but my watch should now be usable and find my courses. I had to send them a zip file containing the Garmin folder that mounts to the computer when you plug the device in.

So I went and tested it and found out that my watch still has the no courses found error. Called Garmin again and got through to another person. They basically said there are no known issues with the watch and support forums don't count(lol....) I say OK well regardless I need this resolved as the watch is currently useless if It can't find any golf courses. She says OK we will send you through details for you to send the watch to us so we can test if it is faulty or repair it for you.

I am feeling pretty pissed off about this situation now as they have not sent me anything and I am going to have to either call them tommorrow or just give up and return the watch where I brought it from and try something else... I will sleep on it and decide in the morning.. For $300(Australian) I expected a high quality product and when the watch is working it was great...

I didn't really want to get the bushnell laser as I didn't want to have to get something out everytime and wanted distance to hazards as well but maby that is going to be the way to go.. I could return my watch and sell the truswing that I also purchased and probably get a pretty decent Bushnell or another kind of watch..

Very strange what seems to be going on with these updates and the uneven support (which I'm guessing varies greatly depending on what country you're in). You'd think they could get an update out there that solves this problem for all -- unless my earlier guess that there are variations in the hardware that has been sold is the reason for the inconsistency.

In any case, it seems like once you have a version of the software that works, you should not do any updates to it for now. That's where I'm heading. Although I'd certainly like new updates that add or improve features, I DO NOT want them at the expense of losing the connection to my home course!

I should add that my watch has been performing flawlessly since the last update. Even the odometer function is working perfectly now for me when I'm away from the course, and I've come to really like getting notifications of all kinds on my wrist.

Once again, Garmin, you've got an enormous winner in this watch if you can get the software update issues under control.

I agree with this - I haven't updated my watch from 2.70 since reading about the new bugs.

Well I managed to fix one of the issues myself. The issue Garmin will get back to me about within 10 days lol...

There is a hidden folder on the device that I am assuming is similar to a recycle bin. So mounting the drive and deleting that hidden folder free up 53mb and now I can install the updates.

Once that is done I will check to see if that fixes to the no courses found error. Fingers crossed!

Just got off the phone with NA product support and they seem well aware of the problem and have a quick solution. It's too bad you have to call to get the new file pushed to your express account. I'm not sure why the cant just push the update like they do all their updates.

I just received notification of another update this afternoon. I am currently on version 2.70 and have not experienced any issues..I am golfing tonight and do not want to risk an issue with this update. Has anyone gotten an update today and know what the changes are?

EDIT: Maybe I should have checked the website first...duh!

Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.80:

  • Added handling for invalidating sunrise/sunset data if we detect that time zone has been changed. Sunrise/sunset is calculated and updated the next time a GPS fix is achieved.
  • Added handling to ensure scorecard is saved properly if a round is still active when plugging the device into a computer.
  • Added ability to initiate a sync with the device from Garmin Connect Mobile.
  • Improved Auto Shot detection.
  • Fixed issue that kept device from downloading customer-specific golf club gear.

Question still stands...had anyone updated to 2.80 yet?

FWIW, I had a Bushnell NeoX watch before the S20 and the hesitation in the NeoX to give accurate readout on current distance was very frustrating for me. The ability of the Garmin watch to update distance readout practically instantaneously is a superior feature for me.

I hated standing in the fairway beside my ball waiting while the numbers slowly updated to provide the correct distance to FCB of the green.

i updated to 2.80 and played today. Had no problems with the watch at all. Found my course quickly and it worked fine for me. Not sure exactly what they fixed with AutoShot at this time so cannot comment any further.

I just read this entire thread and am soooooooo glad I did. I've had the S2 for going on three years and have

never had a single glitch - ever. I've always been a bit unsure about the seemingly mismatched alliance between

a game of feel and tempo and high-tech applications. It seems to me that a lot of what is being offered is a

bit of a distraction from the actual game itself.

Anyway, regardless, I think I'll try a modest upgrade to the S4. Caveat emptor deluxe.
