Impulse Purchase: Wilson Progressive Irons

Always loved the Progressives so threw a low ball offer at a guy on ebay with a brand new set...and he accepted. Guess I'm all in now! I've got an old Spalding 3 wood that was my go to club off the tee back in the day so that's covered. An old Anser would be a nice compliment. Maybe a couple of old Cleveland wedges? Getting excited...

You've got a pitching wedge, get a Sandy Andy and an 8802 and you're on your way to a vintage Wilson set. A laminated Whale would go nicely with these, a little stratabloc four wood or something.

Nice! I know where there's a set new except for one or two that's been hit. I could've got them with the heads still in wrappers but passed like a fool!! Plus they were what I thought was cheap at $150, is that about right or too high?

BTW, just got the clubs today and they are beautiful! I love the weight of the Firestick shafts. So many clubs of that era used Dynamic Gold and those feel too heavy to me.

I bought a set of 2-PW on Black Friday last year, at Play It Again Sports, for $5 in the bargain barrel. They are mildly abused but I was going to see if I could make a single length set out of them but have lost enthusiasm for the project.

Yep those JPs are the bees knees. I have a 56 and 58 I play from time to time in fact they are my back up wedges if the 588s miss behave. I played an old R-90 for years and recently found one in good shape (except the rotted Winn grip) at the Good Will for 2.99.

I have a few of these sets, I like them however they feel a bit hard for forged. I like the concept, it is great to hit an 8 iron blade, and a cavity back 5. Makes sence for better players, not great players that want all blades, (do they still exist)?

Just got back from playing the new sticks and enjoyed them. Can't say I struck the ball overly well but it wasn't the clubs fault.

 

Memorable shots included a pured 4 iron to 10 feet on one par 3 and a really nice 7 iron to about 3 feet on another par 3. Hit a 3 iron pin high on a 211 yard par 3, although the last 15 of that was run up because I hit the ball thin. Hit another long 3 as second shot into a par 5 and although the shot was just off the green on the right I was really happy regardless. On the bad side, there were two shots where I hit the ball fat and lost appreciable distance. The sharp a** leading edge is very unforgiving. I also had a couple shots that came up short. The lofts are more than a club weak compared to my Ping G gamers.

 

Overall, I enjoyed playing with the clubs. I checked and tweaked loft and lie last night and all clubs were pretty close to spec. Biggest error with only 1 degree, which is something I can't say for the various Ping clubs I've checked lately.

Played the Progressives for twelve years until they were totally worn out. I gave them to a teaching pro just over three years ago for him to use with his students and I often think about asking him for them back just for the nostalgia. Happy playing!
