4 Club tourney next...Which 4 clubs do you choose?

I got all excited to play this format and emailed our club president to ask if we would be playing in this format ever. He said that they used to, but guys complained and said that it was a waste of a round. It sounds like they were scared of the challenge to me! haha. I understand that guys wouldn't want to, but it sure sounds fun to me!

At 6200 yds, I think I'd go 20* H, 7i, 54SW putter assuming the rough will be long and penal. If the rough isn't that long, I might go 4W instead. I can hit a variety of shots with the hybrid that I can't with the fw.

Also, statistically, bomb and gouge is better than laying up.

6200 yards sounds sort of like Brack in SA from the blues so if they yardages are similar I would be looking at 175 yard par 3s.

If that's the case, I would take D, 7i, 56*, putter.

I will either be able to reach Par 5s in two with that combo, or layup for a nice 30-40 yard pitch. Would give me a great chance to birdie the Par 3s and I can 3/4, 1/2, knock down a 7i better than a 5/6.

the par 3s range from 115 to 225. Rough will be pretty low typically. Full, healthy rough but nothing to worry about. The issue with errant shots would be trees. While short from tee to green in most cases, the fws are all rather thin with trees on both sides, and the greens are really small too. Since it is a stableford, and I don't foresee a ton of birdies or eagles, I think being consistent and making pars could give one a good shot to win. Also, I can hit my 5 iron off the tee as far as 250 if I put it back in the stance and hit a sweeping draw/hook, so I don't think distance will be an issue there. I will be playing all par 5s as 3 shot holes. Should be an interesting round for sure!

250 5i?

yeah you don't need a wood

I live in Denver, that helps for sure...and that is not a stock shot by any means. On a tee, back in the stance, forward press a little extra, sling a big hook with some good roll. Not a shot I try to hit regularly but I can hit that shot, so this type of tourney is where I would use it.

I would go with 5w, 7i, PW and putter. I might trade out a 3 or 4 hybrid for the 5w it would really be a flip of a coin between those 3.

Driver- Tour Edge EXS 220

4W- Sub 70 949X

4H- Sub 70 949X

Wedges - Sub 70 286 50+54 degree

You're going against the grain. Most have said they would use a fairway wood or hybrid, you have elected to start with a 5i. Although I guess if I could hit mine 250 I might start there and load up on wedges.

This is my plan and totally on purpose. I imagine most of the league members will do the same, and go with a driver or fw wood and leave it to one iron for every second shot. With a 5 iron and 8 iron along with a PW, I will have many more options, be in the fw more often (I hope), and should have more chances at birdie. All a good theory I think, just have to make good with the 5 iron and hit fairways.

17-18* club -- whether it's a fairway wood or a hybrid

6-7 iron

PW

SW or LW depending on what you're comfortable with

I would skip a putter as I putt decently blading the wedge. I know that's not an option for everybody.

As stated before, you have to do some math and look at the par 3's. Then you can get an idea of what club you will need off the tee for par 4's. Par 5's shouldn't really factor in to the club decision.

I won one of these at my course. 6200 yards, par 70, I took driver, 7iron, PW, putter.

I figured I hit driver a lot anyway, so not having it would change too much of my normal game. I could get on all the par 4s with either the 7i or PW without having to manufacture it too much, same for the par 3s. Only a couple of holes where I would not normally hit driver and I just hit a low bunt with it on those holes to get in play.

We only played 13 holes, which meant I didn't have to contend with the two longest par 4s on the course, 17 and 18, but I could get there or thereabouts with a drive and 7i if hit well.

Can't believe anyone would forgo a putter, you use it on every hole! Potential to bleed a lot of shots there attempting to putt with a wedge or something.

Practice putting with my 4 or 5 iron.

So then 3w, 4i, 7i, 50*

Hmm..maybe not

3w. I have it cranked to highest loft and play it as a 3-4 wood.

4i. For putting and long iron shots. I do play a long course.

7i. I practice 100 yard to 160 shots with it.

Pw. It is between my favorite wedge and my best pitching 9iron at the moment.

Putt with 4i. My putting is s*** these days anyway.

I think the first question is would I carry a putter. My putting is not the strongest, so would look into putting with a long iron or blading a wedge. Not needing a putter would open that spot up.

Next question would be the exact yardages of the par 3's and 4's (including distances required to reach dog legs (if any)).

Without knowledge of the above, I'd go 3i, 7i, GW, putter. If I could putt with 3i or GW, would probably add the 3W or driver (depending on lengths of par 4's).

We play one every year here and the winners always have a putter in the bag. I usually go with a 3 hybrid, 7 iron and 54*wedge. It works out well. Good luck. Fun tournaments.

Your putter

Your wedge from sand / most versatile

Your hybrid/fairway "rescue" of choice

Your most common iron if you tee off with the club above

It's not about specific clubs; it is about versatility. Your playing approach will choose the clubs for you. It could mean a lot of different choices for different people. Statistically, putting with a putter will be critical. Driving is less important.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

the guys saying it depends on the distance of the par 3s and par 4s have a good point. for instance, if you can get to all the par 3s with a 8i (definitely possible on a 6200y course) then you might prefer that over say a 7i. but then you'd want to look at the par 4s and see if you can still reach with that 8i, and if not (probably not), what's your strategy, its possible then you'd be better off with using a hybrid as your tee club and then going hybrid on your 2d shot in long par fours and maybe then if you have an 8i taking a sw. however, if you have to carry a 5i or 6i to reach the par3s then maybe you decide that you could go 3w/5i on the long par 4s and 3w/pw on the shorter ones. that sort of thing. to me, you work back from the par3s and how you want to play them (nothing wrong with laying just short of the green on a long par3 and chipping up for instance) and then do the same thing w the par4s, see what mix works best (roughly, nothing will fit perfect). i think if you look at your course and the sorts of shots you need to play, the bigger choices such as your tee club (3w or hybrid) will be dictated by how your course plays both on distance to individual fairways and potential 2d shots. same thing with the next club based on reaching par 3s and par 4s. whether you take sw or pw as the 3d club is prob an easy decision after you decide the other two.

Using driver makes no sense to me. Most common response seems to be putter, wedge, mid iron and driver/fwy/hybrid. On par 4s and 5s if you have a fwy your third shot will be much shorter if you go fwy/fwy instead of driver/mid iron on your first two shots. But then again I don't hit my 7i 200 yards like everyone else...

When I worked in golf on one of those slow days in the shop we had crazy idea of chopping a blade 2i down to 7i length for a employee 3 club tourney. Easy as hell to hit w/ the shortend length and would run out forever. The 2i could double as a distance iron but also a putter.

So my setup would go:

chopped 2i

5i

8i
