4 Club tourney next...Which 4 clubs do you choose?

Recommended Posts

Next tourney in the men's league is a 4 club, as in choose 4 clubs and only 4, including putter, and then move up one tee box and we are playing it as a modified stableford. I have two theories here. First is, from one up, the course play only like 6200 yards or so. So I would go 5 iron, 7 or 8 iron, PW, and putter. All par 5s played as 3 shot holes. I think that set up would get me to or near every green in reg. My other theory is to bomb and gouge, so bring driver, mini driver, or 4 wood. Then 8 iron and PW and putter. I am simply not a consistent enough driver of the ball for that to be my first choice, but I am considering it.

So, stories of similar tournaments or your opinions on the 4 clubs to use? Let's chat about this, it should be an interesting style of play.

If putter is a given, then, for me, the other three would be something like this:

3W

Mid-iron (depends on par 3 distances and other key holes)

Probably a PW or GW

A lot depends on the course and the distances you hit your various clubs.

I would make sure to have enough club so I could get at (or at least around) the green in regulation on every hole.

Good luck

That is my theory and with a 5 iron and 8 iron that should be totally doable. There are a handful, maybe two or three holes where it will take two 5 irons but in the grand scheme of things, that is still a shot at it.

Assuming you hit your clubs as far as I do, I'd do the following set up:

3H - 220-230 club

6 or 7 iron - 165-180 club, depending on how well you hit either of them

PW - my knock down PW is around 115, and if I step on one I can squeeze 140 out of it

Putter

I wouldn't do a 3W just for the simple fact that, while you do hit it further, if you get into any sort of rough it's almost useless.

OP Like your thinking and since you said you are not a consistent driver of the ball I would go with the clubs you picked. Personally I drive the ball pretty straight so would go with driver, 7i or 8i, sw, putter.

4 clubs?! That's too easy. The real challenge is 3 clubs. Then you never know wether to bring your putter or not.

With four I would go:

3w

7i

54*

Putter

For me personally

Hybrid (240 carry)

5-8 iron (depending on the par 3 distances)

PW,

LW

no putter. I can still belly a wedge. I know I won't make any putt of distance, but in this format, most people won't be making many birdies to start, so I would rather have the exta wedge to get round the green

For me it would be ...

18 or 20degree hybrid would get me to most greens in two (or three).

7i because it's by far and away my best club and gets used more than any other in my bag.

SW because it covers that awkward gap between choked 7 and chipping distance. And I know I'll end up in a bunker at some point.

Putter because I can't putt with anything else.

In the end, that's not far off what I usually play with anyway (six or seven clubs), so it doesn't seem that tough an exercise.

I would personally take:

Cobra 3/4H

8i

56° wedge

putter

If it was a 3 club, I would take same w/o putter and putt with my hybrid.

Now, I play a Cobra Fly-Z 3/4 Hybrid that adjusts from 19°-22°. I currently game it at 21.5°, only hit it out of the rough and typically hit it 215 yds off the deck. I have never tried or played with it (thinking I should), but could maybe get it out to 240-250Y @ 19° off a tee.

But, now im curious, I wouldn't be allowed to adjust it during play, would I?

I don't think you'll gain 25+yrds with a 2.5* loft change. Unless your fairways are concrete, and no, no adjusting once your round has started.

If you're not very accurate with the driver you'll have the most fun and the best score with a long iron, mid iron and a wedge. Make sure you have a wedge that you're comfortable pitching and chipping with, as you will be missing a lot of greens. I would take a 5i, 8i and gap wedge. I had a similar tourney recently with just a 5i and a pitching wedge and played my handicap easily. You'll be amazed how much easier the game is if your third shot is from the fairway instead of the rough around the greens. Good luck and let us know how you did.

I am going 5 iron, 8 iron, PW, and putter. Tourney isn't until next weekend so I will have some time to work on using that PW for a wide variety of shots. I guess I already do so it wont be too big of a change.

My rationaL was that the combination of the 2.5° change in loft plus hitting off of a tee, instead of hitting out of the rough would account for that yardage. I could very well be wrong. I figured on about 10Y increase from loft and hitting 10-15 Y further off of a tee than out of the rough. I currently play a 5W and only hit that hybrid when I'm in the 2nd cut, so that's what my current yardage average is based off of. And that's something like rule 4.2a, right? Not altering characteristics after start of round? Thank you for the clarification!

Love these Tournaments!

3 wood

7 iron

52* Wedge

Putter

No problem teeing off any Par 4 or 5 with my 3 wood

7 Iron is very versatile, jump on it for 190 and can finesse it down to the gap wedge.

Gap wedge covers 130 and in, low bounce so I can open it up if need be

Putter. Can't play without a putter. Half your shots a round roughly are with a putter so you might as well bring it!
