Ahh yes, the old man goat humping routine...  Been there many time myself, mind you, I think each of us have a slightly different version of said affliction, but I know of what you speak.  Maybe it's just earlier in the morning and my brain is clear, so I'm more perceptive to the vagaries of southern dialect, after all we're all just a bunch of good ole boys.

The pineapple follies -- and to think that the medical profession still resorts to pharmaceuticals for bowl prep.  Just eat a whole pineapple and you'll be good to go.  I remember the first time we went to Cuba and gorging out on all manner of tropical fruits.  No need for an over the counter cleanse and it tastes much better too!

Divining for water -- I remember hiring this old timer a number of years ago to divine a new water well for me at the farm.  The old one had collapsed.  He had so many marks with landscaper's spray paint all over the yard I could have drilled pretty much where ever I wanted.  I picked a handy spot across the lane from the barn and drilled there.  Got about 200 gal/min, but it wasn't sweet.  Wasn't too bad though compared to what we had before.  Not sure if that was a waste of $200 or not?  The well driller didn't say much...

Tim Horton's Brier is underway starting last Friday.  We're at the half way point of round robin play with a couple of teams undefeated so far  -- 4 time champion Kevin Koe from Alberta and relative newcomer Jason Gunnlaughson from Manitoba.  I've been rooting for Glen Howard's rink from Ontario.  He's there as a wild card.  Glen is 58 years old!  Glen is a 4 time Canadian and world champion with wins over 4 decades.  He's not actually playing because he had a snowmobile accident and broke 9 ribs!  He asked Wayne Middaugh to substitute for him as skip.  Wayne is 53 and has played with Glen for years, but hasn't played competitively since 2013.  They're on a bit of a roll going 4-1 so far with the last two games decided by Middaugh's final shot to come from behind.  It's a bit like rooting for Tom Watson at the 2009 Open Championship at St. Andrew's.  I don't expect them to win, but it's quite the ride to see how far they can go!

 

It's kinda funny watching the young guys on the team question the calls of these two old timers.  I'm like; dude!  Don't question what they see.  These guys have been playing professionally since before you were born!  They've seen everything!

windy....muddy....water soaked.....not mowed since last October....but it was the first time out this year, and I had 

absolutely no issues with goat humping.! Couldn't find the darn animal..at least I wouldn't have looked so foolish.

I could have petted him...chased him.. whatever, First time this year, and as near as i could count i had a pretty blah 66.

Got an around about call from the golf course yesterday.  Around about because the clubhouse manager contacted me via FB Messenger first and then I called her.  She said that her phone had died during the winter and that she lost all her contact info.  Seemed a bit suspicious as she picked right up when I called her on her cell phone and she knew it was me as soon as I said hello.  At any rate, she wanted to know if I was going to work on Thursdays to which I replied that I didn't want to, instead preferring to play with my men's league group that day.  I think that caught her off guard... 😏

 

Apparently the plan is to open the first week of April, weather and COVID permitting.  We're in the home stretch now!

I did.  I never really planned on continuing on with it after we moved.  COVID sort of changed that last year.

 

I think that I figured out last year that for the hours I was putting in and what I could play there for at senior rates, I wasn't making much per hour.  The job became considerably more physical last year and there were far more confrontations with golfers than in previous years.  The girls in the clubhouse made hourly wages on top of golfing privileges whereas the play co-ordinators were volunteer roles with free membership as compensation.  Didn't seem particularly fair especially when gov't were subsidizing wages for small business during the pandemic.  We were all taking the same risks.  Knowing the owners I'm sure that they took advantage of the gov't largesse.

I should report that it's 20°C today!  Of course it's raining, but things will green up fairly quickly I would think.  I have daffodils, tulips and garlic pushing through.  It's a bit early for buds to be swelling, but that will be the next thing.  Spring is definitely here even though the calendar says not for another 9 days.

 

The painting is all done for the room redecoration project.  I'm just waiting on the hardwood to be installed in two weeks.  Next project up is a patio cover that we will be taking estimates on next week.  We're going to have a roof built over the patio with aluminum frame and acrylic panels.  It's a fairly pricy option compared to a wood/steel structure, but it provides cover and shade while letting about 50% of the light through so that our kitchen and bathroom won't be dark.  30 year warranty on materials with snow and wind rated design which will give us a clean and airy finished product.

Greens must be rock hard!  I watched Ryan Moore hit a perfectly nice shot short of the hole on 17 and it took a bounce and over into the water. Not much room for error. The difference between a good shot and a bad one is very small.

I heard 'em say on TV that the green on 17 is new.  Any balls landing near the hole were gonna bounce

on over into the water.  Some guys got lucky and their ball stopped on the back fringe an inch or 2 from

going in the drink.  Saw one of them make birdie from there while guys that hit essentially the same

shot were making a double.

Well been a busy week for me

Played the Scramble and 9 and dine last week--- I think I previously documented all of that. Woke up Sunday morning and the back was ok but the ankles and knees were swollen bad could hardly walk. Called off of Church because I could hardly walk around the house much less get to the car and then climb 20 steps to the booth. Stayed in the house all day with the feet propped up. Seemed to help. Got to do some research while sitting around and did some diet changes. Went on that thing of eating Peanut Butter and eating pickles and drinking pickle juice. Sounds crazy but it has helped me. Cleaned me out good. Laid off the red meat and started eating a lot of vrggies and I am feeling good.

Had a Doc appointment injury related Tuesday. I think the insurance company is putting pressure on them. I am not fully healed or rehabed and can not pass a required DOT physical. The insurance company is trying to kick me loose and I am not going for it. I hired a Lawyer Wednesday and not a Ambulance chaser either a real Professional Lawyer specializing in Work Comp. Have another appointment with one of the Docs In Florence SC Monday. He is one of the insurance company docs. Main thing is the Insurance Company Docs are not listening when I tell them things like I can not move on rainy days etc. They do not seem to care it is all abouth the $$$$. Well I decided to act. The Lawyer I hired along with others plays Golf and knows exactly what I am talking about on range of motion and balance. Actually the lawyers had a local Doc examine me yesterday and he agrees because of range of motion and balance issues I am NOT fit to operate a Commercial Vehicle safely.

 

In between all of that I did manage to attempt to hit some balls. I do not hit anything well including the MacHogans. Was not going to play the shootout today but one of the guys called. I tried to beg off but he said at least my short game was spot on and I could wedge and putt. I decided at the last minute last night to try to play my graphite shafted KZGs. I did hit those things good. Did some last minute thrashing last night putting new grips on them. I had pulled them off and put them on another set. I use air so no problem switching. Also put my Old Homna driver in the bag because last week I was hooking the snot out of the M-6. I told them I would try 9 and if not doing any good I would pull out and they could alternate for my shot. Ok gotta go get ready 8:00 tee time.

Sorry to hear about your issues @BIG STU.  I thought that you had bitten off quite a chunk with that much golf in that short a time.  Just take it easy and make sure that you get yourself completely healed up and work yourself back into golf shape gradually.

I haven't watched any professional golf this year at all!  I just can't stand it.  Maybe I need to watch the ladies or the Champions Tour, but the regular tour is a no go.  I actually despise what De Chambeau is trying to do to the game.  Can't stand his attitude either.  He's not the face of golf, but more like the embodiment of everything that is currently wrong with the game.  Numbers have overtaken all sports as everyone craves an advantage with data.  I read an article recently that deals with the current trend that fetishizes data.  The prediction is that we will soon become so mechanistic and so reductive in our thinking that all creativity will be lost!  You need balance and we have lost our sense of balance. 🤔

Good rant Sco but maybe if you watched you would have a different opinion of Da Beast. Long 

drive guys have tried to make it on tour and couldn't. Monte Scheinblum even tried it a few times

and of course, Jamie Sadlowski and others. Da Beast is a golfer first. Don't forget he was a fine

college player and a US Amateur champion.......and won on tour before he started this long

drive stuff. People often complain about cookie cutter swings and cookie cutter players. Well,

you don't get that with Bryson. He's a unique guy out there.

 

Also, I think he has a great attitude and he is very open with the press; tells them everything he's

thinking and admits his failures.  He is also popular among the players and if he had a bad or a

weird attitude I don't think he would be. When the galleries are back in full; look for Bryson to

have big galleries cause I believe he's become a big draw for the game.  He's even getting

coverage lately in the non golf media.

I doubt it.  I've seen all I want of him on Sports Center highlights...

 

AS far as the galleries, I think it's the wow factor.  How far will he hit it this time?  There's no magic in what he does.  It's a simple matter of muscle and physics.  He's creative without being creative if you follow me.  A computer algorithm's approach to the game.  If I wanted to watch a machine's approach to the game I think that I would prefer JEFF's.  At least he has a sense of humour! 😏

It's all good. We'll have to agree to disagree. Hitting long accurate drives is a skill in my book. 

Nevertheless, iron play and putting.......you have to have a complete game. Early in his career

Tiger dominated the tour with distance but it was his skill with an iron in hand that really

set  him apart from his fellow competitors. All the greats in the game; from Jack to all the

rest were not only long but also great iron players. 

 

I don't think Bryson will ever approach the level of skill of Tiger. The young guy most are

pointing to as the best iron player in the game is Collin Morikawa......and the stats back that up. 

Strokes gained approach to the green he is solidly #1 right now. Collin may, in time, end up

having the better career compared to Bryson, and he is not known as a long hitter.

 

As far as what I've heard the modern game is all about stats and data. I'll grant that. Once

some go down that road others are forced to to keep up. The thing is, once a player tees

off in a tournament the only stat/data that matter is the number on the scorecard. I liked

listening to Lee Westwood talk about his mental approach these days. He is just going

around these courses smiling and having fun......and playing great golf.  I don't think he

cares a lick about stats when he's out there playing. 

 

I've heard Rory say many times over the years that he would like to get his mind back to

the way it was when he was playing as a kid. The stats are driving everyone out there to 

see their strengths and weaknesses and work on improving their stats. If you're ranked

95th in strokes gained putting it's pretty obvious there's room for improvement so you

would be a fool if you're not trying to improve your putting. The thing is what do you do

to get better? My guess is that for most of these guys it's all mental and whatever will

get them into a better frame of mind is what will work.....and what that is might be

surprising.

Don't get my wrong; the man has skills.  I just don't care for the way in which he feels the best approach is bludgeon a course rather than work with it creatively.

 

He gets results, but I wonder how long he will be able to keep it together with the ferocity of his swing.  He looks like a lat tear just waiting to happen.  Don't get me started about him and the way he putts.  He makes it work, but man it looks like a machine out there!

Well I have not watched it that much but Bryson excites me!! I have been very interested lately. He does his own thing with a combination of Hogan and VJ's work ethic-- Seems to have nerves like Tiger and for me as thrilling as Phil.

But hey just we have a difference of opinion on this you are still my friend and I will play golf or have a coffee with you in the drop of a hat

Well yesterday was good for me in many ways--- Did not have any help on the scramble team seriously--- Had a local guy I know who is a great guy but does not play that well. Had 2 snowbirds that contributed Zilch. We shot +6 ( 78) which aint worth jack in a scramble but good for me. Main thing I had no back pain. Funny we shot that and I did not make any putts but did not putt bad. Everything I putted scared the hole but you have days like that. LOL we had this one snowbird that wanted to be Captain Ovious made a comment on every shot every one hit. Got on my nerves I mean nice guy but man he got on my nerves. One hole he was analyzing a putt and was 180* off everything. I had to point out that Terry and myself play the course every week if not more and I have played it on and off for 20 years. On some wedge shots I had went back to my old play book turning the face on the 56* wide open and going to my "Uptown Charlie Brown" high flopping spin. That guy commented on how high and spinny I hit it. Asked me if I had a 64* wedge? I told him well technically it could be. He could not fathom it. Later on the 10th hole none of them had hit a good drive. I knew we were out of it by then. I tried a Hail Mary for me a slight draw around the corner. Not a bad shot but I over cooked it a tad. Which I will admit I do not control a draw all that well. Was kinda behind the tree blocking the green around 170 out. Well all 3 of them guys topped their balls trying to go under the tree. I winked at Terry and told him I was going to try something from way back in my play book. I used to do this shot with a laminate 6 wood. So I told Terry what I was going to attempt. Took the 19* 5 wood and opened it up. Went over the tree landed on the front of the green but spun it back off the front. Captain Ovious asked if that was a 7 wood? I told him technically it could be. Yep I had it lofted up to maybe 21*. He had no clue. Terry was about to fall off the cart trying not to laugh. I think the capper of the day was our last hole. The wind had gotten up some and we had about 180 to the pin. Of course none of them had come close to the green. I told Terry what I was going to try. And he has played enough golf with me to know what a "Stuey Stinger" is. I did the turn down 4 iron UGLLLY! about a chest high stinger that hopped up on the green. Captain Ovious said that was ugly--- I looked at him and said well we are putting where ar you at?  Terry knows me well and says I gave him my death stare. I know the guy was quiet for the first time that day. In fact he did not stay for the after round meal which was steak. I told Terry I felt bad about running him off. Terry laughed and told me he had it coming. But yeah I went back to playing my game to the best of my physical ability. My regular team had split for this week because 2 of the players had guests down. In fact one of the guys apoliged to me but I told him that was unnecessary that I had to play like hell and had all the pressure on me which was good. I had went back to golfing my ball my way and playing my somewhat agressive style. Oh BTW Captain Ovious was amazed I carried a 4 iron. I told him toungue in cheek check back next week the 3 iron would be in the bag as soon as I changed the shaft. Terry laughed and said if I had hit the 3 iron like the I did the 4 iron that ball would have been in the out house behind the green. I told Terry naah I would have never knuckle down turn the 3 iron like that on that shot. Sorry to ramble but yesterday was one of the best days fun wise and really golf wise since my accident
