Course was in really good shape considering the time of year. Only complaint would be the slow greens, but that is expected this time of year. Some spots were a bit soft (I recall two plugged lies) but for the most part wetness wasnt an issue. Overall it was definitely worth the play.

Everytime I go to lawsonia I make sure to play both courses. I personally love the Woodlands course. It has some terrific and memorable holes. The links gets all the hype (and lives up to it) but the Woodlands is worth ever penny as well. You wont find two courses on the same property that are more different from each other than these two. Play both. You wont regret it.

I’d say it depends on what your options would be for the other course. I’m not saying it’s a bad course, I do enjoy playing it, but for me it’s nowhere near the course that the links is. I think 36 in one day makes sense, but sticking around for another day I would just play the links again. To be honest, when I make my day trips to Lawsonia now I just play the Links twice if the tee sheet allows...What radius would you be looking at in terms of a second course? And would you be driving back in a certain direction from Lawsonia?

Well, I am going to play 1 of the Sand Valley courses in late April/May. First warm day I am going to take a "sick" day and drive up and play whichever I can. So the other option would be whichever I didn't play this spring, which I am hoping I play Mammoth Dunes.

I know the courses at SV are a different level than Woodlands. Just wondering if the convenience of staying in 1 place offsets that or if it is just a no brainer go to SV.

How are the courses in Central Wisconsin coming out of winter? Has the snow melted yet or are some still dealing with snow pack?

As others have said the Woodlands is a very nice course with some of the more memorable holes you'll find in all of Wisconsin. But, the Links is on a whole different plane of awesomeness. I'm a member and my ratio is for every 1 time I play the Woods I play 9 rounds on the Links. If you haven't played tghe Links you're going to wish you played it twice. So many things to learn about the course the first go around (blind shots, 3 tier fast greens) that you'll be itching to take another shot at it with the added knowledge.

@mci711 if you want the convenience of staying in one location then I would play the links twice. As the poster above stated, you begin to see a lot more the more you play it, and id much rather play it twice. But if you’re against playing links twice on the same trip, then I would drive up to SV and play whichever remains. If you’re only playing 18, then it won’t be a bad drive at all. Heck, I drove up to SV once a couple of summers ago after playing 54 at Lawsonia in one day (walking 36...the Links is definitely a course that should be walked if you have the physical capability). Still had plenty of mental energy for my walk at SV the next morning, because the golf was so enjoyable. It sometimes blows my mind that we have so much good golf in this state!

I think this will be the plan.. And I agree, Wisconsin public golf is very great. I kick myself for not taking more advantage of it the past 4 years living in Chicago. The goal was to hit a bunch last summer, it just didn't happen.

I'm a HS golf coach a bit east of Eau Claire. The course director at our host course has told us that he is shooting for April 9th to open up.

We may be close to that in Rice Lake. Forecast looks great!

I walked my first full 18 of the season on Friday and will be out to do it again on Saturday. It felt so awesome to be out and not have to turn your back to a cold wind or think about plugged lies. I'm no gym rat, but I do stay in reasonable shape during the long winter. Yet, after I finished and met my wife for dinner, there was a whole big set of muscles I haven't used in a while that tightened up. I sort of lurched and stuttered my way out of the place like a 90 year old who had spent his day digging ditches.

I played a good number of "vacation" rounds over the long winter, including a week-long trip to Bandon, but the first round of the new year at home is almost a religious experience. Sure, conditions are far from the ideal of late summer, but being out there on a familiar course and knowing that you've got an entire season ahead of you is a wonderful feeling. I got out for a quick 9 after work at Brown Deer and was actually very impressed with how well it played. Good to have the season back here in Wisconsin.

Been out x5 now, 3 at some.of my fav courses;

The Bull, pretty good shape considering there was flooding from the river on #8, just before the bridge to go to the left fwy, and much of the left fwy. #14 in the first portion of the fwy. Good news is those spots really don't come into play much, unless you like the angle from the left fwy better on 8, and #14 maybe if you were playing the tips. #6 had a very small area on the back of the green sanded, no big deal. played it last Tuesday. Path only for riders.

Wash Co. was fairly crunch and dry, less #7, #8, and #17, portions of fwy. Greens were pretty good. Played last Wed.,path only for riders.

Glen Erin played this Sat and it was the best of the three. Actually need some rain. Greens were rolling good. Carts allowed in fwy.

Now, crossing my fingers that we don't get pounded with snow Wednesday thru Thursday in NE Wisco!

45 holes Friday through Sunday. It would have been 54 but I let the rain chase me off after 9 on Sunday. Really surprised and gratified that I hit driver well. It was a struggle club at this stage last year. Irons were good, but dispersion wasn't as tight as it should be and I struggled to have a good feel for yardages. Wedges flat out sucked. Not full shots but anything requiring touch. Putts rolled on their intended line more often than not but I left a lot short. Today is easily the nicest day of 2019 by a mile and it has been conference call He11. Tomorrow.....?

Since we're talking about Deer Haven, here's a New Berlin/Waukesha update:

Deer Haven does have a ball machine that takes credit cards. I think they got all new mats this year, too. Down the street to the west, Tee It Up's FB page says they're opening Memorial Day weekend. They are hinting the clubhouse will be renovated and will have a bar, which I think is a good move by the new owners!

Not a favorable first Initial impression of The Practice Station (the old Preserve at Deer Creek). They turned on the booking engine for simulator times, so I made a reservation for a Saturday morning. When I got to the entrance, the gate was in place. They have since announced they have opened, so I will try again. They are advertising a silver membership for $1,500 which allows unlimited use of the driving range and course, but not the Trackman. $1,500 buys an awful lot of buckets at Tee It Up and Deer Haven, both of which have decent range balls, and it can buy a single membership at some decent area tracks. So, right now, I'm not seeing the value but will visit to learn more.

I spent the winter hitting at Wisconsin Indoor Golf Center, one block west of Hwy 164 on the Hwy 59 Waukesha bypass. Chris, the owner, ran six simulators, and it was really nice. The sims are all fully functional and seem pretty accurate, if my Flightscope MEVO is any indication!

I was at Deer Heaven last night. They have a promo membership/discount card right now for $50. You get: 2 for 1 buckets of balls. Heck, that alone is worth it, but you have to buy the buckets inside.

Also rounds are $10, not $13.

@games how was the indoor center? I was hoping to make it, but Dad life took over.

You could see if Jeff would sell you a few tokens in advance. Got to know him a bit last summer. Seems like a good guy. He might not sell you 10 at a time, but maybe two or three?

Wisconsin Indoor GC is really nice. $32 an hour up to $37 on weekends. But, the sims are accurate, the beer is cold, and it keeps you loose during these stupid 'Sconnie winters, which apparently now extend from October into April. Grr....
