Some Things Wisconsin Golf

Phreddy

Recommended Posts

I have no snow at all in the SE part of Kenosha but my contact at Pets sent me a pic and it appeared a few inches just 5 or 6 miles north and west from me at the course.   Assuming there is a bit more out in the far western part of the county.  Warm weather tomorrow and then hopefully only rain for a few days will allow for a run around the course on Sunday after a frost delay.  I think that is the best I personally can hope for.  My buddy invited me to play down in IL but after ponying up for the membership fee and buying new clubs in the offseason, my out of pocket golf fund is running pretty low right now.  ha ha

Kenosha County courses opened on March 27th but don't think they got much play until maybe Friday.   I was out at Brighton Dale Sunday morning.  One hour frost delay but teed off at 9am and were first on the tee.   I have a membership but it was $25 to walk for my buddy.   Pretty typical early spring conditions.  A few really wet spots but definitely playable out there.  Greens slow as expected.   Saw one idiot drive on the course to use the bathroom in another fairway.  If they can keep people on the cart paths the course looks to have come through the winter pretty well.

Got 4 rounds in thus far.  A bit wet and a bit muddy but definitely playable in SE Wisconsin.   Glad the golf is back.    I should have as many rounds in by Saturday as I had by May 1st last year.

How was Wild Rock? I'll be making a trip to the Dells in June and that looks to be very close to where we're staying.

Conditions were very good for this time of year and by June they will be getting near pristine I would imagine. If you’ve never played the course it is a fantastic play. Great hole variety and awesome green complexes. Certainly the best course in the Dells in my opinion.

Brighton Dale going to 6am tee times starting this weekend I believe.  It has been 8am all spring.   Going to be a chilly one this weekend but both courses in decent shape and the Blue is finally open a few weeks after White since they had a flooding issue between 4 & 5.  The greens have been spiked on Blue but didn't find it that bothersome last weekend.  My guess is the White is likely done as well or will be soon.  A few trees have taken some storm damage and they have continued to remove a few trees from the course.   Also nice that they clear cut under trees and over growth but they never keep up with it during the season and becomes a jungle again by mid summer.

You Wisconsin golfers been getting out?   While certainly playable conditions down here it is still in the 40s when teeing off most weekends.  I've had two days out of the 12 that were above 60 degrees so hoping that starts changing by end of month.   I really need to get out to a good driving range but just don't have very many nearby where I live.   Does Midlane still have that range and practice area over there?   I haven't been in a few years and know the course had been sold.

Ive got about 10 rounds under my belt so far this season in a variety of weather conditions. The last couple times it’s gotten as warm as 70! Course conditions have been pretty good to great for this time of year. Most places are still slow on the greens that I’ve played. Notable exception was Washington County who’s greens were actually quite fast.

I went over to a driving range near my house that I assumed had closed but looks like it is either under different ownership or had to change their name.  Used to be Pineway golf but now named  Pine Acres.   I had no idea it would be cash only now so only had $3 in my wallet but that got me about 20 balls or so.  Nice place to hit balls but no short game or putting areas.

Live on lawsonia. The greens on the links should be perfect. They punched them roughly 3 weeks ago, played last weekend and other than holes 5-9 they were pure. I’ll be out walking the links at 6:45am.

100%. The woodlands has a totally different feel and layout. It’s the polar opposite but if you’re going to be there I think it’s certainly worth playing.

Do they punch the greens at Lawsonia again in the Fall?  If so do you know roughly when? We are due there about Sept 14.

I can check! I don’t think they bunch them that early if memory serves me correctly.

If you believe your life won't be complete without a round of golf at Oakmont, Milwaukee Country Club, Ozaukee CC or with a Steve Stricker autographed Ryder Cup hat the First Tee of SE Wisconsin is auctioning off those items and more.

I drove up to Beaver Dam this morning from Elkhorn to play Old Hickory. I'd only played it once before on a tip from Ode but really liked the course and definitely wanted to get back. I immediately remembered why I love that layout. It's old but unlike some of it's other 1920's contemporaries, I don't feel hemmed in by the tree line. It also has outstanding greens (playing behind the green roller had them feeling even firmer than the 10 they seem to generally run at), a great variety of par 4's, scoreable 5's, and every 3 is a different club off the tee. I have fun at bomb and gouge places like Broadlands but having every par 3 play the same distance gets old. Also, eating up the short par 4's certainly helped my score and general attitude towards the course. I had five birdies (4, 8, 13, 15, and 16) along with 4 bogies (9, 11, 12, and 17) for a 71. Will be back in about a week and a half for more.

Old Hickory

It really is a fun course to play.  I have only been over once this year, but I'll try and get down a handful of times per year and be first off for fresh cut greens and 🤞 they are rolling em that morning as that is an added bonus.  Its a test to see where my iron game is with the elevation change and perched greens - 1, 5, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 18.  It's not like a great shot is required as the greens are typically generous, but misses on those holes can be tough up and ins.  I never score great on that course but never bad either as it is not overly tight off the tee!

can't wait to get back.....and good shooting!

Anybody been to Lawsonia lately? Have a tee time the 17th on the Woodlands and the 18th on the Links

Safe to assume hard and dry like the rest of the state?

Yeah. The woodlands is pretty soft for the weather we've had, they tend to water the course a fair amount. The links is very firm in certain areas however the greens still hold well and aren't terribly quick, they can't turn it up too much due to the amount of play and length of time it would take for most golfers if they got it up to tournament conditions.
