Favorite Muni course in N.E.

As the thread on the GD Best places to play is going, what are your choices for best muni courses in N.E. These have to be City owned courses.

My top 2 are:

Gannon GC-Lynn- This a super fun course to play, the definition of old school N.E. tree lined course with small greens and moderately tight fairways. The course gets 40k rounds a year and is in VERY good shape considering. Weekdays you can walk it for under $40.00 so the quality of the course AND value make it a fantastic choice. Getting a tee time on the weekend is a bear because the members have rights to them all before 2-3pm

The Meadows-Peabody: I really like this course, it's one you HAVE to play it 2-3 times to learn the nuances as playing it for the 1st time with no knowledge can be frustrating as hell. It's SUPER hard to walk 18, you can do the front 9 easily but that back 9 is a tough one! I think with the limited # of true 18 hole courses on the North Shore, that could be part of my opinion.

I'm mainly joking. I've just hit a lot of what I thought were real good approach shots into that green, only to get to the top of the hill and not able to find my ball anywhere.

(think it's 4 with the huge uphill approach shot)

I agree, I HATE that hole! The next one going down the hill is a PITA for me, I always seem to loose my ball when I hit it straight. I can't tell where it lands. Last fall I actually hit it in the middle of the fairway and found it then proceeded to make bogey #FML

How is the Meadows condition wise?

I played it last year and it was a total dump, and they hadn't bothered to change the pins or cut the greens from the night before and they were all a spiked up mess.

wow, that sucks to hear. I don't think I made it there last year and haven't been this year. I remember it being in pretty good shape though - keeping in mind it's a muni.

Green Hill in Worcester is pretty good, usually in good shape, very fast greens and can be tough depending on the pin positions. Triggs in Providence has a great layout, but isn't well run.

Agreed. Simple but challenging course that bites you with the uneven lies, thick rough and very fast greens. Par 5s are all short but always play tough. Great people run the course. They are modifying the back nine to get in a driving range so it will be interesting to see how it changes.

I played in Sept and played 27 holes (replay rate is cart fee only), the course was in GREAT shape. I have played there 12-14 times and never had an issue with conditions.

I have to agree with you about Gannon. My second vote is Dennis Pines on Cape Cod.

My disclaimer is I haven't played George Wright since they did all the work on it. That could bump Gannon.

The Meadows is a fun track. I walked it the first time I played it and won't be doing that again. I played Braintree last week and was really surprised at how nice it was, the greens were in great shape. Wintonbury Hills down in CT is another great muni, tough to beat for the price.

I played Braintree, once, back in 92ish, when I first started playing. It struck me how very different the two nines were.

Braintree is a nice track, not a lot of level fairways or greens the

No love for Mt. Hood?

The hood was a one and done for me. and I lived 5 minutes from it for 4 years...

Why didn't you like it. I live 5 min from George wright and played it one and done last year. Doesn't make it a poor course? Just curious.

Honestly, can't remember a thing about the course, or what in particular I wasn't a fan of. If thier rates were more muni like, I'd be more apt to give it another shot.

My best guess is lots of blind shots, never a fan.

Norwich Golf Course in Norwich CT. Best unknown course in NE by far.

I don't mean any disrespect but is Norwich really that good??

If so, I gotta check it out soon!

I looked at their website and to be honest, it's pretty terrible.

They repeat the same 2 paragraphs of information for both the "course" tab and "about us" tab.

Any updates on George Wright? My fiancé has an interview for a grad program at BC and it looks like I'll have a few hours to kill. Looking for the best public within a reasonable distance to Boston College. Looks like George Wright is about 20 minutes away.

It's in good shape right now. When are you going to be in town?

Norwich is not that good, many better munis in CT. Norwich was claiming to be a Donald Ross design, since debunked. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being Bethpage Black, Norwich is a weak 3.

For CT Munis best to worst

Wintonbury Hills (Only Pete Dye course for miles) Keney Park since rebuild

Rockledge, Timberlin, Tashua Knolls, Simsbury Farms - very well run courses, nice layouts (mostly Cornish designs)

Richter Park - great views around the reservoir, very scenic, some goofy holes, overpriced for out of towners
