PGA Championship to be on BBC

"Well here's a player who's new to me" Peter Alliss said last night and it was Wesley Bryan!! I know the guy is fairly new on tour but a little brushing up on the PGA tour season would reveal to old Pete that he is a winner this year on tour and came close on a couple of other occasions. Ignorance! I am a Sky subscriber but was happy to think that the Beeb would be showing free to air coverage, sadly it has been woeful. You kind of think the presenters are sat in Philip Schofield's old broom cupboard!

I wish they were. Gordon the Gopher would do a much better job than most of the BBC pundits.

The coverage from the BBC has been a disgrace. Irrespective of winning the rights at the last minute, they shouldn't have bid if they didn't have some sort of package ready.

As it is we've had 90 year old Peter Allis mumbling on about "Bruce Koepka" and "Rocky Fowler." Every time camera cuts to another shot the commentators seem surprised.

What's worse is Mark Crossfield's bitter Twitter rant about how this coverage is growing the game. He's the worst when he doesn't get his way, obviously still gutted sky haven't asked him to guest on their coverage but his one man crusade is a bit sad.

Yes the folks on sky talk rubbish but they do it convincingly. Anyone watching the BBC coverage for the first time will likely avoid golf for the rest of eternity.

Let's be fair, today Peter would probably say "here's a player new to me" about Paul Way and Ken Brown.

Shout of the day so far was from Ken Brown - Justin Thomas is on screen and he says "Jordan Spieth...oh no, Justin Thomas" then he and his co-commentator agree that Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth look the same!

Funny I was watching tonight with some old friends who are absolute golf nuts and they said exactly the same thing!

One thing the BBC coverage has in its favour over Sky is that you actually get to watch some golf. I get so frustrated with Sky in that they tend to only show only the top five playing or someone down the field holing a thirty footer for bogey. The amount of time wasted in the Sky Cart or listening to Butch talking rubbish in the studio when there are actual golf shots being played out on the course just flat out annoys me and I switch off. Thinking about it, the only tournaments I typically watch these days are the Masters and the Open which is much the same as I watched when I started playing 35 years ago.

Fair point about golf shots. I am disappointed when we get them and the commentators don't know who's shot it is, what clubs being used or what to say when they hit it.

I hope you were back for the point where GDL's front nine with two bogeys and one birdie was described as being a level par front nine!

My watching habits are probably different to yours as I generally watch with the sound muted...habit I formed after watching golf on Sky for a few months. I can just about take Ewen Murray and Tony Johnstone (and Radar on the course) but that is my limit.

So reading a bit of background about the BBC deal, it appears that Sky didn't want to pay the PGA of America the amount of money it was asking for and pulled out at the last minute. If the BBC hadn't stepped in, the UK would have had no coverage at all. The footage shown is what the PGA allow to be shown and the BBC didn't have any time to prepare.

The shambles is all down to the PGA and we should be thanking the Beeb for at least giving us some golf to watch this weekend!

I think it was good of the BBC to remind viewers how to deal with grass that they'll never play, for those who may have missed how to deal with grass they'll never play the first time round.

In the space of two minutes, the BBC went from horrendously bad and the worst coverage I could ever imagine over the last three days to actually making the last three days look good.

Still, there will be people who think that because it is free it is good.
