Florida Courses - Post Irma Conditions

Recommended Posts

I think it would be good if we post all conditions here.

I'm up in The Villages right now as I decided to ride the storm out over here. It's going to be a while before the courses here get going again. The water levels in the retention ponds are extremely high or overflowing. I will check out some of the Space Coast courses and get a hold of some of my contacts in Orlando and see what those courses are doing.

Richie,

Any word on how the courses in and around Orlando made out. Also Haines City (Southern Dunes)

Thanks!

Haven't heard, yet.

I am still in The Villages and have no plans on leaving until my power back home comes back on.

I was told that Juliette Falls was open today and wasn't hurt too bad.

The Villages courses are close thru Monday. We drove around and the courses in The Villages...some were not bad...some are completely under water. What I've seen that has surprised me is the number of uprooted trees.

Any word on Streamsong would be appreciated. Headed there in 10days...or maybe not.

Website was down yesterday and earlier day...but is now back up. May call them tomorrow.

Following this. Heading there in December, but would love to know how they came out of the storm.

To our dear friends and fans of Streamsong,

We greatly appreciate the many kind words and concerns extended to Streamsong. Our hearts go out to our neighbors, friends, and colleagues in the Caribbean and throughout Florida as we all do our best to recover from this significant weather event. Fortunately, Streamsong is just fine. We want to assure you that we are fully operational as our staff prepares for a busy arrival day on Thursday of this week to welcome group guests and buddy golf trips from Florida and throughout the country. Streamsong Blue and Streamsong Red are in great shape and the grand opening of our highly anticipated third course, Streamsong Black is on schedule and will debut to the world on September 29 for public play. Our Reservations Specialists are actively booking tee times and buddy golf getaways and ready to answer any additional questions that you may have. Please contact 888.294.6322.

It doesn't surprise me that Streamsong is good to go. Basically no trees around there. Last year I played there and a huge storm came around that delayed our round and it drains very well.

Rio Pinar only has the front nine open and the range open.

I don't really know what it would take to put Streamsong in a bad spot - there are basically no trees, the buildings are all super-stout concrete monoliths, the soil drains incredibly well, and it's on relatively high ground (vs. everything else around it).

Celebration Golf Club is open and appears to have only had minimal damage which is surprising given that Kissimmee was pretty hard hit. I know that Victoria Hills is open, not sure what the damage level is like.

Hello from Naples!!

We took a direct hit for sure. Southern portions of Naples seemed to have fared much better then Northern sections of Naples. Irma stalled or slowed to an absolute crawl midway through Naples for about 2 1/2 hours. No one is really talking about this however I have screen shots of the radar about 1 to 2 miles from where I was starting at 2:45 and the eye finally passed over at 5:17, have video.

Tiburon, Pelican Marsh, Imperial, Mediterra, Talis Park took the brunt of the storm. Twin Eagles is already back open and most of the courses to the east of I75 are either open or close to opening. Bonita Bay West I believe has a course open, 1 of 3. Some courses may have been able to open sooner but no power is an issue as is contaminated drinking water.

Tiburon is beat up pretty good! Oddly the Publix across the street to the due south has no tree damage, literally like 50 yards away. Tiburon is set to open the 19th and Imperial's West course on the 25th. Imperial East may be closed for awhile. Trees down like match sticks!

Most of Pelcian Marsh's trees along US 41 were laying on 41! Entire right lane blocked and most of center lane. Haven't heard a date for them to open.

As of this morning 70,000+ people are still without power, under a boil water notice and curfews are still in effect.

Bay Hill lost a bunch of trees on the back nine. West Orlando got hit pretty good by a microburst.

IIRC the back nine should open back up mid-week this week. We will see what they do about replacing the trees. Luckily nothing too 'game changing'. A tree that fell on #16 will allow people to make a nice bunker shot down the fairway, and a few trees lost that seperate #16 fairway from #18 tee box will be interesting as now sliced balls can enter #18 easily.

We'll see.

Orange County National in Orlando opened up soon after as well with virtually no damage less a few trees, but the Panther Lake course is closed right now due to aeration; not the hurricane IIRC.

I played PGA GC's Dye course Sunday afternoon and it was doing great. My guess is that the Wanamaker and St. Lucie Trails courses might be a little wetter, but ought to be just fine very soon if they're not already.

Not that you ever want strong hurricanes to happen, and not that this terribly important compared to the real-life problems bad weather causes, but at least as it pertains to rainfall, events like this do serve to separate well-designed and -sited courses from merely mediocre ones.

The most overlooked aspect of golf course architecture is that it's an exercise in creative drainage. The architect who diverts water away from the in-play areas has usually done a very good job on the rest of the course. Certainly there are going to be some exceptions, but I would venture that the best courses in a given area tend to be among the first to reopen after a significant rainfall event like we've had here in FL.
