Link was also shared on other Hive social media accounts however wanted to discuss how FAR from the course Tiger Woods is docking the yacht during the US Open. Why would he want an hour drive without traffic getting to and from the course? The doesn't make sense to me. There either has to be marinas closer to the course (maybe for not that big of a yacht) or a house he can rent and completely renovate to his liking for the week.

I've been watching David Duval videos all night. I've got a new appreciation for him. I wasn't watching or playing much when he was good.

Wayne DeFrancesco has a funny story where he was going out with oMeara, Calc, and ??? one day for practice and Tiger walked up and goes "what do you guys have going on?" and Calc looked at Wayne and goes "sorry buddy."

He said Duval had another gear and on this 600 yard par 5, John cook says to wayne "watch this" and Duval hit one 330, then hit a 2 iron from 270 over the back.

Damn, I had no idea that Royal New Kent closed late last year after falling into really bad shape and the old owner left it to go completely dormant 6 months ago. Just saw that a new owner bought the place - same company that owns Viniterra - and is going to put $2M into it. New opening is spring of next year.

Damn shame, that is a really great design.

Got out last night for a few quick holes and some range time. Was so nice out, hope everyone else was able to enjoy it.

=====

Royal New Kent was shuttered toward the end of 2017, as it and sister clubs Brickshire and Stonehouse were put up for sale by their shared owner, Traditional Golf Properties.

Stonehouse shut down around the same time and remains closed. Brickshire, which has remained open, was purchased in March by its surrounding homeowners association for $2 million.

Traditional Golf has owned Royal New Kent and Stonehouse since 2001. It paid $5 million for each course that year, according to county real estate records. It has owned Brickshire since 2010, paying $425,000 for the course.

To bring Royal New Kent back to life, Tuck said Wingfield plans to redo the bunkers, which includes the purchase of 1,500 tons of sand. It also will convert the greens from bent grass to champion Bermuda grass, along with upgrades to the irrigation system, pump station and clubhouse.

But it won’t be an easy task, Tuck said.

“It is a disaster,” he said. “I’ve been around golf a long time. You see courses where the grass goes to hell. But things that were fixed (at Royal New Kent) were fixed incorrectly and rigged. The drainage system out there is a disaster. All that will be taken up and replaced.”

Tuck said Wingfield will look to restore Royal New Kent more in line with its original design from 1996. It was designed by the late Mike Strantz, a course architect who designed only seven or eight courses before his death at age 50.

That's interesting, DC.

I have never played RNK but we get to Richmond from time to time so I was always going to. Still will someday.

I didn't know you could buy a golf course for $425,000. I could swing that. I've thought about buying Gunpowder but I figured even that would cost a few mil, easy.

So someone posted a link to THIS GUY looking for a playing partner at Dormie a couple weeks ago.

I thought his story looked pretty interesting and he said he was going to be in Maryland during June, so we invited him to play in the Summer Solstice event.

Not sure if he'll do it, but if he does, that might be cool. Give the club a little pub.

BTW, looks like this guy is in.

You know, I tried to listen to a pod that guy was on, just could not follow along with him for too long. Seemed like an fun concept I just couldnt plow through the whole thing. Last night I tried to listen to the last Fried Egg pod with Eamon Lynch, sounded like they recorded it with tin cans and string. Not sure how some of these more longer tenured podcasts havent cracked the good-audio code by now.

I was walking Greendale the other night and thought about how great a track that could be if you could bring in a big name guy like Gil Hanse to complete redesign it into say a really cool 12 hole layout.

I grew up playing and learning the game from my Step-Dad. This article struck a cord...

http://www.golfwrx.c..._content=unused

"But as happens, Dad, who is approaching 80, is diminishing significantly. Both in his golf game and his physical and mental faculties. He asked me not too long ago if he’d ever been to my house."

Plot twist. His dad is Barney Adams.

Kidding aside, I'm actually right there with him. My dad is almost definitely never playing again. I don't like to dwell on it.

Yeah, I think the most golfy idea for Gunpowder would be to make it 12 or 14. Rip out the cart paths. Cut down about 50,000 trees. Sell cheeseburgers for $3. Lose money. Die broke and alone.

Nothing goofy about that. Build a 12 hole course that allows for two 6 hole loops too. Or even a 12 hole reversable course.

BTW I finally went back and read the redesign plan for East Potomac. The discussion/maps of how the original course was reversable was fascinating. Really interesting to read how they try to design bunkers in those case.

Took delivery of this last night, the book is so old/not popular that they didnt even make a kindle version out of it. Cant remember the last time I bought a book-book:

"golfy" not "goofy".

I've read that MacKenzie book, years ago. I think that's the book where he has a list of rules for "good golf holes". I remember parts of it being dry, but overall rather good.

Sounds partially like a Dan Snyder plan with the trees.

My gunpowder has no yardage markings. Not even on the scorecard. There's going to be a sign up in Ye Old Golf Shoppe that says, "You're free to do what you want, but we recommend you leave yardage measuring devices behind."

Sadly I wonder what Greendale would actually sell for if they sold it off. Given the location and how much developers would jump all over it, I think it would/might have to be into the 8 figures on land alone.

Yeah, that's the thing with Gpow, too. Pretty primo land. They've built around it in the last 10 years.

Amen. I didn't grow up playing with my dad, as he took a decade away from the game when I was 5-15, and I never really started playing a lot until I had moved away from home. But when I picked it up in my mid 20s, he had started playing again. Since then, we have probably played 150 rounds together.

Most of my most memorable rounds have been with my Dad. Just him and me, usually an off season partial round on an empty course he belongs to on Cape Cod with a collection of different loops you can play-- 4 holes, 6 holes, 7 holes, 9, 12 or 18. We are also blessed to have been able to play amazing places like Ireland (2x), Streamsong, Whistling Straits, Pine Needles/MidPines and a bunch of awesome private courses in the Northeast that has friends at.

Fortunately, he is still playing (had his second ace last month at 76). I try not to think about a future where we can't play together.

Willow springs was for sale this time last year for $2.5m and included a new clubhouse. Not sure if it ever sold or not but it is still open.

Still for sale, 2.8m. Pool our funds for a Hive east coast version of Sweetens Cove?

I don't want their clubhouse if I'm buying Willow Springs. I want MY clubhouse. Seems weird. Am I crazy that 2.8 million sounds kind of cheap? That's a pretty good location.

Looking at this made me check out Cross Creek Golf Club. When you google it says 'Permanently Closed' but the web site says under renovation. A lot of prime real estate there.
