MD/DC/VA Golfers - This One Goes to Eleven

Hey guys, I don't know if this is the place to post or ask, but I am traveling up to the DC area at the end of next week for 5 days and am looking to play golf. I currently work at a ClubCorp course in Florida so I was looking to play one, possibly two courses in the area. How would you rank River Creek Club, Piedmont, Norbeck Country Club, and Chantilly National amongst the four of them? I've never been to DC before so I would like anyone's input if possible. Thank you!

I've played them all (was a member at Piedmont and then Norbeck, now just clubcorp travel).

I'd rank them in this order: Norbeck, Piedmont, Chantilly, River Creek.

Norbeck is an old parkland course with good elevation changes.

Piedmont is a decent layout but it's completely routed through neighborhoods, if that's something you care about. I liked the course there a lot.

Chantilly is similar to norbeck but it's very flat.

River Creek has two holes where you tee off with 5 iron to avoid a hazard. That annoyed me. There are a couple holes where you get out of the houses though.

It's more about where you're going to be staying. Piedmont and river Creek are an hour from the city. Norbeck and chantilly aren't much closer, drive time wise.

baddomes was a ClubCorp guy til recently, and played two of those regularly. edit: he replied while I was typing.

Ive played Norbeck a bit and its a good course. Kind of old school parkland course. I like it, but I wouldn't make it the one course you play unless the discount is just that good. There are a few public places nearby that I prefer.

What's with Dufner's pre-shot routine and his hand on his knee?

I actually know the answer to this. You wanna know how? Twitter.

Its the same thing Charley Hoff is doing as they are working with the same coach. They are touching a point on their leg/knee to level out their shoulders and get a consistent setup each putt.

Also hit some teed up wedges into par 3's yesterday.

Why?

get ready for solstice. Pretty rare to have a 110 shot in on a par 3. Easy to get way too much juice on a shot like that, especially when they're severely downhill. . .hit a couple hard GW's with jazz, hit a couple soft PW's that sat. Tried to get a feel for how the Srixon reacted compared to a prov. Short 3's become birdie ops.

Completely irrelevant sign of the times to make our old guys feel older: I just got a new credit card (yet another credit card batch stolen from some vendor I guess), and it does not have any embossed numbers on the front of the card. It's no longer just stupid, it's now impossible to run a card using one of those old school carbon paper machines.

"the knuckle buster" they used to call it in the "biz". TheCityDame had one.

Supposedly the person who invented "square" (that thing you plug into your phone to swipe a card) was friends with a craft show person and wanted to invent a better way to take cards.

After the knuckle busters, wife had to buy this thing that looked like an adding machine. It connected to satellites or something. It was like $1000 with a monthly rental fee, and she had CC fees on top of that. Square was an awesome invention.

I usually don't tee up on short one-bangers. Just doesn't jive with the way I try to strike higher lofted clubs.

Sometimes I don't tee up when I'm in between clubs on a par 3.

the guy I played with in the qual (who was good) would build a little grass tee on par 3's by banging his club into the ground a little.

I don't get too much spin on wedges from the turf, but I do from a tee.

Also, I don't trust my contact on wedges enough not to tee one up on par 3s.

I consider wedge contact the biggest weak spot in my game.

Interesting, its been a few years since I had a card with raised numbers. Amex hasnt had them in a long time (laser cut on the back) and my two credit unions both ditched them a while ago for printed on numbers.

Would you agree that you're probably just a bit too shallow with wedges? I haven't watched much of it yet, but I actually bought the strike plan recently out of curiosity. He's probably got stuff about lowering the arc. I think an interesting CityGame Approved thing to try would be finding a nice downhill slope at the TV practice hole, and practice hitting wedges from there.

That's something I need to work on somewhere at some point. Last time I played, I forget who I was talking to (maybe HBD?), but we decided that hitting shots on downhill slopes is crazy difficult. I'm really just terrible at it

yes, I think I'm too shallow with wedges. My shallowicity is probably why my contact on longer irons is better than average, and contact on short irons is lower than average.

Thing is. . .it's one of those things where on the range, give me 2 swings and I groove it and then just center face irons all day. If you came out to the range, you'd be like, "what's the problem". The problem is that you need to do it 1 time, on the course, off a tight, wet lie.

Yes it was me. The conversation was triggered by the 9th hole at Worthington Manor. We all MASHED our drives and had mid to short irons in. We were all discussing how difficult it was gonna be to clip it from the downhill lie we had. As I was addressing the ball with my 9i the discussion caused me to change my ball position and swing a tad and I ended up blocking it into the bunker. From eagle opp to grinding for par in an instant.

I'd hate to see Duf's stroke if his set-up got INconsistent. My goodness. Lol

It's probably better to switch clubs for every single shot in practice sessions. It's not like you get 2-3 chances consecutively with the same club when you're on the course. I don't even know if practicing that way is "a thing" but it should be.

It is a thing. It's probably an underused thing. People want to go work on their swing on the range. I find it more helpful to work on shots on the range. Not always, but mostly.

I think there's something to be said for grooving a move and repeating it, but that shouldn't be confused with your ability to do that on the course (I believe this is the main source of "why can't I bring my range game to the course" complaints). That's just an idealized version of what you're trying to do.
