PXG's new ad

So I stumbled across a new PXG ad featuring Paige. Now first off, good for her but I don't get it and this isn't about her or directly.

 

If you were one of their LPGA pros would this annoy you? I just ask because it would me. Not because of her insta-fame but more about what they have accomplished. My first thought was "what a slap in the face to their established pros. Am I the only one that sees it that way?

I just saw the TV commercial during Golf Central just now. It's terrible. Black and white and she hits a Driver and then says "I gained 15 yards!"

 

I get the appeal of having someone like her as a Brand Spokesperson, but yes, I think that accomplished Pros are steaming. Just like they were steaming when she got the three sponsors's exemptions to play internationally and didn't make a dent.

 

There is no question she can play Golf, and that she is beautiful. She has elevated herself based on her own Social Media know how, which is amazing. Good for her. She is self made, which is not easy. I wish her the best of luck.

Is this any different than having Hank Haney or Butch Harmon as a spokesperson? Neither have had much success on the course as far as I'm aware. Do the PGA players begrudge them for earning a few $$$'s on the side?

The Kardashians aren't trying to sell over priced Golf Clubs. The World of Golf is a little more fickle then The Entertainment Network.

Of course folks are likely not going to purchase the clubs because she is gorgeous. But some will take a look. Which is the point of marketing. Getting eyeballs on the product. Not all ads lead directly to sales. But if effective they do get folks to talk about and think about the product.

 

Compare it to other ads. You may not be in the market for a new car. But the new Kia Stinger ads catch you eye. In a couple years you do need a car and the little synapses in your brain will remind you you liked that Kia model and you may check it out. That is also the point of marketing.

Here are some of my assumptions. They may be totally off. You decide. I don't know anything for certain. Neither do you. So let's start there. I am presenting my opinion. If you disagree, that's okay.

 

#1) They are paying Paige much less than it would have cost them to sponsor another Tour Pro. One of the reasons they chose that route for sure.

 

#2) She has a lot of appeal and knows how to market herself. Clearly. Does that always translate to another market? No. I don't think it does.

 

#3) The Owner of PXG has said his clubs are a "Lifestyle" Brand. Most people that can afford that kind of thing don't even ask what the price is for the product. *Most* of the people who follow Paige on Instagram and YouTube do not fall into that demographic. In fact most Instagramers are Females between the ages of 25-35. You can look up the numbers if you like.

 

#4) Other than winning once on the Cactus Tour, I personally do not consider Paige a Professional Golfer. She certainly can play much better than me, but she is not an LPGA Pro. Brand exposure seems to work for the bigger companies by having their Product front and center on the Tour.

 

#5) Regardless of how much you pay a Spokesperson, the intention of having a Spokesperson is to expand your reach. I don't know what the goals of the company are, but generally you should triple your investment before breaking even. The salary you pay the spokesperson is only a part of the equation. How far does her reach expand to the "Lifestyle" people?

I never said she was a professional golfer. I view her as a model that plays golf. Thousands of companies use models as spokespersons. Sex sells. Advertising 101. I don't think their target market knows, or cares that's she's an internet star. They are clearly not marketing her followers.

 

PXG already has a sizeable presence on the LPGA Tour. 'Not sure signing another player gains them additional eyeballs.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read that that's one of the reasons they chose her. Because of her internet stardom. Ultimately, I wish her all the luck in the world.

I don't doubt it, but that doesn't mean that they're automatically trying to attract her existing fan base as customers. I see it more as someone with a proven track record. If she can build a loyal following from scratch, imagine what she can do with a good marketing department behind her.

Which reminds me of a funny story. Playing golf in AZ and I slice my drive into a bush. I'm digging in the bush and find my ball when a guy comes from the other fairway and asks if that's his Titleist, it takes me a few seconds to realize its Alice Cooper. I said no its my Top Flite to which he replied "Can I see it?" Seems Mr. Cooper has trust issues.

Let the players be the star of the show not the owner of the company especially when he produces used car sales level commercials.
