Help! Need a Source for Whipping

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this topic has been covered many times over, but I can't find a definitive answer. I just want to hear everyone's opinion and the sources that you all use. I'm talking about whipping for wooden headed clubs 1950's up until modern clubs. I always used the common waxy, shiny looking nylon whipping that you found on most golf clubs in the 70s and 80s. Ordered it from Hornungs, Golfworks or Golfsmith back then. That's what I learned to whip clubs with and that's what I'm looking for now...or as close to it as possible.

If I buy "bonded nylon thread" which can be found all over ebay for pretty cheap, what weight do I need? Does it look like what I described above?

If I order through Ashaway, who makes tons of different stuff, exactly which of their products am I looking for? Again, what looks most like what I described?

Is there someone out there I am missing as a source???

Where and what is your best source for golf club whipping?

I get mine from a place called Royalwood, Ltd.(Not sure if I can post a link to them on here, but it's easy enough to find online). It's only an hour away from me and close to where my sister lives, so I just go get it myself. They should have shipping though. Irish 4-ply waxed linen thread in any color that you could possibly want. 50-gram spools, about 90-100 yards.

Bought waxed linen thread at the following. The finished look was coarser than what I was after, but high quality.

http://hickorygolfworkshop.com/thread-head-covers.html

Found this equal to the above for my purposes and a whole lot cheaper. Slightly thinner diameter IMO. Worth a try to see if its the look you're after.

Rod guide whipping thread will give you a very fine look. But not waxed.

Ask any legitimate PGA Pro over 65 years old as they would be your best source for answers to your questions or could point you to someone who knows.

In their day, everyone on the golf staff had to learn and know how to rewhip and refinish.

Thanks gang. I'm a 51 year old former PGA Professional and know how to get the job done, I just can't find a source for whipping. Getting tired of picking up junk clubs for $1 at the thrift store just so I can steal the whipping and possibly save a grip or shaft to reuse :)

Yeah...that would do in a pinch. But I want something a little more finished looking and not so rustic. I really want to find something where you don't see the braid as much. Am I being too picky?

So, Michaels' has the same kind of stuff I bought at Jo Ann. The MIchaels' store is a couple miles away, versus the Jo Ann which is about 10.

Thanks for the info.

I recalled some of these guys used fine nylon line ( black) in a jam when the traditional whipping was not available. I believe one of my driver was repaired that way when the whipping came loose at the driving range that day, a friend just took it in the back a whipped it with nylon line ( or something not waxed linen ) Think it held up well.

Here's a link to a post I made about a year ago which links to a source for whipping for the OP (scroll down a bit) and also some how-to videos for sdrandea:

Here's a pic of what they look like installed on a MacGregor project I call "St Paddy's":

Just another great set I bought from Teevons. Thanks again, Tim.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

My info duplicates that of JoeGruen.

From the late 1960s onward, most of pro shops I saw used nylon fishing line to re-whip the persimmon woods.

I love the different color, a project I have yet to tackle is the Hogan womens color scheme for their woods for women in the late 60' early 70's I think there were 8 different colors for the ladies woods. I have collected I think all the women's sets I need, Just need to take the time to do the job. Would look real cool displayed. I have a colored ad/ picture somewhere

Hi,

Original whipping thread then try "Stewarts pitched thread" from Diamond Golf, Arundel, England toll free from USA 844-552-3437,

Aprox $30 for 500 metres, original waxed thread used in the days of hickory clubs and persimmon. Do not use fishing whipping thread as its smaller in diameter and should be coated with a resin/varnish sealer as its not waterproof.

regards,

Bob

I had emailed the Ashaway Line and Twine company on the matter, and got this from them:

Hello James,

Yes, Ashaway makes the 20-A- 4 black golf whipping. The minimum order is $100. This is 2 x 1500 yard spools @ $50/spool. Please call me at 800-556-7260 with a Visa or MC if you would like to place an order.

Sincerely Yours,

Steve Crandall

But since I did not proceed to order from them (it was only 2990 yards more than I needed) I cannot speak to the nature of the product, beyond that a string company has a specific product called golf whipping twine. I wound up using nylon fishing line...

I used this stuff at 35lb test (in black): https://www.amazon.com/SeaKnight-Monster-Monofilament-Fishing-Material/dp/B01KLW9GN8/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1547069250&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=monofilament%2Bfishing%2Bline%2Bblack&dpPl=1&dpID=516ATVOq66L&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

I would use it only if you can’t find anything else. It’s good and tough nylon, but it’s a little green/translucent and slightly smaller diameter than some of the original stuff. I just wanted something and fast, so I ordered it.

Edit: and I haven’t used the club yet to know how it’ll hold up.

Bigarch, HoldenCornfield:

I re-read my own post and realized that it was more than 8 years ago that I purchased the items that I depicted. From a short Google search it became apparent, that these things are no longer available on the market. I have to apologize for my misleading contribution. However, I have some whipping - cord surplus left, but not too much. If anyone of you over here in Europe is in dire need for one or two clubs short term, just p.m. me. I will help you out.

Best regards, Joe

Took the tip from JoeGruen last year and found vinyl bead cord at Hobby Lobby. They also have a waxed looking version Been using it ever since. Very easy to work with and it does look authentic. It can stretch or break if you get a little too aggressive with it, but I haven't found anything better that's readily available and affordable.
