PING replacement I200/G700

Recommended Posts

Do we know if these are hollow or filled with material?

The rep I spoke to said they were hollow. I'm hoping the sound and feel is not the same as G700.

These being forged vs the G700 being c300 steel, the sound and feel should more comparable to that of a PXG or 790.

Let's all just hope that they are not going to be in the same price range as PXG! I figured eventually PING had to start some line to go head to head with PXG, especially when you know that a few of the people at PXG were originally with Ping.

I think PXG has a great line of irons, but I am not about to spend $400 per club and I certainly hope that PING does not try to compete in that arena.

Ping has been known for quality, but not expensive... I just hope they stick to their roots!

I dont think that will be part of their strategy here.

They would alienate a large part of their target market.

Pricing should be just a little north of the iBlades.

Ping hasn’t been shy about overpricing their products...Rapture stuff all overpriced. Forged Anser product line way overpriced, Even had a putter weight package that would make Titleist proud. And let’s not forget the touched by JAS Anser limited edition for $899. Those still sit gathering dust in many shops. The only really ground by JAS were a few silver finished ones that went to their biggest account owners..

I had both the i500 and i201's in hand yesterday. The i500 are like the TM P790 but less offset and are a hollow head. Rep said they are a club longer than the i201's. Faces are forged on the i500 irons. The forged Glide wedges are beautiful but will run close to $200!!

How do the i200 & i201 compare?

IMHO, the i201's look "cleaner" they are a little softer feeling as well.

I'm looking for some new irons so both of these new irons and the P790's and the G700's really do intrigue me. Still enjoying my CF16's but improved distance control and holding greens would be welcomed here. Looking to get rid of those flyers and gaining some additional spin should do it.

For the record... are the i200 replacement irons called i201's or 210's - I've seen both names used multiple times here ???

Info I have so far says i210. I have not had an in-hand visit from my sales rep though.

Hopefully the only similarity between the G700 and i500 is they are both hollow body designs. If the i500 has the same dead feel and awful sound that the G700 has they won’t sell many. The P790 have a very good feel and sound probably aided by the foam. None of the buyers that have seen all the clubs have been allowed to hit them. Fingers crossed the forged face will negate that cheap sounding click of the G700

I might be totally making this up, but I swear I heard this or read this somewhere (albeit some time ago before the anser forged came to the states).

Ping did a trial with their staffers once, giving them a forged iron and a cast iron. Didn’t tell them the difference, only that one was forged and one wasn’t. Only one player guessed right, Lee Jansen.

They also chromed out some irons and few of the testers automatically assumed they were forged simply because of the chrome finish.

No real point to this, just something I remembered reading. Hopefully someone can corroborate

Heard that from several Ping wrx guys and constant refrain from the reps. Ping has always said they would do a forging if it produced a better club. The Anser wasn’t a better club, rather a way to make inroads in the Asian market. So 5 years later maybe they think they have a better club. The i500 has a forged face not body, so like the drivers. The wedges might be a forged club, but could also have a forged face like the Taylormade wedges with the replaceable faces (that weren’t forged)

anyone know for sure if these are 100% forged or just the face is forged ??

i would hate it if the entire head was forged.

Are the i201 or i500 supposed to be more forgiving? How did the head size of the i500 compare to the p790?

Thanks!!

i500 are supposed to be more forgiving. head size of the i500 is similar in size to that of the P790

Got to see both I500 and I210 in hand saturday. In 7 Iron they both looked identical in terms of size. I was told the I500 will in-between i210 and G400. I'm assuming because of them being hollow and the toe screw the I500 will be a bit more forgiving then the i210.

Just the face is forged.

The reason Ping is not filling these and G700 heads to maximize ball speed. The 790 and pxg may feel better but by filling the heads it limits how much the face will flex and in term reduce the face flexing and decrease ball speed.

Any comments on i200 vs i210? I’ll probably end up pulling the trigger for a set of i200. Just waiting to see what’s different about the i210.

They actually made the cavity a little but cleaner. The elastomer ctp weight goes a little higher in the face to give it a bit softer feel.

Thank you but that is not good news. The sound & feel along with decent spin numbers is what makes the 790/pxg playable. If someone wants max ball speed numbers they would just buy the G7's.

My friend Mike Nicolette was at Ping when they did this and you are exactly right, the tour guys could not tell which was which. I saw the irons that were used and hit a couple on the range at Ping, they were basically chromed S59 heads that did have a forged look. They also had some very similar blades that were forged I think by a company in Taiwan that they used for the test. If the tour guys could tell a positive difference then Ping was going to get into more forged products but when they could not tell one from the other they scraped the idea. It really came down to the sound which was only very slightly different at best, performance was identical and tests on the Ping machine showed the same thing.

I will be interested to hit them to see if the forged face helps with the sound and feel. I'm getting at a 3 iron with my i210's and debating the 4 iron
