Ping Retro Spec - Anyone have info on it?

Very interested in the Retro Spec lofts for the i210 and i500. Curious If offset decreases and what the bounce will be.

Offset decreases significantly and bounce increases an equal amount to the loft weakening. If you weaken 2 degrees you add 2 degrees of bounce. Most people would benefit with more bounce.

I play my irons very close to the “retro specs” in that video. A bit weaker actually.

Old thread, but was curious if anyone has gone with the "retro" lofts in say their G400/410 or 700 irons.

I've been gaming the G700's since they came out. Low ball hitter and sometimes have a hard time holding greens with the 6i.

I only hit my 6i about 160 yds.

Thinking 2* more loft might help me out and also gap a bit better with my 26* 5 hybrid that I game.

Also I understand that adding loft will decrease the amount of offset which I am a fan of. My eye seems to be ok with the amount of offset on the 8i on down in the G700's. But the 6 and 7i look "different" to my eye and sometimes gives me fits with trying to align it to my target properly.

The offset change from weakening lofts is exaggerated by some. Yeah, there is a reduction, but it's just slight. As for weakening the G irons, they have a wide sole with lots of bounce already so you can't go too far. I've bent some of my 410's a degree (for my preferred gapping) but truth is, if you hit the ball too low (like me) weakening the lofts is a bandaid, not a fix.

Does anyone know if PING actually bends them or casts the heads in a 2* weaker loft?

Callaway, for instance, actually has separate heads that are cast/forged at 2* upright or flat and then they bend them further from there. Curious if PING does a similar thing so that offset or bounce doesn’t change with the loft change.

It's been reported a few times here on WRX that Ping bends the lofts to meet both Power Spec and Retro Lofts.

That's a bit different than extra casting/forging work for different lies.  I'd heard rumor of Ping doing that in the days they had their casting operation in house, considering the extreme lies they offered with 17-4 stainless, but no idea if they are doing that now.  Or if it was even true 20+ years ago, for that matter.

I don't know. I usually believe what Wishon says most of the time (such as his shaft post and his consistency posts), but the loft thing and the driver adapter thing being useless don't gel with me at all. I know who he is, I know what he's done, and I respect the guy a lot, but I think he's dead wrong on these two things. I've seen it with my own eyes in fittings, taking the exact same golf club, bending it weaker or stronger, and seeing the launch and spin get affected but total carry distance moves like MAYBE 2-3 yards tops. The one exception to this is slower swingers. I've had more success selling "weaker" lofted clubs to slower swingers (like i200) than I do comparably sized, stronger lofted clubs (like Steelhead Pro or Apex or Mizuno 900 Forged). There's merit to it. I did a mock fit to one of the older guys I work with that was jonesing for a new set and he was all hot on some distance-lofted iron, and I threw together an Apex Pro with his shaft of choice and he gained almost a full club in carry despite having a higher launch and spin, which are typically detriments to carry. As for the adapter thing, I'm not going to derail the thread with that.

To the point of the thread, do you think it's possible Shiels just put up what "retro" lofts were so people can see what the difference is? As for all of the distance elitists here, I can't wait to get a set of G700s in Power Spec and hit my 21* 5 iron...woohoo!

So are you saying that a couple of degrees of extra loft for some swingers equates to more distance?

My wife recently received her Ping G Le2 irons in the Retro loft spec that she was fitted into in October.  The fitter suggested the extra loft to help her get better launch, higher peak height, improved landing angle and more carry distance compared to her previous irons.

Don’t understand the mystery on this. The following chart is from the Ping website and shows the difference in specifications for the G425 irons.  If you have trouble reading it in this forum format, just go to the Ping website, it is all clearly published and described there.

NOTES

  • Lie angle is based on Black Color Code at standard length.
  • Power Spec Loft is a fitting option for players looking to boost their iron distance or decrease spin to hit a desired trajectory window. The Power Spec is a custom-designed loft configuration that delivers a power boost in a calculated fashion without sacrificing the integrity of the club’s design.
  • Club bounce angles will vary slightly if ordered with non-standard loft specs.
  • Standard swingweights for graphite-shafted clubs are 1 to 2 points lighter than shown, depending on shaft flex.
  • Achievable swingweights depend on shaft, length and grip combinations.
  • These are design specifications that may vary due to manufacturing tolerances.
  • Available in left- and right-handed models.
