Let's call a spade a spade, he's a cheater. For fun is one thing. I don't play for fun. I play with a lot of old timers and they play legit even from the reds. I'm coming from cheaters in baseball leagues with shaved bats, it's not right. Play your game with legal clubs in your hands.

 

Nothing wrong with calling out cheaters. Have a great weekend guys.

Have to agree with this. Play a member guest tournament every year and my partner for the first few seasons was the oldest active member the course had. He was 86 when he passed away and played up until the day he left this earth. He played the front tees and would hit his drive no more than 130 yards in the fairway. He was the best playing partner for a tournament I have ever had.

 

Even the other members had a saying for him after he hit his tee shot. It was, "Hey diddle diddle, Bill's down the middle."

 

Just because you get old, doesn't mean you have to start cheating to continue to enjoy the game.

 

The OP never asked whether what he was doing was considered illegal or not. Nor did said he was playing in a member guest tournament. If he was the yes it would be cheating but if he is out there by himself or with friends playing casually then it is not cheating. I would wager if you called a member of the USGA Rules Committee, they would say the same thing.

 

While there is a time and place for everybody's opinion. The OP never asked nor deserved to hear any opinions on whether or not he is cheating.

 

This is a forum isn't it? I believe everyone is subject to opinions on a public message board, if they ask for it or not. I don't remember asking for your opinion on my post.

 

You have your opinions and I have mine. Even though he might not be playing any tournaments or events, it is still cheating.

 

I guess instead of having opinions we should all just sit together around a camp fire singing kumbaya holding hands.

In regards to all the other 'stuff'. Meh.

 

I play wedges from 2001. They have non-conforming grooves. They're hand ground, etched with maple leafs and look bad arse. Play 95% of my rounds as a single at first light. Never once entered a tournament or played in big money matches. If someone wants to label me a cheat then so be it. In the 5% of rounds that I tee it up with others I'd rather play the the 'cheat' than then 'integrity police.'

I play many single rounds too and get paired with all types of golfers and always have positive outcomes in terms of etiquette/respect etc. If I find out the guy is using illegal stuff I'd definitely call him out on it. No harm, no foul. It's just a label.

As a fellow Texan cheater, which I've got to assume the OP is with that hat, more power to him. My cheating was relegated to hitting an extra shot once 20 years ago that my playing partner hadn't noticed and I barely moved the ball. I looked up, he wasn't watching, so I hit again. Counted it as a par instead of a bogey. That's the only shot from 20 years ago that I even remember. Some great, some good, some bad, most in between. I've since come clean with that person as it troubles me even after coming clean to this very day.

 

Even after stating that, I'd never ever call an 82 y/o a cheat even if I watched him use his foot wedge 12 times in a round. If he took me for a dollar, that'd be pretty high stakes for me, I'd still pay up gladly. I'd just be glad that he was still out there enjoying the game, hand him his dollar and then wish him well.

 

Come on guys, I've watched this community from afar for a long time. This isn't the way I'd have ever thought this thread would go. I'd suspect that the two dissenters are IRS auditors or agents of my ex-wife?

It's not opinion though. If he is not playing against anyone else, then the USGA rules don't apply. So in turn, it would be impossible for him to cheat. But, you're "that guy." But, it's OK, I'm only calling you out on it. It's just a label. Continue being "that guy" to your hears content.
