Played Sand Valley and the almost finished short course this past fall; & played the fall before when SV was on “preview play” or whatever. Great place, can’t recommend it enough. There’s another thread on here with some great information, I’m too lazy & not smart enough to post a link. I can’t wait to make my next trip up there & play mammoth. Definitely go if you’re able.

Great course; toughest walk I have ever played (for a purely walking course); Amazing optical "illusion" type course (holes where it looks like you can carry a spot and then find out it is over 350; loved the greens. Loved how it provides opportunities to score and opportunities to explode. Shots into the green require lots of knowledge to be most successful!

Seems like a bit of a drive but the pictures look fantastic!

Tougher than EH? Although EH is more just a long slog more than anything else.

I'll admit there is a fair bit of up and down on the front, but once you walk down 10th fairway, it's pretty flat until walking back up 18.

Agree on the knowledge bit - definitely a fun course to keep growing into. I played it 3 times over 2 days and I was much the better for it the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Does it make Wisconsin the 2nd best public access state for golf now?

Played Sand Valley Last September and the preview 9 on Mammoth WOW! I love both courses, I will admit I am biased towards C and C designs something about them I just find so much fun to play! I would highly recommend going. This season the short course and Mammoth Dunes will both be open as well. I have another trip booked for July.

That's pretty awesome, but I don't know how someone could walk more than 36 there.

Going up in mid-July. Bummed I can't stay on site, they are booked. But plan on staying in Wisconsin Rapid and driving down.

Is there any place to eat other than at the resort?

Drive to Wisconsin Rapid (20min) or Wisconsin Dells (45min) for choices, otherwise it's the resort or roadside bars/1 stop light sized towns.

I had a nice meal in W. Dells as I was staying south of the resort in Adams. If you are only there for 1 or 2 nights it's probably fine to just eat at SV, if I was staying longer I'd definitely venture out.

I got to play Sand Valley last May when the weather was miraculously 71* and sunny. I drove up from the Dells on family vacation and some buddies drove from Minneapolis to meet me.

Initial thosights... as you walk to the range it has this wow factor similar to Sand hills. You can see forever. The turf IS sandy. Everything is sandy. Even the Sand (bunkers) is more sandy. The greens are a bit sandy. Then you realize on the fourth hole... this Sand can be my friend. I really enjoyed playing there!

Design: every hole is different and the fairways and greens are big and playable. It wasn’t gusty that day but if the wind picked up, it would play 4 shots harder... easily. The bunkers were a little bit too fluffy, which must have to do with them settling in. So naturally is was difficult to hit out of the bunkers.

Compared to Erin hills, I liked sand valley as a design more. Erin hillls can be harder and is just this big massive Golf complex... sorta reminded me of a Scottish attempt/feel of Hazeltine. As if they cut all the trees down at Hazeltine and built a links style Scottish Club.

I get to play whistling straights later this summer and cannot wait! I do think this brings Wisconsin into the conversation as one of the best places for destination Golf! I love that I’m in the Minneapolis suburbs to not too far away!

I have read multiple posts that the front of SV is a brutal walk. Is this true? Is it the elevation that makes it tough? How about routing issues? I have an elderly playing partner who is not eligible for cart but has concerns about the walk after reading multiple posts. Any insight would be helpful

I played SV last August - 72 holes of SV plus 9 holes of Mammoth in 2.5 days. The walk was no tougher than Streamsong, Whistling or Erin. There is some elevation but it’s very doable as long as you are in decent shape.

If you are worried about the walk, hire a junior caddie there (kid) to carry your bag.

Sorry I do not - beyond what yelp would bring up. Hopefully a local or two can chime in!

I walked 36 with a caddie last June. It was a very hot day and our group was pretty beat by the end of our rounds. The terrain is not particularly challenging to walk, but the course is spread out and there was really no shelter to be found anywhere on the course. There is some up and down around the course. There is a switchback walk up to the 8th thee from 7th green and an odd walk from the 10th green to 11th tee which cuts through the tee box of another hole. With the blank canvas which C&C was provided to do their work, I was a little surprised that the walk was not as intuitive and pleasant as I expected. Not to say that the course is not fun - it is, but there was room left for improvement.

I'll say this knowing people's needs and wants differ, but just eat at the resort. The food at Craig's Porch is great, casual fare, and dinner at The Mammoth Lodge is upscale and outstanding. The atmosphere is special as well and adds to the entire SV experience.

Trails End, Lake Arrowhead Pines clubhouse(Greenside Grille), Friar Tucks, and several other options within a couple miles of the course.
