I think we got too far into the semantic weeds, though. My question is simpler than your detailed answer.

 

I just want to know why, when I see heads from New Level, Scott Golf, et al, I see very slight variations on the same theme.

 

Hence my comment about Asian blanks and open source designs. When I say "blanks" I really mean "same basic starting point for the DESIGN" (not the material).

 

When I look at the back of a Mizuno 900 Tour, I say, "ok, this is a totally custom design from Mizuno."

 

When I look at the back of a Callaway X-forged 2018, I think the same thing.

 

Maltby clubs look unique. I don't get that "open source" feeling from them, either.

 

But with basically every other upstart club brand, I DO get that open source design vibe.

Sorry, but no LH at the moment. We Re working on 1102 which will be our LH design. No exact timeline on that right now.

Not to beat a dead horse here, but the font used in the number stampings on the New Level irons is IDENTICAL to that used on the J15 series of Bridgestone irons.

 

A couple years back, I remember seeing the same font Adams used on their MB2s and CMBs on some open source heads.

 

Considering how many fonts are out there and how ANY of them could be used in number stampings, this looks a hell of a lot more like a white-labeling process than a coincidence.

 

And I don't want to give the wrong impression here—I'm completely fine with white-labeling processes, as brands are becoming more important than products every day.

 

(I'm a product guy, but I can accept this new reality the social media landscape has given us. The messenger is becoming more important than the message, for better or for worse.)

 

Because I'm so detail-oriented, I'd genuinely like to know if a company like New Level is starting with a proven design and then tweaking the cavity mass the tiniest bit to achieve a look, acoustic feedback, launch/spin biases, or anything else. (Obviously the custom milling and stuff—which looks fantastic—is mostly there for aesthetic and branding reasons.)

 

But the way it looks from my vantage point, you've got a few upstart club makers essentially starting with the same heads and just adding a little bit of unique flavor to define their respective brands.

 

And I'm fine with this! But I think many WRX-level consumers would like to know these sorts of details before considering new sticks.

I think we should worry less about the construction and get back to performance. I will be testing some irons really soon hopefully.
