Watching Spieth yesterday, he looks completely confused out there - especially on the tee. Like when he pulls the club back, he really has no idea what is about to happen.

 

A little surprised at how Rose looked yesterday, really thought he would come out hot.

Didn't Rose stink last event he played? He was absolutely going to be our Masters pick, before the season even started. But we flipped away from him after his last outing.

 

Rory better right the ship today, or that pick is gonna be a huge bust. Especially with the pool leaders in DJ this week.

So, I caught this and that for coverage yesteerday. Just went to Masters.org.

 

Just an amazing web site. Just clicking through Spieth's round shot by shot. He hits the first putt on 1 to like 2 feet. And I'm going, "I thought he bogeyed this hole. Didn't I jsut click on a 5?" UGGHGGHGHGGH!

 

After Jordan played well last Thursday and Friday, I was thinking, "oh, if he puts it together here, that's going to make him interesting in augusta." But I wasn't touching him with a 10 foot flag stick.

 

I can't believe what the leaderboard looks like.

 

Funniest bit from the coverage yesterday. (paraphrased)

 

Faldo : "how about those rib eyes from Reed? 22 ounce steaks."

 

Nantz : "that's a lot of food."

 

Faldo : "well, I didn't eat it all. i was sitting next to gary Player and he's telling me how important it is to put down the fork."

On the opposite side of Spieth, have you ever seen Mickelson go after the ball so hard with the driver then he did yesterday? Check out his track, especially his drive on #18. There is nothing left in the tank on that one- 321 yards uphill. He almost looks like he loses his footing but still cranks it out there.

Tiger just started firing that next level HGH. Phil has been taking it for over a year now. Goodness gracious, he's smashing the ball. He smashed a driver, then hit a long iron into 8 yesterday, all up the hill. If I can get my hands on some of the stuff those guys are on, and start hammering it down now, I may not age another day in my life. It will however, also cause massively accelerated growth of my undiagnosed Roy Rogers Gold Rush cancer.

He has seriously upped his club head speed over the last few years.

So I was mostly FF through clips last night but did they say that Bryson added 7 mph clubhead speed - when? Just this offseason? I picked up the conversation in the midpoint somewhere so it wasnt clear if that was 7 new mph just *now* or since he turned pro or what.

He's been at 118 since he got on tour according to radar stats at pgatour.

 

That sounds more like those claims when they get some guy on the range with the new GOLF BRAND SUPER SPEED DRIVER and the guy eventually manages to crank a couple up way over his baseline.

 

However, Mickelson has gone from 114 to 116 to 120 over the last 3 years. That's eye-brow-raisingly strange. he says it's from better leg drive based on TPI stuff. I think you'd be hard pressed to find many golfers who have seen an increase like that at ANY point in their careers.

For my birthday we went to Capital Grille and got the 22 ounce tomahawk steak, which I think is the same thing. It was ginormous. But then I shared it with the family. No way a single, normal human being could consume that thing.

They made a confusing comment about Bryson on #18 as well- as they showed the clip where he hit the flagstick they make a side note that Bryson spent 14 hours building his new clubs. But they didn't make clear when that was, it almost made it sound like he did it during Masters week?? Kind of amazing he would go out with brand new spec clubs and shoot -6 at Augusta National.

Faldo was saying at one point yesterday that Bryson just switched last week from like 124 gram grips to 54 gram grips. He also went to S400 shafts. Not sure if this has anything to do with the clubhead speed convo though. I don't remember that.

A-team sweet 16 Saturday. Played 20 holes with PQ yesterday, including a 9 hole skins game. Playing some today (wife is out of town).

 

IF we lose, I'm looking forward to going out Sunday, maybe just with my Sunday bag and have a round where I'm neither seriously competing, nor prepping for serious competition. Just go whack it around.

random golfer story.

 

So, our 12th hole was "closed" yesterday. They are working on drainage on it, but when the workers leave, it's fair game. there's a sign on the tee box that says "hole closed" but the pro has said as long as there are no workers, you can play it. There's still a hole and a flag on the green.

 

So, PQ and I come off 11, and it's near 5 pm so we played 15 and 16 to see if the workers leave. They do.

 

But, as we're walking to the 12th tee, there's a single in a cart in on 11. So, I go up to him before he gets to the green and I go, "you can go, we played 15 and 16 to wait for the workers to get out of here." he was also weird. He was driving all around in the rough looking for a ball, then he drove up right next to the green. he seemed discombobulated. he just sort of grunted at me.

 

So, he comes off 11 and is. . .irate would not be too strong a word.

 

We're just standing there and I go, "go ahead and play."

 

"well, it's closed."

 

"the workers are all gone. it's fine."

 

"well you can't play it and you jumped in front of me."

 

"no, we're letting you through. You can go through."

 

he says something else totally huffy and skips 12 anyway.

 

we were like "that guy is having a bad day and wanted someone else to have a bad day."

 

it was one of my weirder encounters out there.

Weekend golf plans: Saturday Junior plays a tournament at Northwest (should I live tweet it?), Sunday doing taxes, might able to play 9 while the kids have their piano lessons. The piano teacher lives just down the street from Laytonsville.

My only rounds so far this handicap season were a shamble and scramble, so I have nothing postable. Playing Saturday and looking to post a score and get some confidence going in to my CC match with GregH on Monday morning. There's some overnight rain forecast for Sunday/Monday, and it keeps edging slightly earlier. Looks like playing Monday AM will be no problem.
