MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

This is usually right when we get a cold or snow snap. We've gotten so lucky this year not just with the warm weather but with the big precip dumps that we have gotten, its been rain and not snow. What are the odds on a day we get mostly rain that Pinehurst/area gets a few inches of snow - I think just east of them it was up to 5"? I'll take it though.

Yea, I know. I still think we will get a decent, measurable snow in March. Maybe a 6" that will melt in a few days.

I dont remember April but we've definitely had two massive storms in March - the 15-20" kind - and one in late February.

MV has gotten ahead of the curve in starting some on course construction work so it would be really nice if we could just roll into spring relatively unscathed at this point.

turf has done a TON of work on the courses this winter. Lots and lots of tree trimming, some removal, and some irrigation stuff as well.

There was a huge tree limb that overhung the 5th tee box. You had to aim left of where you would have otherwise wanted to and if you hit a pull or a draw you'd flirt with OB. Last week City texts a picture that they'd cut it down. So I get on that tee box all excited to NOT aim left. I'm thinking I can just play a dead straight ball. i pulled it. and drew it. and it ran three feet OB. I've wanted that tree limb to be cut down for a couple years and the first time i play the hole without it I hit it OB. GOLF. I DID hit a dead straight one with the second shot, hit a PW (I'm flexing as i type that) to 15 feet, and left it short. I was going for the glorious second ball birdie. alas it was a double bogey.

Last week I played that hole and hit one OB left, hit the second one near OB. I had 190 in. Had to hook a 5 iron around the trees and hit it to 15 feet, then I made the putt for bogey.

Meanwhile, the +4.7 (you read that right) that we were playing against 3 putted for bogey. LOL.

There are still some limbs and branches to deal with, visually and for realZ.

If you see a billow of smoke emmitting from the pines of pinehurst mid day Friday, do not be alarmed. I will have succumbed to the idea of throwing papers in the air at work and joining the herd down there. Sorry if there's no slots, I have a credit card to swipe and can play as 5 with whoever will take me!

I know a bunch of you guys have multiple pairs of Trues...any input on how to size these vs something like FJ or Under Armour? I'm looking at the Knits, and wear a 9 in the former two brands.

I ONLY wear trues, but I usually wear a 7.5 or an 8 in most shoes, and the 7.5's have been better in the trues for me. So, they might run a HAIR big, but I'm not slipping all over in the 8's, either. It's almost like a thin sock works better with the 7.5 and thicc sock works better with the 8. They're that close.

NLU Talk Wednesday :

They're clearly working me over, as it seems to have become habit to watch the Tourist Sauce episodes when they premiere on Tuesday evenings.

It was certainly one of the most match-centric episodes they've ever done, with Tron going all-in against DJ. You had a really good sense of why their match stood where it did, throughout the episode. Tron chipping like a machine around tightly cut Donald Ross green surrounds, but yipping with the putter was a major upset. His putt on 18 was so sorry.

I'm a little sad the emphasis on their match took some shine away from Big Randy appearing to play a very good round, and wipe the floor with Soly. I think the C-Suite forced the post production team to leave a lot of that footage on the cutting room floor, to save face for Soly.

The course got an appropriate amount of camera time, and coverage. They didn't beat you over the head with it, but gave you a good sense of the track.

Very solid episode, overall. I think they're hitting a nice stride this season, so I'm definitely looking forward to the Pinehurst area episodes.

Let's speculate on how Callaway's bet on NLU is paying off. First, it has to be a decent chunk of change. They have five full time employees. From what I can tell their revenue comes from the following sources:

Corporate sponsors Callaway, BMW, and Charles Schwab. I'm guessing Callaway is way more "primary" than the other three

Podcast Ad revenue - the CBD people, draft kings sports book, whoever else advertises with them

youtube ad revenue - they don't put out that many videos and they don't get that many views. Like if you compare them to crossfield his videos get multiple times more views and he puts out like 5x the content

Refuge ad revenue - i went to website once. not much going on there

Merch sales - i've seen a grand total of 0 people ever wearing NLU merch

People who just give them money - i forget what this program even is

All that to say I'm going to irresponsibly guess that Callaway sponsors them for between 250-400k. And I suspect that some of that is not just straight cash but in taking care of expenses for certain things. Like Callway may have paid their expenses when they went to the LPGA events last year or something like that. How does that compare to what they pay someone like Xander. And how much bang for their buck are they getting?

I feel like I'm just not really the mark for a lot of advertising, and sponsorship stuff. I'm not going to play a certain club because a tour pro, or youtube personality does. I'm not going to drive a car, or choose an investment company because their logo is plastered on a shirt, or youtube video. The exception might be clothes/shoes. I'm not a big shopper, so seeing a pro wearing something may legitimately be the only way a brand can get my eyes on their product.

I also don't understand advertising, at all. It seems almost impossible that whatever their sponsors are paying them is leading directly to sales that justify it.
