MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

Awww DC are we focusing on the shot or impact point into the ball and after. If you can hit off crappy grass why not good grass?

Agreeing with Fabb

Crappy grass range is exactly what I spent my formative years as a golfer practicing on.  The entire grass tee was a downhill lie, with very sparse grass, so you were primarily hitting off bumpy dirt.  The skill you attain by learning to strike irons cleanly from those type of conditions absolutely transfers to playing golf.  I'd reckon it transfers much more to improving one's performance on the course than hitting 10x the amount of balls from a "great" mat would.

Not to drag on the range debate, but would you rather:

1) Have a range with good mats and full flight balls with a grass short game area

2) A grass range that doesn't allow you to hit woods

#1.  You can tee up a driver so it does not matter if it is grass or mats.

A good driving range is hard to come by around here it seems.  Our club is mats most of the time and has restricted flight balls.  Now that COVID restrictions are easing up, we're on the grass on the weekends, but a full grass range with full flight balls would be ideal.

It seems that almost every range has that compromise, maybe Waverly Woods and some of the higher tier private clubs do as well. I've had to ask myself the question a few times, my club's range is newly grassed but the range ends at about 210 yards. It's a pretty solid chuck in terms of an annual fee and I still have to go somewhere else to practice full speed drivers.

MV has both of these - which makes the crappy grass range tolerable. Good mats, full flight Titleists, A+ grass short game area/bunkers where you can hit up to 80 or so yard shots (its a little removed form the clubhouse) plus separate chipping green near the clubhouse.

Two tiered grass range in front of the mats but it essentially turns into irons only at that point. The other stuff is why I dont care too much about the crappy grass range, I just use Burke Lake when I need to.

Not gonna debate grass vs mats, will just say at this point, the quality of my practice depends more on my goals and practice habits/focus. Intentionality is required no matter what you're hitting off of.

Side note - remember those old mat set ups with the black rubber all around and the one cutout with the turf mat? The foot area would be all worn down by the metal spikes and the turf would be so hollowed out you had to hit from the edges. I remember just learning to hit mid irons off the black rubber because there was never any decent mats.

Hey if you had posted your putters in the BST like you said you were going to instead of flapping off about Fabb, that post probably would have been worded differently...

I had a match scheduled Sunday morning and absolutely, in no way wanted to play. But had all my winter/rain gear set out the night before, new hand warmers, warm gear, the whole nine.

Never been happier to have my app blip at 630a telling me the course is closed.

I really wanted our two man match to be canceled but it wasn’t. Lost 2&1.

I don’t think I hit more than bottom groove on most of my shots. It was bad.

@Ocgolfrick Did you get to Pierce's?

Sadly no.  Wife and I expanded our horizons and hit two new places.  Normally I think of Williamsburg as a sea of chain restaurants, a couple of those colonial taverns, and Pierce's.  We did hit the Cheese Shop in Merchant's Square for lunch the first day (Friday) then did Second Street Bistro that night. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Upscale American Eats, Top 5 burger I ever had- with great cocktails- especially Mojitos. Then we hit Amber Ox Brewery in Merchants Square the next night- over the top hipster place, but great food- beer is so-so.  They do a biscuit board appetizer with whipped butter and house made marmalade and jelly- its a must have.  Kitchen was backed up at Amber Ox and took a while, but they put me in front of a 50" TV with the Charles Schwab on so I was perfectly content.

You had me at "whipped butter".

Just kidding.

Not really.

Pierce's has been a regular stop for me whenever I'm close, but it's kinda hit or miss for me. Overall I've always enjoyed it, I just feel like some meals/meats have been better than others. I'll still go though, I like enough. The hush puppies and greens alone are worth it lol.

The Cheese Shop is always solid, and there's a place across there with a good variety of roasted nuts...
