Mossy mentions it during CoD one night, I say absolutely. I see its Memorial Day weekend. We have a 3 day club event on the holiday weekends. So I'd say "bailing" is a stretch...

@dcmidnight Since you bailed on one unofficial Hive event, you could sign up for this Sunday's event at Schoolhouse Nine.  We need 1 more player to have an even number for a team game.

We're currently at 9.  10 players would work well as we could do two teams of 5.  8 players would work well as we could do a same day 3-round match play bracket.  If we stay at 9 players, we'll come up with something like a self best ball low total score through the 3 nine hole loops in addition to the CTPs and skins.  

 

If you know someone who would like to play, encourage them to sign up as 10 would be great and if we get more than 10, we'll figure out the games.  Weather forecast looks perfect for Sunday.  We'll tee off at 9 am and it will be 60* and will warm up to 80* by the afternoon.

1st Annual Unofficial Hive Goes to School tournament complete.  

 

Congrats to @Sterling_247 for his 1st place -4 under finish in the 3-loop best ball event.  Solid 2nd place finish at -2 by @misplacedtexan83 winning in a scorecard playoff over Sheriff Marshall who finished 3rd at -2.

I am still on cloud 9 from that ace on 15 at WoMan.  Was a PW from 125 to a front right pin.  It felt amazing off the club face, high and straight at the stick.  We all saw it bounce once, but the surface of the front of the green is out of view from the tee box.  Everything was rolling out all day on the greens and I wasn't really thinking much of it - just was hoping it would be a decent birdie chance.  I was ahead of the group when walking up to the green.  When I got to in view of the hole and the front of the green, I didn't see anything.  The rough wasn't deep enough greenside to swallow a ball, so I figured I'd humor myself and check the hole.  I'm playing these dumb (read: AWESOME) looking black dot prov1's and damned if that black dot wasn't staring straight up at me from the bottom of the hole!  

 

I've had some close calls the past couple years so it was nice to finally get on the board with one.

Shoutout to Sean for planning a great event on Sunday. Schoolhouse Nine has been on my bucket list for a while now and I've probably driven right past there a dozen times without ever stopping. Really fun par 3 course, definitely worth the drive if you havent been out there. Not easy by any means, some of the greens/slopes can be setup for some really tough pin options. I hit every club from 7 through 58* and if I had brought my 6 and 62* - I would have hit those too.

 

Fantastic beer selection, excellent pinball options and the hot chicken sandwich was definitely an A+.

 

I realize its not realistic for every course to be run like this place is. But playing as a tensome, dogs on the course, kids out there having fun - everything golf should be.

I don't understand the guys signing up that know they won't break 80. I get that anyone can have an off day, but to go shoot 93 at a US Open qualifier. I dont get it

Another layer to this is you must have a handicap index of 1.4 or lower to sign up. Reverse sandbagging

Great point. Points to a lot of vanity caps out there. Would love to play a few of those guys for money

Without doing the math I'll just assume to get to a 1.4 you have to be posting some negative differentials in there right, meaning you have some posted rounds below par or damn close to it. That is some serious, hardcore reverse sandbagging. I never understood that.

 

When I was playing great last summer I had a couple rounds near par and a handful in the low-mid 70s, the best I got down to was a 2.8. You have to really be engineering that handicap to get to a 1.4 - and then shoot 93.

It all depends on the course ratings and tees you're playing. If you're playing member tees at most courses then you'll have to go under par to a couple times to get there. If you're playing 6800-7000 yrds on most courses, they'll be rated around 72-73 and shoot even to +2 you'll get below a 2 cap. I'm a +.1 right now and only have 1 round under par.

Just a side discussion, what do you think the effect of a club index versus a traveling index have on this conversation? Say someone who plays 98% of their rounds from the same comfy tees and grinds their way to a legit 1.4 index versus someone who is a normal casual non-club member golfer and plays all over from different tees based on who they're playing with. 

 

Obviously, the handicap system takes into account ratings from different tees and different difficulty of courses but can't take the psychological impact of the above scenario. I'd be curious to what you guys would think on that since obviously you are both close to scratch or in @Sterling_247 's case, better than scratch.

Isn't it true most people will average 3 strokes above their handicap. If they shoot their handicap then it was a really good round (obviously)

In my experience, if you're only playing one course all the time then your handicap will not travel as well as if you're cap is based on playing a wide selection of courses. As far as I know (I'm far from an expert) cap doesn't take into account whether or not you're playing the same course all the time. I'm a lot more likely to shoot my cap at a course that I know vs one I don't know even if they're rated the same.

Yeah I always thought your handicap was your “potential” so shooting it meant you had reached your potential. Isn’t that why shooting lower than your handicap has a bigger effect on your handicap than a higher than handicap score would?
