Hot Melt

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a driver that had hot melt in it and love the way it sounds and feels. I don’t see any difference ball flight wise so i assume its neutral. My question is for a one time job where i don’t want to buy the whole set up are there any cheaper alternatives? I saw some old threads talk about some tacking glue. Is that a viable option? Might be a dumb question, but would a hot glue gun work?

Thanks

Rat glue, or something similar that never really dries, must stay viscous. Hot glue is too rigid and will break off and rattle.

I would not use rat glue or a cheap setup. The hotmelt used in tour heads and professional shops use a special glue that was designed for this purpose and can withstand extreme temperature swings. Rat glue is cheap junk that i would HIGHLY advise you stay clear of. My advice is contact some local shops (don't bother with golf galaxies, pga superstores, ect...) and see if anyone has a REAL setup. If not find someone online. If you have trouble pm me as i can do the work in my shop. Best of luck.

I worked for one of the OEMs out on tour and we started using Rat Glue in about 2003 or 2004. When I later owned a high volume fitting shop I used the same unit but it was expensive and it took forever to warm the glue up.

Since I've become kind of a weekend warrior I use the one Golf Works sells. I like that each cartridge has its own nozzle so you can bend them to get into different places without having to permanently alter the gun.

I think it's about $85 but most places will charge $50 to hotmelt one club so it pays for itself pretty quickly. I charge my buddies $10 to do it and I've become the popular kid on the block with a lot of them. Well worth the cost to be able to hotmelt your own clubs in less than 5 minutes.

Thanks for the info guys. Does anyone know of any local places in the Atlanta area by chance?

Just make sure you know how much wgt you wants to add, and that can be found out with testing using lead tape.

Hot melt can be removed, but its a h...of a job, so consider it to be a permanent change of head wgt.

Thanks for the info. Any recommendations on where to get a rat glue setup ie glue and the gun

Look here. The setup in the link below may be okay for someone that is going to work on their own equipment. There is also "commercial" setups available on this site but at a much greater cost.

This is probably the setup I'd purchase if I needed to have the equipment to work on my own clubs. I have access to a tour shop; when I need to add some hot melt to a club I go use the gun they have.

That's basically the same unit as the one Golf Works sells only it's $40 more and the replacement cartridges are also more expensive.

Any idea how many grams of hotmelt each replacement cartridge does?

I believe they're 50 grams. I probably average 10 heads out of each cartridge. I only put a couple grams at a time in but a little leaks out when you're heating it up.

Oh wow...way more than I thought would be in them.

I actually use it to hold shaft tip weights in irons and wedges too. I look at it as a little insurance for avoiding rattles when I have to use tip weights.

I used to have a big industrial unit but the melting pot on it was about 3 gallons so it took hours to heat up. This gun is really handy to have around and like I said it's really nice that the nozzle is on each individual cartridge so if you want to bend it to get to a different spot in a head you don't have to risk ruining the gun.

Just received my order from Hotmelt and it seems perfect for my personal use. Never had any experience but was pretty simple to use. Will say, I also ordered a second tube of melt and apples to apples your cost diff between Hotmelt and Golfworks is minimal. Golfworks includes 2 tubes of melt with the order and shipping is half what Hotmelt charges. Even less if you wait for the $1.99 shipping deal on purchases over $60 from Golfworks. As far as the unit itself, they appear identical to my eye. Just thought I'd throw my experience out there!!

We just bought another champ gun set up and will start offering the service in the next month or so. There's just too much demand not to do it, plus we have a ton of raw heads coming which I'm sure customers will want melted.

Same reason i got the Champ tour van setup. Been doing tons of work for people on and off the board and I was taught the tricks of the trade by the tour guys :D It's a hard service to find locally.
