TaylorMade P790 Ferrule

Radeon962

Recommended Posts

Looking to reshaft my P790's with some Recoil Prototype shafts and looking for what ferrule to pick up. Golfworks has a "0.370" TaylorMade Universal Ferrule" and Billybob's has "R15, RSi, Aero Burner, Speed Blade, RBZ, Rocketbladez Iron Ferrules" (which comes in Taper or Parallel).

I know the P790's are Taper Tip 0.355" but am not finding a specific model that says it works with the P790's.

I have to believe someone on here has reshafted their set of P790's and knows which ferrule works.

Thanks, Bill

I haven’t done p790’s so you may want specific input from someone else, but these should probably work.

Golfworks item BB0009

3/4 inch tall Generic .355 collared ferrule. Make sure you use collared for graphite. I use them for everything anymore to help center the shaft, but definitely for graphite. I use them for many clubs. Titleist, Callaway, Hogan, Vokey.

Exceptions being Ping and PXG. Those are oddballs and take specific ones.

The 790 ferrules use the same system as the milled wedges. It is a special TM product that seats on top of a plastic olive that sits in a recess in the bore and works like a plumbing compression fitting.

It's been mentioned in a few threads and nobody has managed to source either the correct TM ferrule or olive.

It makes it pretty easy to save the ferrule as it's pretty much snapped in place on top of the olive and most sets have at least 3 or 4 that are loose anyway. But saving the olive is a PITA and without it the ferrule is very hard to center. Best to scrap it and use a conventional aftermarket, I'm afraid I can't tell you which one would work though.

mine fell off and snapped.

Pro getting me a direct replacement from Taylormade, seems it takes a while to get here.

Olive? Ferrules snapped in place?

Wow. It’s not often that I have no clue what someone is referring to on this site, but this is one of those times.

It Sounds like TM apparently decided to make something really simple much more complicated than it needs to be. It doesnt surprise me with how they’ve been run these last few years.

Haha! I'm confused too! I just reshafted my p790 black 3 iron last night and it was like any other iron I've done. Prepped the shaft, applied some glue to the inside of a collared ferrule, shaft and hosel, pushed the 2 together and done. Maybe I'm missing something...

I've had a couple of ferrules come lose on mine and seems to be a strange arrangement.

It looks like there is an orange plastic ring which seats slightly inside the head and protrudes beyond the head a little. The ferrule then snaps in place over the top of the plastic ring which in turn centers it

I haven't pulled any shafts from a 790 yet to investigate this further but haven't seen anyone else mention this arrangement yet

This is on dot serial lighter heads

This seems like a better explanation.

That's strange! Never seen one of those on a golf club! It looks like you could just put a little epoxy around it and tap it back down into place?

The plastic ring isn't easy to save when you pull the head and you see precisely half of it in the photo. You can skip it and use a normal ferrule or I guess you might find something similar to use to center the ferrule, I'm not sure what

Are you wanting to reshaft or just fix/replace the ferrule?

Ah got ya. Looks like taylormade is using some cheap stuff! I noticed when I pulled the shaft from my p790 3 iron it didn't take much heat at all.

It's actually quite a good system. But they are using special bullet shaped tip weights that you can't buy and these plastic rings to seat the ferrules that you can't buy, etc. So in practice it's a PITA to do much with them other than to go to conventional ferrules and tip weights on re-shafts which is a shame

If you are pulling shaft and re-installing, why is it such a shame to "go to conventional ferrules and tip weights"? Do they not look/work the same? I'm asking seriously, as I have a set of P770 on the way and will most likely re-shaft right off the bat. If I need to pre-order special tip weights and ferrules that will be nice to know ahead of their arrival.

They will work just fine. My comment was that if TM go to the trouble of making a club that has a tapered recess that is the perfect fit for their weight system then it's a shame that they don't make it available so the consumer can just drop in the correct weight on builds. Same with the ferrules, if you could get hold of the plastic rings that seat them then it's easy to keep your re-shaft looking strictly OEM

This is what I got back from BillyBob's golf:

https://www.billybobsgolf.com/product.php?productid=18032

these are the closest I have right now. I am trying to make them with silver ring on the bottom instead of the top. Will be a few months though. In the mean time these will fit.

And from another WRX member who has reshafted some P790's:

Used the “collared” ferrule. .360 X .545 3/4 inch collared taper iron ferrules. Billy Bobs

They should work just fine. Just a little shorter than the 790's but the collar is a good choice

I decided I was going to try and change out all the ferules on my irons given a couple cracked and snapped off. It’s my first time taking apart a club and I thought all I needed was new ferules, unaware of everything that has been shared here. Can I reinstall the club to the shaft without the olive/plastic ring for which the specific TM ferrule sits on and just use a 335 ferrule (golf works item number 61PW)? Based on my understanding the TM components are difficult to come by. Any recommendations?

Reshafted my 770s and some 790's and just picked up a bag of TM specific collared ferrules from the Bay that had the same single ring they have been using for a few years. Otherwise, getting the correct collared ferrule size from BillyBob or GW is a good idea.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/355-x-7-8-Iron-Ferrules-REVERSED-CHROME-RING-Fits-TaylorMade-P-Series-10-PCS/312398447199?hash=item48bc66025f:g:T6MAAOSwvNVcIU~8

They are .355 taper bore irons IIRC, ..335's are for woods not irons.

Don't worry about the TM system that's been talked about here. It something custom they used to speed up assembly on their production lines because they didn't need to install the ferrule on the shaft at the perfect spot before shaft installation, and the ferrules didn't need finishing after assembly. Because these ferrules were already the correct outer diameter for the head, they could just snap the ferrule down on the ring after the epoxy cured and they were done. Perfect fit and finish with less manual effort, but poor long-term durability.

The GolfWorks ferrules you mention are for woods with .335 shafts. You want something like BB0009 from GolfWorks: a collared, .355 ferrule. Since this will be your first time, you're also going to need to make sure you get the ferrule installed at the correct spot on the shaft before installing the shaft. Plenty of advice here on how to install ferrules, but I prefer to use GolfWorks Oversized Collared Ferrule Installation Tool (GW0060). Mark the hosel depth on the shaft, measure with the installation tool, then use the the tool and a hammer to tap down the ferrule to the correct spot. Easy and quick to get the ferrule to the perfect spot.

Another thing to keep in mind is that unless the OD of the hosel on your irons perfectly matches the OD on your ferrule, you will have to finish them. Most ferrule installs are not just "install and go" since the ferrule ODs are usually oversized to fit a wide number of clubs. This means reducing the OD of the ferrule in some way (e.g., belt sander with a linen or other fabric belt, or strips of sandpaper, etc) and wiping down with acetone at the end to remove the scratches and give the ferrule a nice shine. Both of these things take some time to get good at (especially the acetone part), but we all had to start somewhere. Good luck!
