What length do you play your Driving Iron?

What length do you play your driving iron at? I am currently playing the P790 UDI at the stock 40" with the PX HZRDUS Black 85g. Off the tee the length is great, but seems a bit long when I am off the deck. Leads to heavy shots from time to time. Any suggestions?

I use Tensei Pro White 100tx in my 3 UDI at 39.5 inches. It's a nice compromise and I have no issues off the deck with it. Longer and I start to struggle.

Thanks for the feedback, I am considering going a little shorter with the club to avoid some of the heavy shots off the deck. I do not mess with club length much, and wonder what performance issues I may see if I just hack of some length on the butt end of the PX shaft and re-grip. According to the TM site, the P790 UDI in steel is .75" shorter.

I play the P790 UDI, and I had it shortened 1/2" due to the same reasons you mentioned.

 

I added a bit of lead tape to the back of the club to get the swing weight back so that it matched my long irons. It felt noticeably lighter after shortening it, and it kind of threw me off, to be honest. Now that the swing weight and the length are where I want it, it's probably my favorite club in the bag.

 

I think shortening it is worth it, but if you do decide to go that route, just be sure that you're ok with the possibility of having to add some lead tape to the back or finding some other way to bump the swing weight back up.

How tall are you? I'm 5'10" and play the exact same club/shaft. I don't think it's really designed to be hit off the deck which is why it's giving you issues. A 3-wood might be a better choice for you.

My DHY protos (21* and 24*) play to a half-inch longer than the equivalent iron length. The 24* DHY (4-iron) plays to a 3-iron length on my MP64's, the 21* (3-iron) would play to a 2-iron length.

 

I initially tried playing them with the stock length, but had some issues off the deck with them. Also, I was looking for a specific yardage gap, and throwing one or both of them in there just pushed the issue further down the bag rather than solving it with the right mix of fairways/hybrids/driving irons.

Did you tip that pro white any additional to play in the DI compared to what you would have tipped to play it in a hybrid?

I play a Crossover Ping... which is basically like a driving iron and I have it cut down a quarter of an inch... So that basically gets me at 39.5

I have an i500 3i playing at its stock length of 39.5", my iBlades are +1/2" which actually coincides with the stock length of the i500 3i and 1/2" increments but he 3i seems short to me. Not sure if its the longer hosel of the i500 but trying to decide if I should extend it a 1/2"..

I have a Cobra F9 4i playing 39.5 with a Tour AD-IZ hybrid 95 shaft. It's about a 1/2 longer than the Cobra King Utility I took out of the bag. Takes a little adjustment, but its coming along. It's just a club off the tee, though. I'll hit my 5w instead of it from the fairway.

When I bought my 716CB's 3-PW, I ordered 716 T-MB 17* 2 iron which comes stock at 39.5". I had the stock shaft pulled and a new PX 5.5 cut to playing length of 39.5". I am 5'10 and use it off a Tee and the deck. The TRICK to hitting 1 or 2 iron sweet off the deck is choking down about 1" to ensure proper contact. Depending on fairway speed it's 210-220 yard club for me.

I play my irons +1/2” but want the 2 iron to be playable off the deck. The 1 iron really is off the tee only.

Was 18*, 39.5" with an AD95X but sometimes it went too far.
