List of JUMBO persimmons.

Obviously the M09 LFF is the piece de resistance when it comes to deep faced persimmon, but what other models of note are out there? I know some of you degenerates have decades of experience in this stuff.

 

As a freshly baptized member of the vintage tribe, it seems the early 50s Macs ran things. I LOVE the look of the M09 LFF as well as the M85s, but seeing as how ill probably never lay eyes on the LFF, what are some options for some beautiful deep faced 6 **** beauty?

MacGregor George Bayer drivers were deep faced. There are a lot of people who love these.

Welcome to our vintage tribe. You brought up my favorite classic golf topic. I just added a Jumbo M85TW to my MacGregor Jumbo collection. It goes great with my Jumbo 693 and my LFF drivers. The small club in the first picture is my all time favorite 693 otherwise fairly good size head. The middle 2 drivers last 2 pictures rare as it gets Jumbos M85TW & 693. The M85TW was from same restorer as Patrick's and I plan to game it big time.

I would agree in stating an LFF would be the _piece de resistance_ for deep face woods. Best of luck in searching for one. I was on the search for 25 years or so until I was offered one from a friend/collector/pga professional.

Here's a set George Bayer woods on Ebay. The seller has the name misspelled and no mention of Bayer. From what ive read all Bayers were deep face.

I think the best I’ve ever seen maybe other than this one Patrick Boyd posted on NCW Instagram story the other day. I don’t know that I’ve seen a more perfect golf club in my life.

The well known Tony Penna deep-face driver is the MOD JS (Jupiter Slugger), I have a poor example as below.

I’ve seen a few deep faced drivers from smaller makers like Izett and Irv King come up on eBay occasionally but I’ve only seen two LFF’s on there in the last year.

 

Like Jiggered I was able to snag a Penna Jupiter Slugger recently and my main frontline driver is an early 80’s Macgregor M09.

That one is sorta a mystery to me. It is not a Jupiter Slugger or it would have the JS designation but it is darn sure deep faced. Not sure on the model 85 designation either. I suspected it may have been a custom piece but then again most custom pieces are stamped that way with Hand Made on it too. But it is gorgeous.

The last picture is the only 1950 LFF M09 I've ever seen and is all original. Lucky me $15 at estate sale. I have 3 1950 LFF M09Ts in my collection including the super restoration done by Dave Wood along with a '52 wbw M09 and a centennial. At the time Dave thought it to be the finest example of an LFF until the other small pictured one came to him last year. The only 1 of 6 LFFs I still have not seen is the wbw '52 M09T. I'm pretty sure the wrw M09 & M09T drivers are '54 or '54-'55 each model produced for 2 years.

Saw it on eBay recently - had “Custom” stamped on toe of sole. Probably should have tried to get it, but had X300 shaft in ?.

I have a Toney Penna TP 85 that looks like the one in the photo. The photo might be a little distorted because mine doesn't have a deep face and the TP 85 was a stock model from 1988. However Penna drivers could be custom ordered. I have a couple that were custom models. Another nice deep face driver that is hard to find is a Ben Hogan 1966 Deep Face model. It took me over 20 years to find a good one. I was specifically looking for the 1966 model because it was the year they did not have a white slip behind the red insert and it was the first year they went to the inverted "Y" screw pattern on the face. Also it sits up square. The 1965 model has a standard screw pattern and the 1967 model went back to the white slip but had the inverted "Y". It never set up to my eye in a pleasing manner due to the 1/2* hook angle they added to that model. The Hogan Deep Face drivers were good clubs. I remember a member of the club I played at had one. I was in high school and he was an insurance salesman, about a 8 handicap, but we played together a few times and he hit that driver so pure he hardly ever missed a fairway.

Don't forget the earlier Pre-WWll MacGregor drivers. BJM and BJD: 2" face Depth. Also DFD Armour and Penna from around 1953 I am not home, or I would post a couple pics. Maybe Teevons can put up some photos.

Different types of Jumbos. The Wood Bros Jumbo Texan Dave made 1 7/8" deep same as '50 LFF but also much wider. The Richard O'Hara 693 not deeper than Dave's All-American but it is a bigger block.

UPDATE!!!! On the Penna Model 85 jtbell37 posted---- Had a friend of mine from Texas who lurks on here texted me and he does know what he is talking about. The Model 85 was made in 87 and 88 they were only made for 18 months. The last 6 months of production they were stamped TP85 only. He further stated they did not make many. Theres the M09 LFF, and the Tommy Armour 693 Models from MacGregor, and the very popular M85 model

In addition to the TP 85, there are a number of Toney Penna JS (Jupiter Slugger) models out there.

PowerBilt has been making large headed Drivers for some time. There's a 1953 H&B Bomber Driver close by.

Jumbo, Deep Face and Large Full Face could be considered the same. Year of manufacturing seems to be the determinant. Walter Hagen manufactured a deep face in the middle 30's and Wilson manufactured one in the late 30's. I wonder if before the steel shaft period, manufacturer's made "Deep Face" mode's for Hickory Shaft woods? I wouldn't be surprised.

In the 80s, Ram also had a deep face driver, their TW801 model in the TW800 / TW801 / TW802 / TW805 catalog of persimmons.

 

Have a couple of them, I'll see if I can't get past my inherent procrastination ability to snap a pic or two....

Tom, it sure does.  The 1952 M09 LFF was a w/r/w insert set in the 5 screw pattern that was standard for the 1952 mode woods.  The 1953 M09 LFF remained w/r/w insert but with a 6 screw pattern that would be the standard for EOMs going forward.  The 1954 and 1955 M09 LFFs were w/b/w insert.  These pictures are from my Kaplan MacGregor book.

If it were only that easy.  I am always on the hunt for another LFF.  I would love a 1950-1951 like my favorite of yours.  To have a '52 to compliment my '53 would be terrific.  Then there is adding a '54/'55.  My ideal collection would have terrific representations of the '50/'51, '52 and '54/'55.  I would be more than satisfied.  As it is now, I am appreciative that I have one truly outstanding LFF in my collection.

What constitutes a jumbo head? I have this department store looking MacGregor laminate with a very deep face - 1 7/8 inches. Sits a bit open, metal insert, blonde finish. I love it but kinda messed it up with some past experimenting.

 

It's under construction right now. Need to go look for a flathead to take out the shaft pin in the back the neck. Nothing I own fits. 

 

I'm thinking of putting a graphite shaft in it just for kicks. I have an old MacGregor wedge shaft in my modernish putter, so seems to make sense to throw a modern graphite into the vintage driver. I can guarantee it will be a one-of-a-kind bag.

Yes 1 7/8” is the standard. My M85TW and 693 are both 1 7/8” as are 4 of 5 LFFs in my collection. My ‘54 LFF is 1 13/16” and so is my 945W jumbo. Both are still close enough especially the 945W for its large overall size. I had a 2” ‘54 but found that the neck under the whipping was 50% epoxy and I sent it back to the seller.
