Has anyone played the QUOTA betting game?

Recommended Posts

Basically you take 36 minus your course handicap and that is your "quota" - is if you're a 20 handicap, your quota is 16.

You then earn points based on your GROSS score as follows:

Bogey - 1 point

Par - 2 points

Birdie - 4 points

Eagle - 8 points

Whoever scores over their quota the most wins the pot.

Have a trip this weekend with 8 guys with handicaps from 6 to 23, so quotas will be from 30 to 13 and wondering if anyone has an insight on how this game usually works out for low versus higher handicaps.

On unfamiliar and/or high slope rating courses, I've found that lower handicap players are more likely to make their points. You might want to consider making it a 2-person or 4-person team game rather than winner take all.

We play QUOTA all the time, especially on multi round multi day buddies trips. We adjust the point totals after each round so nobody is ever really out of it. For example if my quota # was 20 and I get 14, we would take the difference and cut it in half for the next round. So my new number would be 17. We like doing the adjustment because it allows players to have a chance even when they have a bad round.

Versions of that (with or without the non-linear scoring for birdies and eagles) have been the most popular game at the three different clubs I've belonged to over the years. If the points are 1-2-3-4 instead of 1-2-4-8 it is just stroke play with a gross double-bogey max.

The modified stableford version benefits the low cap a bunch. The birdie premium is where we make our money in our games. My quota will be filled out the front nine on an average day with the modified version.

Yes, great format. As Dsevans8 stated, adjust after each round to keep it relative. Also, we did 90% of handicap for the first year of a trip and everyone came well under their quota. This year we changed to 70% and it was pretty spot on. Would suggest looking at that if you are playing a course you are unfamiliar or different courses throughout the trip.

We do our biggest money tournaments at my club using this format. I'd disagree slightly that it excessively benefits high cappers. I think it's the inconsistent mid-cap that benefits the most, as they're more likely to have a "hot" day than a high cap. In about a dozen tournaments using this format, the highest cap I can remember seeing win was a 12, but it's still usually a single digit cap taking the money.

Yeah the inconsistent mid-cap gets the benefit here, because they're more likely to make a birdie or two but the blow up holes don't really hurt them as much

We call it Chicago too and it’s 39- your cap. Bonus for excellence.

Say a scratch. He has a quota of 39. He gets 18 pars. 36 points. He misses his quota by 3 points. Different scratch gets 9 birdies and 9 bogies. He gets 45 points and beats his cap by 6. It’s not what you shoot, it’s how you shoot it.

It’s a great game for all caps. The lower caps have a HUGE advantage once they get over their quota compared to higher caps. But it usually takes them 16-18 holes to get there. Higher caps can get to their quota much quicker, but piling on top of it is harder. Almost every time one of us (6) 33 quota guys is battling my son (28), 11 quota on the last hole.

Great game. Not much suspense until the final holes. I much prefer it when we do F/B and overall quotas. You don’t need to wait until 16 or 17 to start feeling the nerves.

We play the quota game at our club quite often. Sometimes we use the 36 point method as described - we use 0/1/2/4/6 not 8 for eagle(it could be argued the 8 for eagle rewards lower caps too much)- and other times we use the 18 point-

-1/0/1/3/5 version which I prefer. Both give you the same amount of points short or over your quota but there is something about the negative point for double and worse that messes with heads. Look at it this way. If Joe 13 handicap reaches his quota on the 12th hole in the 36 point game he can do no worse than even. He hit his quota and cannot go backwards. But in the 18 point game he can still come up short of his quota because he loses a point for double and worse. Math is done the same to figure quota. 36 less you handicap or 18 less your handicap.
