Best Private clubs in Charleston/Mt. Pleasant

Moving to Charleston in the fall looking for the top private courses in the Charleston/Mount Pleasant area. I’m coming from a championship course so conditions/course setup means a lot to me especially the greens firm and fast. I’ve heard of bulls bay (wait list) and a few others but are looking for the area experts to weigh in. Preferably within 20-25 minutes of the area, nothing too far out.

I took a tour of Bulls Bay and Briars Creek, I got to see more of the course at Bulls Bay than Briars. Loved the course at Bulls Bay, dues were better than Briars and Bulls seemed to be a lot more lively, seemed to me a younger crowd. The practice facilities at both looked amazing. Briars is getting ready to close for a bit I think (or maybe they just closed) to fix a few things (no assessments). I know they will be redoing their clubhouse shortly, their clubhouse is a bit too small. While Briars seemed to be an older crowd, it did feel great to be out there, you felt like you were in the middle of nowhere.

Welcome to coming down here, good living for sure. As for which club, really depends on what you are looking for in terms of solo/family membership, how much you care about social/networking aspect, course style (older/newer, prefer to walk or ride?), and value for the $. There is no one universal best but think Country Club of Charleston checks most except for value. Yeamans is generally considered the best Charleston area (non Kiawah) golf course.

One word of caution, while there is a direct link between membership cost and general course conditions, the climate down here must be tough because every course has experienced some major issue with conditions over the past 3-4 years.

You would be joining Yeamans as some type of limited member, cost is reasonable but can only golf like May-Aug subject to certain times/days being blacked out. Also you won't have full use of clubhouse, grill, and parking lots. Basically you're treated like a second class citizen. That said if your primary reason to join is to play golf at a great old school layout where it's largely about width and angles, you'll rarely lose a golf ball, and is best experienced walking then it's totally fine (meaning you go there to play and that's it). Not sure what it takes to become a full member, if even possible, but needless to say it's a select group.

Do keep in mind depending on where you live traffic around rush hour will be an issue.

Good gosh I would never join a private club that treated me as second class or gave me blackout dates. Find somewhere else.

thing is yeamans is made up of a community as its members. It’s like less than 100 I believe? They allow summer memberships for certain months that is still pretty pricey but like mentioned above, it’s not the same as the full member deal haha

Forever Changing at this point.......

I bet you would if the price/course was right.
