My putter blade opens on the way back and stays open at strike. So what’s the fix?

Recommended Posts

I have been working with my Blast Golf on my Provoto putting platform as the rains continue. Blast tells me that I am consistently OPEN at impact. I have moved the ball up in my stance and tried putters with different amounts of toe hang as well as a face balanced model. Anyone have a drill they can recommend or a putting aid that might help? Thanks.

Try placing a pencil on the ground parallel to the putter face. Make a stroke and try to make the pencil roll straight.

Are you missing it right (assuming right handed)? Or Is it starting on your intended line? If so another thing to maybe check is your setup/aim... putter face could be pointed left at setup then relatively open at impact, yet still square to target line.

It's not the putter - it's your setup/stroke. Could be your concept, could be you are under twisting the shaft, or maybe you are lengthening/shortening your swing radius, . . .

For $40 can get a visio putting template which trains one to swing on a pizza slice arc - quickly learn to adapt setup/stroke to keep it on the arc.

I am opening the blade but never getting it back to square. Thanks for all the ideas. I am going to get the Putting Arc out to eliminate fanning it open and I am going to schedule a lesson. I think I see the line as being to the right of the hole even though I am using lines on the ball and putters with flange lines. Then I shove the putter down that line that is misaligned.

Putter doesn't move in a straight line - doing that is definitely going to cause opening/closing of the face - think pizza slice.

I've had a similar issue, and for me it was due to tension in my hands/arms

ie. hands and arms rotate to let the face open going back, but too much tension in the forward swing stops the face from releasing back to square at impact

When I focus on relaxing my right bicep and tricep muscles at address and backswing it helps everything flow through to impact, could be worth a try

Probably mental

forget about thinking about the stroke and focus more on where you want the ball to go.... hit many very short 2 footers but dead straight and be very specific which grass blade its gonna roll over on the lip of the cup. You will feel yourself warm up and become very accurate after 10 minutes or so. I actually prefer to hit the ball agaisnt something on the green like a book cause who wants to bend over or slow down by having to get ball out the cup a lot lol...

This will sharpen up your targeting system

Can't figure how to like my own posts

100% guarantee to stop your issue:

Put a Sharpie line all the way around your ballPlace your ball on the practice green with the stripe on the ball on top of the ball and all the way around to the bottom of the ballDo not putt to a hole or a spot, just putt solely to watch the ball roll using your normal strokeNotice how much the line wobbles and shakes and contortsNow figure out a way -- any way -- to stop the ball from wobbling and make it roll end over end to where the line does not wobble or wobbles only a tiny bit. And make sure you are not putting to a target while doing this. You are simply rolling the ball just to watch it roll.It took me all of 5 minutes to figure out how to stop my ball from wobbling and roll it end-over-end, but I had to make some significant adjustments to the way I putt in order to do so. My resulting set-up is "interesting," but highly effective. You don't need to copy me, certainly, but the process I went through is rock-solid and repeatable. I've helped many others with the same issue.Final Step is: Figure out how to take your new ball-rolling mastery and get it to match up with how your eyes see putts, since the changes you have to make to make the ball roll end-over-end may have been as a result of some moderate to severe adjustments in ball-position, eye-position, forearm orientation, stance alignment, etc.ENJOY IMMENSELY BETTER, MORE CONSISTENT PUTTING!This video is not to show how to putt, I include it to show how I was able to get the ball to roll end-over-end. I used to putt like Nicklaus for years, kind of crouched over and "open" at address, and there was just no way that I, personally, could get that address position to work for me to roll the ball end-over-end consistently, so I had to make some adjustments, and this is what I found worked for me.

Best of luck to you on your journey!

Op. Try the one Handed putt drill ( right hand for righty ). Kind of forces you to release it. In my opinion there’s nothing wrong with fanning it open going back. So long as you release it fully.

obee also gave you good tip on seeing the ball roll true . Combine the two. Line on the ball and one hand drill. Should show you how the release is supposed to be. I suspect you’ll adjust the amount of fan open on the backswing automatically once you see this work. Sometimes if I’m fighting this , I’ll put both hands on the grip and let my left hand fly limp , as in not really gripping it. Forced you to add some right hand to release the toe. What causes this for me is a dominant left hand. It tends to hold the face off.
