Trend of modern golf being more public than private

To keep these bucket list courses at bucket list quality costs money to run. With the amount of play they get they need to first make a profit. Then they need to provide a product that will meet/exceed visitors expectations. It is not cheap to keep greens and fariways in good shape when they get about 2-300 golfers a day.

Or to keep the high quality experience they don't have that many golfers in a day. Hence the higher price.

Exactly. I don't begrudge those places for doing so as that is what people are willing to pay. I just don't happen to be one of them, lol.

I am pretty cheap when it comes to golf.. At least locally. When I travel I might splurge a bit, but most of my vacations I try to relax.. My golf game does not like to relax though.... I did splurge 2 years ago and spend a week in Monterey and Santa Cruz golfing all week. It definitely lived up to the hype. Those splurging are far and few between.

I'm cheaper yet...well, semi poor to put it bluntly. I have a wife and kids and don't get to golf as much as I'd like. However, it isn't going to stop me from playing bucket list courses. I mentioned earlier that playing off season, twilight hours, staying at an Airbnb, etc. will save a lot of money on some of these places.

The memories of playing bucket list courses are enriched when you're poor and think about the money you saved playing them. I never look back and think...man playing in pants instead of shorts really ruined that moment for me.

The real work is building and expanding your social network. Realistically, the only valid “drop the coin” opportunities are your Top 100 YOU CAN PLAY. There’s a hell of a lot of golf out there being played on courses where my last name would never get me a membership. So, I make friends... and then someday get invited. Doesn’t always work but sometimes you meet some cool a** people in the word and they happen to be members at a Top 100
