2020 Italian Open

I caught a few of the highlights yesterday.

This has to be one of the worst courses I've ever seen used for a European Tour event, let alone a tournament with the pedigree of the Italian Open. Flat, dull, pylons everywhere.

Having played a fair bit of golf in Italy, I can testify that they have much better courses to offer than this.

Hopefully this is a one and done visit to this particular venue.

Not sure I follow.  Are you saying it would be better to have no tournament this week than playing here?

No. It was good as it was. Not saying more than that if Italian open comes back to the Lago di Garda region some year in the future I hope its played on the Gardagolf venue. Best course for Italian open I have seen, watching TV.

Ah ok.  Just wanted to be clear.  I think I missed the year they played Gardagolf, so I will look forward to it.

So how many fighter jets have you picked off on an approach shot there? Hitting one plane would have been better than a HIO! :classic_biggrin: My home course in high school had a decommissioned Nike missile site on the outside perimeter of the course.

We were able to to go down into the abandoned launch batteries as they were wide open for a while. Western PA back in those days (early 80's) had multiple closed Nike missile sites in the area. That site was remediated some time later and is now a giant paved over parking lot for a local business.

Story time and threadjack aside I learned about this particular rule way back in my high school days. On the 2nd hole on our home course a giant low hanging power line came into play from the right side of the hole and crossed the fairway heading towards the green. Was playing a practice round with some teammates. Hit an approach shot from the right rough that nicked the power line and ended up close to the hole (yes I missed the putt).

None of use knew the rule and we continued on. Told our coach what happened after the round and he gave us a teaching moment on the rule. Glad it didn't take place in a real match. Our high school matches at that point and time were 5 simultaneous 9 hole stroke and match play events. Team low stoke play total received an extra match point. I would have been double penalized on the same hole under different scoring formats. It's all 5 player stroke play matches now.

Ha! I have not had a strike (thankfully). I am told that it has happened. The approach to the runway dependent on the wind, sees them come in pretty much over a short par 3 which is where I believe the hit took place.

Back to the thread. Cantor stopped doing what was so effective in the previous 3 and a half rounds. He stopped engaging with his caddy and allowing him to keep him optimistic and cheerful and thus relaxed. His caddy, up to that point had played a blinder keeping 'Grumpy' onside. After the duffed chip Cantor did a number on himself and lost. Even if the golfing fates hadn't allowed McGowan to chip in from the sand, Cantor would still only have scraped into the play-off and with that mindset, would likely have lost. Hopefully he will learn, I like his swing.
