Should Electronic equipment be regulated in golf?

Oh, absolutely.  The only thing that keeps me off the tour is the lack of Trackman availability.

It would be the equivalent of having today’s race car drivers only be allowed to operate similar vehicles to 75 years ago. It wouldn’t be as entertaining. 
 

We can have a conversation about how much rangefinders or launch monitors help a player in modern days but the idea that they should be banned? Its so far from a majority opinion that it’s a bit of a lost cause.

Never once did I say that electronic equipment SHOULD be banned or outlawed. I'm saying that if distance is one of the biggest and hottest issues in golf why not look at every aspect of the situation, which is equipment optimization and its affect on modern day touring pros that's all....but it looks like we can't talk about it because everyone is a comedian....

At any tournament you can go down the rang and just about every touring pro has his launch monitor or trackman. Apparently everyone accept this as normal and no one want to talk about the affect this have on distance. The Tour trucks and the Optimization of equipment is one of the reasons for longer distance on tour......IMO

This thread's general topic matter originated when the "forums section" here at WRX was etchings on a cave wall. 

 

 

The “activity” section was a guy standing next to a tree selling rocks on sticks to build muscle.

The “store” section was a guy standing outside a cave selling pelts as towels and sleeves of round rocks for balls.

The “classified” section was full of small headed clubs and square wheel push carts for sale.  

The "support" section was for cave people with marital trouble.

You don't think that guys that play for millions of dollars should do all they can to give themselves the absolute best equipment? This is as normal at a Tour stop as an accountant using a calculator.

My point exactly, they live and breath with these numbers. I don't care one way or the other but I do think it should be talked about when comparing players of old to modern day players. I also think that before we change golf balls and clubs everything should be looked at.....besides I never hear anyone bring up swing aids (electronics) in the distance debates.

I really think the trend towards big hitters was starting before radars became common. And, even if the USGA dials back distance, the big hitters will still be the big hitters, and everybody will still be trying to maximize their equipment to hit it longer. There is no doubt that the Trackmans, and other radars have helped guys make equipment choices to hit the ball longer, but DJ, and I'm sure others, have used technology to help with their wedge game.

These electronics has helped the modern player tremendously! Launch monitors came out at the same time as the big head drivers. People are so use to hearing about them everyday in commercials and advertising that they just accept them as modern day equipment. If anything is dialed back, the pros will get every yard out of the new stuff....I'm not saying that it's good or bad but lets not pretend that it's not a big factor in distance....

You do realize that top tier tour players, especially someone extremely sensitive to equipment like Tiger can eyeball their trackman numbers to within a few 100rpm's of spin, few mph's of ball speed, and a degree or two of launch angle...without the equipment.

 

I can assure you a tour player could get very close to 100% optimized on equipment even without the trackman.

Joe Lacava only gives raw aka unadjusted numbers to Tiger because Tiger feels out the shot in regards to the slope/wind/lie. I’d say he’s pretty dialed, along with plenty of other pros (in the 100s)

Actually, in your first post you said :” should we think about eliminating (ie: banning) them?”

,I just think that it seemed like you were implying that we should think about eliminating them. And then you compared today’s players to players from the past.
