Do the majority of your shots come from 3 clubs?

That may be true of your course, but that isn't the case with every course.

I never said it was, but I’ve played plenty of courses that aren’t driver wedge that play much easier than course that are.

Driver wedge doesn't necessarily mean the game is easier. How many times do you see fairly consistent long knockers that dread under 100 yard approach shots? Directional misses are slimmer margins with wedges but distance control can be tough.

This is very golfer AND course specific.

For me, the answer is, "No," I'm simply too short off the tee to hit wedges frequently on par 4's. I'm usually hitting 4h to 7h/8i on most par 4's and laying up and hitting wedge on most par 5's.

It's actually nice, because I get to hit such a nice variety of clubs.

Half the card is short game, a metal, either driver or fairway is good for a dozen off the tee box. That's 2/3 by default. That's why GIR matters but not near as much as good wedge, putter & tee ball skills. Scratch player averages 10 greens. I do that now and am not near scratch. And yes I do spend too much time with an iron in my hand and not enough with the key three.

Second this.

I’ve spent most of my time in the past 6 months working on driver, wedge, putter, and got my hdc from 16 down to 11.
My goal is to get down to single digit by year end, but it seems like im running out of time (and rounds). Im on track tho.
With that said, those are the clubs that I most often use in a round.

After tracking with Garmin this golf season I hit about 78% of my shots a round with driver, 54 wedge and putter.

I tend to use my 54 for anytime I miss green and a lot of my home course if I hit a drive well I have a 54 in to the green. When I looked at this stat it almost makes sense to spend the majority of my practice time honing in my wedge game, driving and obviously putting. Maybe only spend a handful of balls a practice session on irons? Just found it very interesting. Anyone else have similar findings?

Same here, mate.

I think this is the modern game’s success formula: driver+wedge+putter.

For the pros, it’s all about driving the ball for miles and have a short wedge onto the greens then putt it out.

For the ams, it’s also about driving the ball straight and saving strokes with up-and-downs.

If I play a short course, it's almost always driver, sedge, putter. I don't belong to a club, so I can vary the courses I play so I get a variety. If you enjoy playing where you are playing, stay there. If you want to use your full bag, move to a longer course. Your scores might go up, but your hcp shouldn't be affected too bad unless it's a long AND hard course.

Typical round of home course, average score 84

33 putts

7 Holes where I always hit driver + 2 depending on conditions.

2 x 3 wood tee shots

3 x 5 wood tee shots

Par 3's- 3 wood, 6 iron, 5 iron, 7 iron

Par 4 approaches- 8-G-22hi-9-P-22hi-G-P-22hi-5.

Par 5 approaches- wood+sw; wood+pitch; wood+gw; wood+pitch

6 GIR's per round, so 12 additional wedge shots between gap, sand, and lob.

I have thought about these things before but this thread has really made me think about the ramifications of my home course and the tees I choose to play. I am playing the tips currently. If I moved up a tee, I would be taking a club or two off of every approach, and suddenly hitting many more G/S's into greens (and PW, but I consider my PW to be a 10-iron and use it as such) BUT I DO NOT HAVE SIGNIFICANT SCORE IMPROVEMENT

This tells me that my long game is a strength, it makes up for a 2000 yard difference between blacks and blues. OR it tells me my 150 and in game is where I am tossing away strokes. 6 greens a round is not good, and neither is 33 putts. But the problem becomes that when I play, my fun comes from the tips, playing a variety of shots for challenge. Playing from the blues means I get to be disappointed flubbing wedges, and unfortunately I do not have access to a good practice facility. To become a better player I should play up and practice. To be a happy player I want to play tips.

Fantastic Thread
