New Iron delivery supposed to be coming on Tuesday!

 

The ‘23 P790 & P770 are really good clubs, but I’ve been dealing with some performance issues with them.

 

Biggest problem is not the heads, it’s the Project X Rifle 6.0 shafts. The PX 6.0 definitely plays more like X-Stiff, and with playing them +1”, they feel extremely heavy and stiff.

 

That’s led to my Irons being very low launch and low spin this season, and the P770’s are pretty low spinning to begin with.

 

I’ve been considering getting Irons with lighter shafts, higher launch, higher spin, and a little more distance and forgiveness. Found a set that will hopefully check the boxes! 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Did you consider just reshafting? Or did the inner club ho just pounce on the opening to buy new gear?😂

Great question Mike. There’s a few layers to that answer.

 

1) I’ve never had good experiences getting clubs re-shafted. I tried getting a couple of 4-irons and Driving Irons re-shafted, and the results were terrible.

 

Probably just haven’t found the right shop/club builder, but I have very low confidence in trying that again.

 

2) Because I have to get my iron shafts extended & bent upright, the cost for new shafts, plus the repair charges for all the alterations/adjustments probably wouldn’t be worth it.

 

3) The Club Ho in me is definitely excited to try a different set of irons to see if they will be a better fit overall!

I totally get not having confidence in a club builder that has not done a great job previously, not easy finding good ones anymore.

Exactly.

 

I’m actually mystified with everyone on WRX that make changing shafts sound so easy. A lot of people make it sound as easy as changing grips, Lol.

 

Oh well, countdown for the new iron delivery is on…can’t wait!!

Yeah, I tried years ago to replace a shaft. Before the internet so no YouTube instructional videos to fall back on…two words, complete disaster 😂. There is a real skill to it and some people have that knack. Found a great club builder that I used for years but he passed a few years ago and I haven’t found an anybody else. There are a few that I know are excellent by reputation but they are all almost a 2 hour drive from where I live.

Shipping between Canada and the U.S. can be tricky. Customs fees seem like they’ve gone up substantially over the last 3-4 years…Ugh!!

I never change shafts anymore, just buy new irons with the shafts i want....much easier!

New Irons came in yesterday, and I’m back on Team Srixon!!

 

I’ve been thinking about getting irons with lighter shafts, more forgiveness, and more distance, and overall I think the ZX5 checks the most boxes for me.

 

I had combo sets previously of ZX5 with Z785 and ZX7’s, but a fitter had given me incorrect advice on specs at that time, and I didn’t get a chance to fully get a feel for Srixon irons.

 

My finalists were the ZX5, Mizuno Hot Metal Pro, and Wilson D9 Forged…but the ZX5 felt and looked the best to me, and performed the best in simulator testing. Also considered the MKII’s, but there wasn’t a major difference in performance. We’ll see how it goes!

I always wondered what could have been if I had Srixon Irons with proper specs. It's like getting a second chance with the girl of my dreams...can't wait to HIT IT (I mean hit them)!! 😉🤣

Yeah, I had the 4-6 ZX5 combo’d with Z785 and ZX7 before, and all 3 of those are fantastic clubs!

 

Excited to try the full set of ZX5 though for sure. I estimate I’ll gain about 1 club of distance vs my previous P770’s, and the forgiveness gains should be pretty substantial too. Time will tell!! 😎👌🏽

I thought about going with MKII, but I found the performance was very similar.

 

So if performance is almost identical, then it came down to looks, and cost. Personally I prefer the look of the OG’s, and the cost was obviously much cheaper.
 

Pretty easy decision all round once I decided to pull the trigger on new irons! 😎😎

Another addition to the bag today!

 

With the ZX5 PW being 44*, I’ve been trying to figure out my wedge setup. My preferred setup last season was 52 and 58 paired with the 46* P770 PW. But between 44 to 52 it would just be too big of a gap.

 

So I’m going to try out this CBX Zipcore 48* wedge to bridge the gap, and will test out 44-48-52-58.

 

The CBX shape looks very similar to the ZX5, so should be a good transition between the power of the ZX5 and the finesse of the RTX 6 Zipcore!

 

If I end up wanting to go back to 3 wedges, I’ll end up bending the 52* to 50* or buying a new 50*…we’ll see how it goes!

Nice! I’ve been playing the modus 105 S shafts for a couple of years now with my PXGs and absolutely love them. I’m getting another set of irons in the spring and unless something works better in the fitting I plan on using the 105s again. I think you’ll be very happy with this setup. Congrats!

Yeah, the Modus3 Tour 105 S feels fantastic so far, just from testing on the Simulator and waggles/swings in the house.

 

The smoothness of the Modus3 Tour 120, but the lighter shafts feel like they'll be easier to swing and won't try to get after it as much, which should lead to better control.

 

I feel really good about my current setup....by far the best I've felt about any setup going into the start of a season!

 

The only question marks will be if my custom Nike Method putter will Win that spot over my Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K Double Wide, and if my Paradym X Driver will beat out the Rogue ST Max. Both the Odyssey and the Rogue ST Max have been the best I've owned in those spots, so will hold on to them until the Spring when I can test the new stuff more extensively.

This could almost be a Hard Knocks style documentary as these clubs battle it out for a spot on the roster. Will it be the undrafted walk-on Nike? Or the highly touted college superstar Odyssey? On the next Hard Knocks (BallerNate edition)…

Haha...indeed!!

 

That's why I'm on a Nike kick right now. My Nike Method putter is winning the battle for the top putter spot in my bag, and it made me curious about trying other Nike clubs.

 

I think they were ahead of their time with equipment design, but we'll see if any other Nike clubs will win the battle to get into my bag for this season! 😎😎
