San Diego area: Maderas Golf Club etc.

going down to the San Diego area.

Have heard really good things about Maderas Golf Club and booked a time. under further digging, found out it's a Johnny Miller design. Personally never liked any courses of his I've played, but willing. Any thoughts?

Also, anyone familiar with the Singing Hills Resort down that way? There are 2 courses, Willow Glen and Oak Glen.  Any info would be appreciated. And maybe how they compare to Maderas.

Thanks

Big difference between Maderas and other two courses. Maderas is more “high end” daily fee with limited membership while singing hills is more muni daily fee with two good courses with some good holes and some horrible holes but a fun time regardless. Maderas greens are probably bette right now condition wise but the county is doing spring aeration right now so conditions are subject to change

I'm not a fan of the layout of Maderas, but it's a beautiful course always in top condition.

Willow Glen at Sycuan is the slightly longer and tougher of the two courses.  A little more memorable layout as well.  As DOT said, they're both public daily fee courses, so the conditions aren't nearly as nice as Maderas.

If the wind comes up on Maderas, you will get the full effect of Maderas abuse.  A few Par 4's are down wind, and nearly driveable.  But into the wind, will be a grunt and groan if you can't manipulate ball trajectory low.  I agree with @Hack Daddy Mt Woodson could be the poor man's, but it will test your level of self-control, as it's a target course where driver must stay in the bag, or else... 😛

Nothing like checking the ego at Mt. Woodsen and laying up off the tee because you're not sure of the bounce. Always a fun time there.

Everytime someone boasts about being a stick (that I've just met), I offer up a round at Mt. Woodson. I always say "it's really short, you'll enjoy it."

We play. Then I never hear from them again.

I've done something similar at Mt Woodson, as well as the short 6700+ Arrowood GC in Oceanside.  Both are great courses for a game too. 😛   I've met a few big hitter pvt club buddies at Arrowood; it's quite entertaining. 🙂

On Arrowood I increase bet on the #6 driveable Par 4, then figure my opponent for +1 on Par 3 #8, Par 5 #9 is usually worth +1 off the 2nd shot, +1 on #10, +1 on Par 3 #11, and when the wind comes up #16 is a bear, it can be worth +2, and #17 has consequences worth +1-2.. lol  Damn, I love this game.😇

Catch someone with a bipolar mental game and 16 could easily be +3 or 4. 😂😂😂😂😂

@Hack Daddy Yep.  I am usually around even with some of the guys I've played a game with at Arrowood; till #16 and #17, even #18.  I always play for par on the last 3 holes.

I've watched more than a few big hitters not take into account the effects of being elevated on #16 tee, and the wind hits the ball as soon as it's above trees.  If they find the fairway, 2nd shot often ends up short, in the drink cause of misclub and the wind.  I like it when the pin is far right behind the front mound, and my opponents 2nd shot finds that back bunker.  Most of the time my opponent aims at the pin, and his ball runs out ending up in the drink on the right side of the green.

Then we get to #17, and an errant hook has them dropping near OB, forcing a layup, and then a misjudged shot short of the green and his ball rolls back down the hill, or he's long on the pin, chips back and goes off the front.  Then the finishing hole, where many misclub hitting into the green and find the drink or long in back bunker.

Those 3 holes win the money. 😛  Reason I tell good friends, I won't play money games with them, because I am not a 😇 guy when competing.

Flying out to Anaheim next month with my wife - I'll only have time for one round while there and have narrowed it down to Maderas. Understanding that it's still a drive but we're planning on making a day of it. Probably add an evening round at Goat Hill Park also.

Change my mind?

Played Maderas today … what a beautiful course. It’s tough — but also pretty fair. There are places to bail out and scoring opportunities even for mid-high handicappers like me. I also had a couple bad drives turned into good drives thanks to very generous bounces from the big banking that some holes have.
