The last set I made a combo of were Titleist 712 CB/MB.  I was playing a full set of MBs, and noticed that I was getting the same carry among some clubs at the top of my bag.  I confirmed it on a launch monitor, my 3 and 4 were only about 5 yards past my 5iron, while my 5iron down maintained a consistent gap.  I could still hit the 6 and hit my target a high percentage of the time so I went with CB in the 3/4/5 and was able to create the expected gaps at the top of the bag.

I asked my fitter what was going on, he said as my swing naturally progressed I wasn't launching the blades high enough to create the carry or decent angle needed to get the correct gaps.  He also sees this in players that can't generate the ball speed needed.  His suggestion was keep the shafts I was playing and go with a higher launching head, or keep the heads and change shafts in everything.  I took the route with the fewest changes as I still hit 6i-down fairly well.

A launch monitor is your friend for gapping and selecting which club to transition at....for me it was after 5-iron.

So hard to do though?

Most fitters only have a 7-iron

I always feel like above seven iron makes or breaks the set

KZG Forged 2-M 3-6 bent 1* weak with KZG blades 7-PW. I love my 7 iron so much I bought a 4 and 5. Still looking for a 6.

Was checking my gaps today after getting my irons bent yesterday and it's just about perfect. I am so damn happy with the Kuro Kage shafts. I have so much to learn, but if you can think it, these can hit it.

I have a couple combo sets.  One is a Titleist 735cm set.  That set is 3-7 CB, 8-PW blades.  Lots of guys say they'd rather have the 7 as a blade too, but I'm ok as they are. I love both ends of this set. Truly great and underated irons.  Long irons go high, short irons don't.

My other combo set is an Adams 3 set combo I put together myself:

CB3: 3, 4, 5

CB1: 6, 7

Pro Black MB: 8-PW

All with RIP Tour 115 shafts.  Bent to 5* loft gaps, which didn't take much bending with this setup.  I mostly just play the 5-PW.

For me, combo sets make a lot of sense. I want the forgiveness in the longer irons.  But I don't need any help launching the short irons.   I take it a step further and make my hybrids part of the combo set too. I play small 3 and 4 hybrids with the same shafts as my irons, at the same lengths and lofts as the irons they replace.

Me to a T. Exactly where my head is at and the 7i is the complicated one. With modern lofts, it’s basically a 6i? Haha

I'm actually quite surprised at the flight difference between my I500 4i and I210 4I even with the I500 being 2* stronger, Peak height seems a good chunk higher which surprised me.  Spin seems fine so I can live with it, haven't tried to hit it low yet.

If you are open to the Direct To Consumer path, give the following a look:

Ben Hogan Player’s Combo: 4-7 iron PTxPro, 8-PW Icon

^best looking irons out there right now IMO, especially the Icons. Limited shaft options and configurations keep prices low ($785/set)

^purest feeling of the bunch in my demo testing of CB models, unlimited shaft options (variable upcharge)

Sub70: 639 MB/CB ($644)

^cheapest option and incredible customer service, unlimited shaft options (variable upcharge)

I bought mine used, but they seem to be the perfect setup for me:

G400 5-7 irons (5 iron has an Alta CB graphite shaft)

i200 8-9, PW, UW (8 iron is 2* strong, 9 iron is 1* strong, PW & UW are standard)

I maybe would have transitioned at the 6/7, but I haven't experience any problems with how the original owner did it...

I was playing a set of Mizuno MP-69s last year (all MBs). Shot my lowest round ever with them, but when the game wasn't there it was pretty frustrating at times. This winter during the lockdowns I found a full 4-PW set of TM 2011 Tour Preferred MBs. Managed to find a 4i CB, 5,6,7i MC (think Daniel Berger) to put together a good flow [thank you WRXer George from Chi-town]. Golf is sadly shutdown right now but I got 10-11 rounds in with them before that happened - here's my take on the topic:

I started this year with 4 CB, 5-6 MC, 7-Pw MB. But I actually ended up loving the MBs so much I added the 6i in recently. It's purely preference and if you know a certain gapping works or are on a tighter budget that's understandable. That being said if it's doable I would highly recommend getting say 4-7 in the CB/MC style and then a full 4-PW set in the MBs.

For me, I love the feel/look/offset of MBs but having this setup allows me to add more blades into my combo set for those stretches where I'm striking it well, and vice versa take a few out when I'm not (aka. bone rattle syndrome). It's a personal thing but if you're thinking of building a combo set you're probably good enough to strike your 8-PW range be build something that gives an option of forgiveness at the top if that's possible. It's worth it for me because MBs are a ton of fun when your swing is there. Final comment is to check out used options (cheaper) and try get a combination that are of the same product line/year for loft gapping.
