PXG original 0211 irons vs DC 0211

  • 3 weeks later...

Ended last year with the original 0211s with MMT shafts, started this year with Ping G425s with stock AWT 2.0. I had a flair up with some thumb and elbow pain so moved to the 2021 0211 irons with MMT. For me the newer version is slightly longer (a few yards) but my dispersion seems much better. At $89 a club with a quality graphite shaft, and fast delivery (yes, shipping is a little costly) it was a easy decision. Compared to the Pings, this is my opinion, they sound a little better, are more compact but with forgiveness and my turf interaction is as good. My miss is toe side and the tungsten in the Pings helps a lot. Toe misses with the 0211s still don’t cause a significant loss of distance and hold the target line well enough for my game.

My dad had a set of the original irons for a while and I hit them a few times. I'm playing the new version and he's hit them a few times.

The new version is about a club longer. Down to differences in loft and shaft length off standard spec. From just eyeing it I would say the difference in height and spin is enough to notice but not really enough to make a difference unless you're already have trouble with holding greens with the original version or are borderline.

Forgiveness is comparable.

So it basically comes down to whether or not you want to gain roughly a club in distance.

Are these forgiving?  What would you compare them to?  SIM2 Max?  G425? 710s? ZX5?

Thank you and stay safe.

I tried the ZX5s before I bought the 0211 DC. They are definitely a little more forgiving than the ZX5s on toe hits (my miss). Less drop off in distance on all mishits really but I just experience more of those.

The 0211 DCs are not as forgiving as anything with a Ping G on it. I haven't hit a Taylormade GI iron since 2017 M2 but I would more than safely assume it's not as forgiving as Sim 2 Max.

I would compare forgiveness more to something like a Callaway Apex. (Haven't hit the 21s but played all 3 previous versions at some point)

Would say the original P790 is another iron I've played similar in terms of forgiveness.

They fall somewhere in between true game improvement irons and players distance irons.

I agree with Nosedive.  Comparing to clubs I have or have had, the original 0211 fits in the same forgiveness category as the Ping i200 and Srixon Z565.  The PXG sole fit my swing better than the Srixon.  Ping G series are more forgiving, albeit at the cost of bulk and feel.

The original 0211’s had more like players-distance iron specs with pretty typical playing lengths and closer to traditional lofts (45* PW).

The new 0211’s are a full on game improvement design.

Had both, sold both

They both look good, have good feel, and are forgiving. My biggest issue was the swingweights. My 5-6 irons were D1 my 7 was C8, 8-9-PW were all different with my 0211 DC.

I had requested when I ordered them that they are all as close to D1 as possible. Even went with heavier shafts. They always felt inconsistent.

I’m sure the more expensive forged models can be customized more because of the weight screws.

Moved on to a set of Cobra King forged tec and these are all spot on. Very happy with the change....

I have played the '21 0211's for a little more than four months now and am extremely impressed with their performance.  For me, they look and feel great.  Plus they are long and give me confidence in my iron game.  I have not had any problem holding greens.  Last season, I had a set of g410's before moving to the original 0211's.  I find the new 0211's as forgiving as the G410's but look better, feel softer, and have better turf interaction.  In my experience, the new 0211's do everything that the originals did, but are slightly longer and more forgiving. The forgiveness really shines in the long irons.  They are extremely easy to hit.

I haven't played the 2021 0211's, but my 2019 ones (bought in April 2020) have left a bit to be desired for me. there was the honeymoon phase, but my iron game has consistently been horrible since I got them, and I noticed a couple weeks ago that one my irons has a small crack in the low toe. a couple guys think it's as if the metal folded a bit there, but I digress.

I've consistently had inconsistent distances, particularly in the long irons. they're super easy to get way up high, but the difference between a flushed shots with my 4 and 5 irons can be 20 yards or more without switching clubs. (in extreme cases.)

In their defense, this could be an illusion caused by the fact that they provide figuratively zero feedback. They hide your mishits far too well.
