I’ve been thinking how I could make something similar....I take it you’re pulling the adapter by pulling a screw inserted into the end rather than wrecking the ferrule??

Ya, I use a screw from the driver and a washer. Forgot to mention to put some tape on the shaft where it goes through the spreader, just to ensure the shaft doesn't get scratched.

Just be sure to use a file to smooth out the metal after it has been cut, otherwise the shaft will get scratched

I forgot to ask. What size drill bit did you use and was there a specific place to drill that you found was best.

It only hurts once, except golf it hurts a lifetime

I finally got the chance to try it out and it works perfectly.  I grinded off the metal rod that turns the spreader and used a ratchet to turn it instead.  thax for the idea @Fgav2402

I'm glad it worked out for you. Its amazing what u can come up with when u are bored

Just bumping to give @Fgav2402 a 👍

Of all the DIY extractors I liked this idea the best.  $15 for the brake spreader, some elbow grease, and you have something simple, effective, adjustable, and small for storage.

I went with a 3/8" hole on the tip side, opened it to about .400" (10+mm) on the vise side, sawed tapered slots and grinded to round all edges. Haven't needed the extra little slotted plate.  For fat shafts it could even just fit in the taper without sitting all the way down as you can spread it jammed against the vise and hosel (just tape the graphite shaft and don't jam onto it... iron pic below).

Thanks!

Simple Diy Shaft puller I made using a car brake spreader tool and a simple wooden clamp.

Brake spreader bought on amazon,

drilled a 10mm hole through the brake spreader and cut a groove down to meet the hole. The clamp is very basic, just 2 pieces of wood with bolts going through.

I use 2 rubber shaft clamps and a screw with washers on the adapter when pulling.

There are two washers in the spreader tool that I added to make it more stable, they are pointed out in the pictures.

I also use an extracting plate if pulling hybrids or fixed hosel woods.

Iv been pulling shafts with this for a while and I'm getting straight pulls and haven't had a tip failure.

Thanks for this.

I got my spreader yesterday and will be drilling and cutting this weekend. As an inveterate McGiverer, I love it!

I just finished building my own version of this.  I bought the brake puller on Amazon.  Drilled two holes.  I used a dremel with a cutoff wheel to remove the tabs.  I used an angle grinder to widen the slots just a touch and debur.  My metal working skills aren't the best and it took some effort and probably an hour or two to finish it, but so far it has worked great!  I tested it on an old TP Mills putter, then an old 3 wood, then a friend's hybrid shaft where the adjustable adaptor broke off.  Worked great on all three!  I found it fairly awkward at first to know what to do with my hands and the first take I felt like I needed four hands.  I ended up starting by hitting the shaft with the torch for a bit.  Then setting the torch down.  Then I would use one hand to stabilize the puller so it doesn't fall to the side and the other to turn the gear.  If I need a bit more heat I stop and do that.  Then back to turning.  Once the head starts moving then I switch hands to turning the gear and catching the head.  Great idea, thanks for sharing!

I use a vice to hold it in place and an impact wrench to turn.  I did cut off the small metal metal rod so I could use the wrench without fear of it spinning and hitting me.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the setup.  I had put the rubber shaft clamp / club shaft into the vice.  Does that same vice hold grab the jaw from the gear puller as well?
