Because the locals bitched so much about the roads being closed they couldnt have F2 or F3 races to test the track and rubber it in. Only so much a safety car can do to "test" a track - nothing compares to the downforce of an F1 car.

 

FP2 has been smashing so far.

I couldn't care less about the circuit, or the delays, or anything else apart from I want to see some F1 cars racing. So I won't get over it, because things like this deprives us real fans of wanting to see racing, not some concert before the PRACTICE session takes place.

Just curious, do you complain when it rains and FP1 is cancelled? Stuff like this happens.

This is silly. The whole reason they brought another race to NA/USA is to attract more fans here, yet they're doing everything everything they can to make it as inaccessible as possible for US fans to attend/watch. 

 

On that note, i would like to thank the manhole cover for letting me watch some practice when i woke up this morning on the east coast. Can't believe they handed Carlos a penalty AND counting the parts against his allocation for that though. I understand rules are rules, but what a ridiculous rule. They've shown they don't mind bending the rules in the past, so why not now.

Yeah, I think a 10 place grid penalty for an epic failure of a new track seems excessive. It sounds like it was a structural failure on the area around the cover, so why is he getting penalized? 

 

I bet the next Vegas race (if there is one) will be in the afternoon vs 2am practice.

The FIA said this morning that - paraphrasing - they looked into waiving the penalty and would have done so if the other teams agreed but that one team strongly pushed back and said no, there should stil be a penalty.

I see absolutely no chance of this. 90% of the appeal on tv is the lights/lighting. Besides, no way locals would agree to let the road be closed in the middle of the day.

I would have loved to see the reaction if that one team had it happen to them... probably would have packed up everything and went home

They asked Zac Brown on TV and he agreed the penalty should have been waived. He said he would guess it was someone near them in the standings - seemed to imply it was Red Bull or Ferrari.

Interesting didn't see that. Wonder if it was Merc. Ferrari should be quick here and could have made up some ground for P2 in constructors

Then maybe move it up in the calendar. The F1 already admitted they had no idea Vegas was cold at night in November and it seems tire temps are going to be an issue.

Eh...really? FP2 went off without a hitch. 

 

I think the calendar spot is just fine. It runs the same weather risk as any other track. I was there a couple weeks ago and it was 60* overnight. You move it into the summer and you catch a 120* day - what then.

 

Looks like its the same calendar spot next year FWIW

If they can make it work, great. But if I paid to watch and FP1 is 8 minutes and FP2 is closed to spectators at 2am, I'd be pissed. Just saying.

I absolutely do not believe this and think its more of the anti-F1 Vegas media/social media BS.

 

Its a multi billion dollar industry, they spent $750M on the paddock build out alone. There is no chance they just woke up last week and said oh wait, its cold here? 

 

Pirelli brought their three softest compounds for the weekend - they knew darn well what the weather was going to be.

I’m just going to drop the full Brawn quote here, because I need y’all to believe that these words left his mouth:

“The one thing we hadn’t considered initially but the tyre company have dealt with is it gets very, very cold at night,” he told talkSPORT. “So when the race is happening, which is Saturday night, it has been known to drop down to three or four degrees.

Smallest "man hole" cover I've ever seen. 

 

It was a water shut off riser and cover. The riser somehow cracked and failed, the cover is bolted to the riser.

As has been widely reported it's for the European tv audience who makes up most of the F1 fans and viewing audience. <shrug>
