Lighter shafts can help lighten clubs.

One shaft option related to weight is the technology of ascending weight, AKA ascending mass. In these shafts, the longer iron shafts are lighter than the shorter iron shafts. This helps with clubhead speed and feel in 4i to 7i range or so.

Ping models featuring this include the steel AWT 2.0 (~ 98 grams in regular) and graphite Alta CB (~72 grams in regular).

In True Temper AMT series, AMT Red steel shafts range from 94-106 grams in weight (yes, this is more midweight than lightweight for golf shafts).

In graphite Recoil shafts, the Recoil 95 F3 (regular flex) shafts range between 90 and 96 grams.

Weight progression varies by shaft model. See shaft specs for details.

Today, club heads are similarly weighted.  However, graphite shafts can vary from 60 grams to 125g, steel goes to 134g.   All depends on how much you want to spend.  PXG has some lite setups.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses.
I should have mentioned that I don’t have a huge budget.
I currently have Wilson ci11 irons. Bought circa 2012 I think.
They’re fitted with stiff shafts, 1.5in longer as I’m 6’3”. I don’t know any more about the shafts, they’re stickerless and I don’t have the specs any more.

I don’t know if this helps, or is me imagining it, but I can “feel” the club head weight when I swing now. It feels heavy and a bit of an effort to move.
That may sound weird!

Thanks again

Take your 7 iron to a golf shop and find out what the swindweight is.

Also are the grips standard or midsize?  Look at the grip end.

It may be the extra length has the sw too heavy.

Some manufacturers have b weight heads that are lighter specifically for over length clubs. Mizuno is one and I'm sure their are others

Couldn't find the stock shaft for that particular model but the "C" series did tend to have lighter weight steel shafts.

Take the 7i and put it on a postal or kitchen scale to get the total static weight (in grams).  That should give us a rough idea of the shaft weight - which is one key part of the weight feel.

Then with that and finding the balance point of the club, we can estimate the swing weight (the other key factor in weight feel) with the following link.

No, it doesn't sound weird at all.  But it's just not all that helpful in pinning down exactly what the problem is (swing weight vs total weight vs both).    One thing you can do is some quick tests.    Choke up 1/2" hit some ball sand see if that helps.  Then try again but this time choke up 1" and, again, see how that feels.

I have the new Wilson D9's with regular flex Tensei shafts. Can't get much lighter than those I wouldn't think.

I looked on Wilson's shaft replacement table from The GolfWorks, and the Ci11 irons are not listed.

I did bump into our own Ci11 Review from early 2012. Review mentions True Temper TX Flighted steel as the stock shaft, but gives no weight info. Did mention that stock length was very long, with 36" shafts for PW and GW.

TX Flighted does not appear in the 2011 or 2012 GolfWorks components catalog. So, it's probably a proprietary model made for Wilson.

FWIW I have the Ci7's and they had the "TX-105" which was also a flighted offering. Probably a similar shaft

I quite like feeling the club head weight, as I think it helps. But if overall weight feels heavy maybe not too good. How about doing pushups and other exercise so you can "man handle" the clubs a bit? Have seen Bubba Watson pics with what looks like 4kg dumbells...no need for big weights. sorry, did not check your bio so no idea what age you are

Aren't 'player's clubs' lighter headed in general? Could look at that for the short irons and replace longer irons with hybrids. Replace ur irons shafts with lighter graphite ones.
