New Fairway woods

Recommended Posts

Now that I have my irons I think it’s time to get some new woods, I currently have 20 year old Golden Bear 3 and 5 woods. Anyone have good recommendations for a 3 and 5 wood, I can currently hit my 3 wood about 250-260 with stock regular stiff 20 year old Golden Bear shafts.

Reading this post, the same thought crossed my mind.  Not enough information.  Recommendations for what?   Which are mostly based on opinion by the one doing the recommending.  Furthermore, if I was whacking a 3 wood two fidy, wouldn't change a thing.

Here's an opinion.  Drop the 3 & 5 and bag a 4.  Simplification.

Sorry for the vagueness of the post. I'd ideally like to find relatively new technology woods. I have 20 year old woods and i know technology has really improved in the last 20 years for woods. I know with iron blades there's only so much you can do to tweak a hunk of metal but the woods are whole other ball of wax.

My driver goes 300, i'd like a 3 wood that goes around 265-270 and a 5 wood that goes 240

If you seriously hit your Golden Bear 3 wood 260, why in god's name would you change ?

I figure some new heads and modern shafts ill get better numbers. A 50 yard gap between driver and 3 wood seems a lot. I'd ideally like my driver around 300, 3 wood 260-270 and 5 wood 230-240.  Plus i gotta hit it pefect on the button to get it 250-260 i figure newer clubs i'll consistently get 250+ each time maybe smoother through the rough too.

I also sometimes go 3 wood and 7 wood since I rarely need the 5 wood in the bag, but the 7 wood is a nice 230 out of the rough club. I can also just as easily hit the 3 iron out of the cabbage around 220-230 also so not sure which woods I should have in the bag.

I think that this question would be better asked on the Equipment forum.

Barring that, go to a demo day and try out all the new FWs and go with the one that you like the best.

Most companies put out something good.  I would suggest looking at Tour Edge.  They have spent years making excellent (and hot) fairway woods.  You could go back five years and still have something excellent, for considerably less money than current new product.

Maybe you are posting in the wrong postcode. You are going to get fine and informed comment here on 'classic' clubs, mostly wooden heads and bladed irons of simple construction. Not so much comment on modern whiz-bangs.

Is there a particular model Tour Edge you’d recommend? I’m particularly fond of woods because of the fast fairways and greens in AZ I prefer to get the ball higher up and down and less roll using the woods vs irons. Never been a big fan of hybrids.

Exactly what I was thinking--- I do good now days to hit my modern M-6 driver 260 and that is when I absolutely nut it with a hard fairway. Most of the time it is in the 240 range. My V-Steel 3 wood max out about 200. Persimmon driver around 210 range and a persimmon 3 wood about 185 190 or so. Yep if I hit an old laminate Golden Bear 3 wood that far I would not even dream of changing unless it cracked or something

Basically what I do if you look at my signature. I think it was our fellow member Fellaheem or Scooter Mc Tavish that coined the phrase " a bag for all seasons"--- Yeah my old V-Steels are "antique" as far as metal woods are concerned but they fit my eye good and I hit them better than I do any modern metals.

Credit where credit is due.  Was Scooter that coined the "Bag for all Seasons" phrase.  IIRC.  And a FWIW, not relevant to the OP's request.  After acquiring a new 5 wood this season, find that I'm liking LW (50g) A flex shafts in my fairways.  Easy swingers.  Contemplating reshafting the V-Steel 7 wood with the same shaft.  The 7 is a bit more problematic than the other fairways for some reason.  Attribute it to the heavier shaft that I had around at the time when shafting it up.

If you can find them, the XCG7 or E8 would be good.  If you're a higher speed/spin player, there are Beta models of each.

One reason I'm suggesting going back that far is that you can find those for prices such that it would be like buying a component fairway wood, if you don't like the shaft.  Get the shaft out of there, put what you want in it and off you go.

Honestly, anything from that point forward would be awesome.  The EXS models have been well received.  The CBX were said to be kind of stupid, in a good way.  If you could find a CB Pro or CB Pro F2 in the loft and shaft you're interested in, that would be awesome.  These latter two came with real Speeder 757 and Kuro Kage shafts and were expensive when new.

For that matter, the E8 Beta came with real Rogue Silver shafts, and they used actual Diamanas in the Ex9 Tour clubs.  You can find HZRDUS shafts in the CBX models.

There's a whole lot to like in the Tour Edge world.

As a sample, check out 2nd Swing's website.  They have a fair bit of TE stuff.  (note: I'm not affiliated with them, just a customer)

Edit: Brother @BIG STU mentioned the V Steel.  This would be a worthy choice, also.  Even though they're nearly 20 years old, they're still viable in the modern game..

Yep I went that route with the lighter shafts in my 7 wood--- Ended up putting my UST Pro Force Gold 65 back in it and it does the trick for some reason. I guess my 3 wood is sotra heavy--- Aldila 65 Green regular--- The 3 wood is a funny thing. I was looking for my old V-Steel 3 wood and found this one in a bag of clubs I presume I picked off the scrap pile. It was beat to crap and back with a missing ferrule. But man is it a pocket rocket. About 2 weeks later I found the one I had been looking for and it is pristine and has the TM factory S shaft. Naaw I aint tried to hit it put it back up in case I crack the beat up one. And the beat up one I have not put a ferrule on either and it has the same Tour Wrap I found it with. One of those things I am not messing with it in the slightest it hits so good. I did check the loft and it is 14* instead of the advertised 15*

Yeah Fella and myself are big V-Steel fans. About 10 years ago a friend talked me into going to a TM demo day ( I do not usually participate in such foolishness) I was hitting my V-Steel 7 wood and putting out some good numbers. The young TM rep had never heard of the V-Steels but the older rep told him " you would not believe how many of those are STILL out on tour especially the senior tour" Yeah IMHO still as good as anything else.

How long ago did it come out, and what's the lofts?

According to 2nd Swing's info, 2001 was the Year of the V Steel.

They come in a 15* 3w, 18* 5w, 21* 7w.  I'm not sure if there are higher lofts than that.  There's also a 13* Tour Spoon.

I forgot, there's also a 16.5* 4w
