Name a golf mistake you've made recently (not about actual play)

Showed up for a tournament the day after having a couple too many sodas the night before. Opened my trunk, golf shoes weren't there. Bought another pair at the shop with about 4 minutes to spare before we went out to our holes.

Ping G430 Max KaiLi White 60 Stiff (9 degree)
Cobra King RAD 3 Wood Fujikura Motore X F3 Stiff (14.5 degree setting)
Mizuno CLK Hybrid (19 and 22 degree, I swap them out depending on the wind in the parking lot)

Mizuno JPX-921 Hot Metal Pro 4-5 Irons - KBS Tour Regular Flex Steel Shafts

Mizuno JPX-921 Forged 6 Iron - G Wedge - KBS Tour Regular Flex Steel Shafts
Titleist SM9 54 and 58
Scotty Cameron Phantom X6 CS (34")

Second story is not me, but a friend who always wins 1st gross in the gold flight.  He is a great player but does not want to bother playing from the blacks.  First day he fires a 77 (38-39) and will surely be leading again.  After the round he signs is card and turns it in.  Unfortunately his marker did not write 5 for making par on 18.  He wrote 39.  Buddy had signed for a 111 and turned it into the pros.  No recourse for a signed/submitted card, so they wrote 111 up on the board.  Even funnier is they wrote down 106 as his net score.

On one hand, I get it he should have checked his card and counted up the score. On the other, I get its a rule, but somewhat surprised there wasn't a gentlemens agreement among the group to let it slide. Maybe the guy who usually finishes second was looking to win any way necessary?

I always think it would be funny if they did this in other sports, like if Tom Brady would have to play the super bowl then write down his own stats and had it in, but if he got it wrong that counts against him. Could you image if the Bucs won the Super Bowl, had the celebration in the Stadium, but then it was like, no wait, Chiefs won because Brady wrote down 3 TDs instead of 4.

I don't think there is anything wrong with buying shoes online but I would never buy shoes online and then take them right to the course as soon as I got them without trying them on.  As long as the site you purchase has a return policy I don't see anything wrong with it. Other than Golf Galaxy or Dicks I don't have many options locally to buy shoes and online is always going to carry more than what is available in store.

I essentially buy the same shoes each year (addidas "spikeless") when they do the closeout of the previous year. I wear them in the house until they break-in then on the course. Works well, and I haven't paid over $60 for shoes FOREVER.

I don't spend a ton on shoes either.  I walk more often than ride and I prefer a sneaker style spikeless as I just find them overall more comfortable.  This year I went with the New Balance Breeze Spikeless ($59.99/Dick's).  My BIL got me a $50 GC to Dicks for Christmas so I only paid $10 for them.  I do have a pair of cheap Etonic soft spikes I got online from RockBottomGolf for wet conditions on hillier courses but I wear the Spikeless like 90% of the time.

Honestly, one of golfs' worst rules, if I won because of that technicality I wouldn't feel like I had actually won. Pretty sure that this happened to John Smoltz a couple months back at a charity event- he didn't sign the card because so many people were asking for autographs/pictures at the end of the round and got DQed after shooting just at/under par.

I get it from the perspective that some one would probably find a way to cheap with it some how, so it needs to stop somewhere. However, I think we can all agree writing down the nine hole score in the wrong box is a mistake.

Its like in law cases, something is non-binding if its an honest mistake (if we agree on  $100 sale price and I fat figure the offer at $100,000, its non-binding), should be the same for golf. I mean, a Masters was decided in this way, but still...

I've made this mistake a few times:  while making a tee-time I fail to ask course about green conditions.  Arrive to find punched or sanded greens!

I understand why greens need to be worked on but I'd rather not spend my money and time on a less than good putting surfaces.  I have learned to inquire as this info isn't usually given out by the course over the phone.

Traded in my G25 fairway woods. Haven't found a 3 wood that I like, yet.

I made this same mistake. Used G30 and G400 and honestly they were as good but not better. I recently got G425’s and they are a step up IMO, but considering all the cash I’ve spent my game really isn’t much better than when I used G25’s.
