No, not in the ways of cow tipping. I don't know why, but I feel like I needed to clarify that in advance for some reason.

Jokes aside, I'm taking regularly scheduled lessons over this winter for the first time since I started playing and I'm curious how you guys do your thing. I already know what I'm going to do, so I'm not asking for advice from the get off my lawn crowd. Just genuinely curious.

Happy holidays everyone.

Good way to start a nice dialog is call people who haven't even responded yet the "get off my lawn crowd"

I guess my answer would be, if i had a golf instructor constantly hanging around outside my house in my front or backyard, i would politely ask him to leave

I would politely let him know the mower was in the shed

Aren't they supposed to know about grass maintenance as well ?

If I am paying an instructor for lessons then, No. That, to me is agreeing to a price for service then paying again for said service.

If taking lessons through a service; club or facility that provides several instructors at random for a series, then Yes

I have been lucky to have relationships with instructors that is is not purely transactional. Part of this is that my coach is also a pro at the club. I tend to give him some cash at the begging of the year, I guess it could be called a tip, but I figure it is like a retainer to cover off the 1-5min lessons he gives me around the green and range outside our normal lessons.

To better answer your question, I would want to know how many lessons you take a year, if they normally run longer than you’ve booked for, and if you’re playing/practicing and he sees you, does he  come by and offer advice, check on you etc.  Rather than cash, maybe get him something they’ve mentioned they’d like or something you know they wouldn’t get for themselves.

In my country there is no mandatory tipping and I sure am glad about it! In a restaurant or in a hotel we tip if we feel we have got service better than expected (read: more than included in the normal charge or creating a very pleasant atmosphere). Christmas gifts are a different animal. We give gifts whenever we wish to thank a person for the services rendered should we think the person deserves it or we want to make that person happy.

Last two golfing coach I spoke to want $150-175/hour   If they charged much less than I would tip. But I feel that plenty $ per hour

Wow! They must be soooooo much more skillful than ours who take about 60-70 dollars per hour...

If we take that in general, would those people tip anybody? Or is it just you who only tip those who you THINK earn less per hour than you do? Just being curious as we do not have that kind of  tipping culture around here.

I was being sarcastic about golf instructors   Tipping is for service workers who earn minimal wage or close it

My surgeon is in the service industry but I not tip him , maybe gift to show my appreciation for good job

But  lot of people give a standard tip for restaurant service workers no matter how their service is.

I dont really consider golf instruction a service ,  not like  caddies or some one cleaning clubs after the round like in some resorts in other countries , they deserve a tip

Im in the service industry too, and  yes I tip as well , mostly everyone does as its part of the culture here in North America

I realize it is in your culture but let me pose a question:

Why caddies and a person cleaning your clubs deserve a tip but not your golf instructor? They all get paid for their job so what is the difference in your eyes? And they all have service as profession.

It is in the custom to give low level earning worker tips  for personal service  Which type of work is based on our culture Most people do not view golf instructors in that category    You really have to live here to find out that some  jobs are tip dependent to make ends meet
